I fully agree with sharpening the wedge. I did it to my own splitter and it made a big difference (damn iron in the wood). A word of caution though coming from a career welder. Grinding can overheat the metal and affect the temper of the steel making it brittle. And the heat will always collect at the thin point. If you see color while grinding, back off. Use water at intervals to keep it cool. You dont have to worry about the structural integrity of your wedge, but the edge may not keep. Keep on keeping on Chris. P.S. where's Bo when u need him?

I had 2 nests of yellowjackets and a whole slew of grass spiders move into the yard, this summer. Haven't seen a skeeter since. So I've left them alone. The one yeller jacket nest did get bombed with Raid a few times, after a couple tried to fight me over my breakfast, and another drowned itself in my coffee. The spiders are guarding my wood stacks for me.

Hi Chris - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. My splitter has a thin wedge and I like to keep it razor sharp - it has to assist in reducing pressure on other components. I find that using a flapper disc instead of the usual grinding disc is kinder on the metal, it provides a smoother finish and my perception is that there is reduced potential for overheating the edge.

Hi Chris. Is it the adjustment hole wearing on your wedge? If so, maybe a plastic replaceable bushing in the hole once the hole is trued up to get it back to factory tight? They do make types of plastic that would last a very long time and some plastics can even wear away metal that I've seen which blew me away when I saw it for the first time. Or maybe a second hole drilled through the wedge and whatever bracket it pins through. With two holes/pins maybe it might wear less? You know better than us by using it so much, so maybe neither are good options. Remember, KZbin is THE "Do this" "Do that", "Why aren't you doing it this way or that way" venue where watchers are much "smarter" than the people actually doing the work ( obvious non truth the majority of the time )ha, ha.
