The French were right about the climate being a big part of wine production. What they didn't account for are the wineries with that same climate. Burgundy France and Oregon USA are roughly at the same latitude, and the Willamette valley gets the same weather. That's one of the reasons that Oregon wine is becoming so well known. The Pinot Noir is especially highly recommended.

I don’t care for the licorice flavor, but I did enjoy it as a way to lower my inhibitions before an all night painting session. I get what Toulouse-Lautrec was on about. You maintain the clarity needed to paint, but loosen up a lot. Not something I’d go out of my way for though. It was about equal to me with a glass of wine or a good craft beer.

What I remember from chasing the green fairy, with a true, highly rated absinthe is……the strange sensation of being totally lucid and sober….while at the same time being drunk. I never had this effect with any other alcohol drink. Only with a high quality absinthe. Each ounce mixed with slowly dripping cold water over an ice cube to produce the lovely louche. The truth is…..real absinthe does indeed have a different effect.

If you could buy it in Germany, it was already highly regulated. I drank Absinthe in Portugal in the 80s (only the "weaker" kind with 63%😎) and I could never get the same stuff in Germany. They don't allow high Wormwood (Wermutwurzel) content, not because of some supposed hallucinogenic effect, just because it's deemed too harmful for your body.

As an absinthe lover. I think the hallucinations are due to having a tasty drink that goes down like juice that basically contains a quadruple shot of 151. Have a night of five or six of these and you will probably experience some severe side effects.

Simon, living allegedly in Czech, is in unique position to "research" the production of local distiller Mr. Žufánek from Moravia - especially his St. Antoine, L'Anciene, and Dubied are worth trying, although the prices have grown to insane values, because the guy has become a sort of local "van Vinkle" of absinthe. Otherwise, the graphic material could be better prepared - especially the artificially colored glass of something horrible could be replaced with a photo of genuine absinthe, which is never "toxic green", but more of a color of tree leaves (French even have the term "feuille morte", dead leaves, because absinthe in bottle gradually turns from green to yellow as the chlorophyl decays).

There was a family friend of ours that on occasion, decades ago, would bring absinthe from other countries back home from work trips and give us a bottle ; i have no idea how high the wormwood concentration was but after several shots, we’d all get a greenout (your vision goes green like looking through ski goggles if you’ve never had it) which is usually the first step in hallucinations, sometimes we’d get tracers during the greenout, but i never saw inanimate objects move, talk, grow or shrink like true hallucinations cause.
@corkbulb2895

Greenout! That's pretty funny! Same thing happens if you take too high of a dose of SSRIs (typical antidepressants) and I hate it! It's a terrible feeling. Happened to me on Celexa my dose was raised to 20mg, which is a typical maintenance dose. I am apparently extremely sensitive to SSRIs. They call it "seratonin syndrome". If you take enough adderall, everything becomes orange. Like you are looking through orange tinted glasses. Funny how the typical color of adderall is orange as well. Can't imagine that is related but everything gets more colorful and bright anyway.

@@corkbulb2895 ive never had Adderall or Celexa before but ive heard of Serotonin Syndrome, usually in regard to mixing substances (like Ecstasy and SSRIs) or taking too much of an antidepressant; its effects sounded creepy and awful when i was reading up on it. Everything going orange would be different; i wonder what causes these color changes in vision. Being colorblind, the color of green ive seen may not be green at all and could be yellow or off orange in reality, 🤷‍♂️. The greenout does make driving out of the question for many hours; i imagine the same is true for an orange out. I hope Celexa is helping you though and itsnt strictly vision issue and possible Serotonin . Interesting story on other substances, thanks for sharing.

@@MrSpooner1985 I haven't taken Celexa in 12 years. And no, I didn't mix it with anything it just happened. It's not just the green vision, you feel terrible. Used to make me black out too. Stuff is NASTY! I take Remeron (mirtazapine) now and I don't get any side effects whatsoever. That's because it is not an SSRI and works by binding directly to serotonin receptors

Okay! I've just done a lot of research on this and apparently, the old method of making absinthe does not contain enough oils to cause any effect. Most likely, these old drinks from the 1800s didn't actually cause the things it did. More likely, it was an easy explanation for the lead an arsenic poisoning everybody seemed to have, plus God knows what else these people were ingesting. A lot of food and drink manufacturing used harmful chemicals that were not know yet to be harmful. Also, pretty much every drug was legal back then. Modern absinthe contains distilled wormwood oil and the plants are genetically selected to produce WAY more oils, just like modern weed is. However, from what I read, absinthe doesn't actually do anything and actual blind medical studies reported no change in the effects reported by subjects who were given plain alcohol and alcohol with wormwood oil.

I have had it, while in Japan. It was good. Only differences I noticed was it kicked in a lot quicker and stronger. Also, it’s the only drink I have ever scene that dyed the ice in the drink green. Not sure how, but I wasn’t about to waste money, so I ate the ice too. The ice not only was the same green as the drink but tasted like Absinthe too. It actually tasted like a much more concentrated version of the drink. By the way, the ice was clear and normal when they made my drink; I watched them make it.

@@mannacler I don’t know what the name was. I had two drinks served different ways. One was the cloudy version that didn’t kick very hard, and I told the bar tender that it was nice but didn’t seem strong enough. The second one was straight Absinthe on ice in a Martini 🍸 glass. I probably chatted over about 15-30 minutes and by that time when I finished my drink the ice had turned a cloudy green and was quite strong once I ate the ice. The drink itself was clear green the entire time, which made it even more surprising to see the ice had turned that cloudy green. Back then, Japan was one of the few places in the world where I could try the genuine version rather than the less effective versions available in the United States where I live. I am not sure how it is these days but I hope to go back again one day and try some more of the genuine type of Absinthe. The bar was in Shinjuku near the Singing Man statue of memory serves.

@@farmer-jon It was probably a fake "crapsinth" similar to the Czech crappy imitations from the 90s - terrible wormwood vodka colored by artificial colors. True absinthe takes it color from chlorophyl from the botanicals which will never color ice - in fact, after louching, the drink often turns milky white, and the green color disappears. In other words, you were scammed by a Japanese tourist trap.

I've had a bit of experience with the green fairy I've also had some experience with various hallucinogens and I can quite categorically state that Absinthe does not make you hallucinate, also many of the more common brands of Absinthe are pure trash (especially the Czech stuff) it's basically just industrial strength alcohol mixed with green food colouring. The best Absinthes are the distilled ones that come from France and Switzerland but they will cost you a pretty penny. Having said that the effect of Absinthe is quite distinct from other forms of alcohol and if you can get your hands on some good quality stuff it's worth experiencing, just don't drink it neat, dilute it with iced water to a ratio of around four or five to one and don't spoil it by adding sugar.

On the shaking bit... cans vs bottles. Wouldn't the bottle just produce more foam because it has a smaller exposed surface area at the top of the bottlle vs a can? Like you said earlier in the video, the bubbles being at the top of the vessel on the surface means oess liquid is foamed. I feel like a bottle has something like a third of the surface area vs a can.... but then you went on about glass bottles and i was zoned out for a moment... so i may have just missed the explanation.

As far as Bloody Marys are concerned I absolutely hate tomato juice but the best Bloody Mary I have ever had was at a place called The Firehouse Grill in Auburn Maine. My friends and I refer to it as Mana juice whatever you did the night before it will invigorate you and fix it

i was telling my family how i don't get affected by any alcohol now so my nephew got a shot of absinthe and asked me to try it. I knocked it back and he sat there waiting for a reaction that never arrived

Yeah I'll join you in that boat. Had a "kava" party once. Everyone seemed high out of there minds and even though I took twice as much as everybody else, absolutely NOTHING happened. Might as well have been vitamins to me. Or sugar pills. Different people react completely differently to things

I've had original absithine made from original Czech Rep recipe. Best way I can describe it is a clear headed drunk and smoking some of the best weed at the same time.
@Kamamura2

There are no "original Czech recipes", that's all a scam invented by the unscrupulous peddlers in the 90s. There's no proof that absinthe was even drunk much in Czech - Hašek certainly does not mention it in Good Soldier Svejk, and he names all kinds of alcohol in that book. The Czech addition to absinthe was to fake it by cheap, bitter wormwood vodka colored with artificial dyes and earn money from the "hallucinations" malarkey. There are many shops in the center of Prague that sell absolutely awful "crapsinth". There are two where absinthe started - Switzerland and France.

The dude who originally patented it actually stole it from women who made it for years as a medicinal tonic. I don't know that there's a ton of info on it, but I went to a lecture once with someone whose family got screwed over by the guy. Basically the guy stole their family receipe, but it was the kind of thing multiple people were making before him.

Where Simon lives Absinthe may have 35mg Thujon per kg instead of the 10mg/kg in most of the rest of Europe and they sell it at every liquor store. I even found 1 with 100mg/kg. Still not enough to hallucinate but, it does always give you a nice but different buzz.

no, absinthe is just really strong. wormwood isn’t really psychoactive, and it’s only “active” chemical in it, Thujone, just has the ability to cause convulsions (fun!). you know what else has wormwood in it, to the point that it’s the main flavoring? Malort- the most disgusting drink ever, courtesy of chicago. is that hallucinogenic? nope. so why would the wormwood in absinthe be? absinthe is just traditionally very strong, and anyone drinking it straight (like a dope) would be hammered beyond belief. doesn’t matter what booze you drink, drink enough and you’ll be seeing pink elephants. absinthe just tastes nice, especially with some sparkling white wine (a la a Death in the Afternoon, tho not made as strong as Hemingway originally made it 😅) so no, if you drank absinthe and thought it felt different… that’s just the placebo effect messing with you. it’s just a strong herbal spirit. it’s not acid in a cocktail. edit: and you covered these points, so good on you Simon. no guillotine for you in the near future! 😉 edit 2: yeah… wine snobbery is like 99% absolute bullsh!t 😂

DMT does not make you hallucinate. The reason we know this is because in controlled studies, virtually everyone has the exact same experience when it fully plays out. And that cannot be a hallucination. There's no such thing as a mass hallucination

Your assumption that the container types do not have different levels of carbonation is not what I heard. I actually heard the glass bottles have HIGHER levels of carbonation added because the glass bottles can hold higher pressure.
