Good comparison. New sub. Different manufacturers rate wattage differently making it difficult to compare. If the rating is based on “clean” power without distortion, a tube amp will tend to sound louder because of how tubes work vs solid state circuits. With solid state amps, the OD tends to come from clipping diodes, much like using an OD pedal. The power section of most SS amps are designed to be clean, simply amplifying the preamp and any OD added there. When a tube amp is pushed beyond the limits of its headroom, the power section can start to distort the signal, and usually in a pleasant way IMO. So a tube amp rated at max clean volume, might put out more volume with more distortion. When a SS power section is overloaded it clips in a much less “musical” way. Again, IMO. There are all sorts of variations though. Some tube amps have clipping diodes in the preamp section for higher gain sounds and such.

What amazes me is that the Randall 120 head going thru a 4x12 cabinet only reaches 118 decibels while chucks guitar geekery took an 80 watt teal stripe Peavey Bandit 112 combo amp outside with a decibel meter and hit 124 decibelsnever mind wattage in this case how the hell is a 112 louder than a 4x12 is my question plus that was outside so i would assume the bandit wouldve scored louder in a room

It could also depend on the distance of the decibel meter. That is interesting however. I've personally noticed that some amps are MUCH louder than their wattages suggest. One good example is the Mesa Rectoverb 25W head I used to have. It was INSANELY loud for 25W, and a lot of KZbin reviewers have said the same thing

@@mobbinator well he does move it throughout the video away at one or 3 meters it was 124 db then he moved it back and said with each time you double the distance the decibels drop 6 db,im just shocked that a 112 combo could register anywhere near a 4x12 or a 2x12 mesa cab like you have,a very nice cab you have there

I've read that 3 db is twice as loud. And in yt comments, someone said that was wrong, 3 db sounds 2x as loud to human ears, but it actually requires 6 db to be twice as loud. 117=2x 111=2x 105=2x as loud as 99. Or 117=2x 115=2x 111=2x109=2x106=2x103=2x100=2x96. Either way, 117=MFKNLOUD

I had a 50w JCM900 2500 Hi Gain Master Volume into a 1960A 4x12 Marshall cab. At 3/4 it was unbearable. WAAAAAYYYY too loud for everyday playing. Ear plug level. 6-10 was no difference. At 6 it was wide open throttle. Insane volume. I can't even imagine a 100w head being double the louder.

A 100 watt amp won’t be twice as loud. It takes double the watts to gain just few dB of volume gain.

100W expands how much clean headroom you will have until the amp starts to distort unpleasantly
