Hi Lucas, you'll have to add some distance, like 40 to 60 yards, to see and read what the KE is doing at real-world hunting distances. Another video, I guess?

it is not just a black and white heavy vs light to get a conclusion. This is just one part of it. Lots of factors to come up with a "perfect" arrow for you and the game your after(assuming we are relating this to a hunting scenario). You are correct- any bow is a kenetic energy machine per it's cam design, DL,DW and BH, so in a proportional test like your- the difference is minimal as the machine(the bow) did not change.

What specifically are you looking for %change of momentum between arrow masses? This is covered in video 2 when I discuss drags reduction of energy downrange. The Momentum is also listed although not discussed, however momentum retention is proportional to the velocity retention. So if more energy is retained more momentum is also retained.

However, I will be making a video going into more depth of drag and a method of estimating you downrange energy and momentum based on arrow mass and your bows initial energy which can be determined by a chronograph.

I think to really understand why mass matters you would need to express the efficiency of energy transfer from the bow to the arrow at a given span of weights( 350, 450, 550, 600, 650 for example). Then you could use that data set to plot the curve. Most of the time I've seen it expressed in momentum, but it could be interesting to see how much energy is lost in the transmission from the bow to the arrow.

I do plan to do this in a future video with a bunch of bows to get a general idea of how bo efficiency changes with mass. I plan to graph each bows draw cycle to determine the potential and then measure the actual energy of the arrow to determine an efficiency of each platform. All potential energy not transferred to the arrow is transfer into the bow via vibration or noise. However what I was trying to illustrate with this video is that modern bows are very consistent with energy transfer regardless of arrow weight. So initial energy should be nearly constant especially for a well tuned bow, however this doesn't mean all bows act this way. Thanks for watching.

@@Lucas_Palmer_Archery thanks for putting these videos out. The information is really interesting and well thought out. It seems like it could be interesting to see how consistent the energy transmission actually is even in just one bow from the various weights. I'm guessing if you took all of the dampeners off and measured vibration it would provide some valuable insight.

You should really get yourself a Mathews bow it’s more efficient when going up in arrow weight. Meaning you won’t see the drop in speed like other bows. Just a friendly suggestion 😁👍🤔 You have definitely earned another sub ‼️👍🤩☝️ Looking forward to more great content 🎯🏹😁😎

Since during a shot the Energy stored in the spring (bow) gits transferred to the arrow, it makes since that the arrow mass does not matter. No matter what you shoot the bow energy goes into the arrow (ignoring slight difference in efficiency). KE at the bow is the same, however, the KE downrange will be less for the faster/lighter arrow. The work done on the faster flying arrow (Force X Distance) is greater since it is moving faster and air resistance force depends on velocity squared. So double the speed and you 4 times the air resistance. Distance will be the same for heavy and light arrows. Change in momentum down range is trickier since momentum depends on Force and Time. Momentum = Force x Time And both these variable are changing since the heavy arrow moves slower (less air resistance force), and it takes more time. Heavy arrow has less force (air resistance) but more flight time. Although, however, velocity is squared and time is not. The arrow that moves the slowest has the least amount of lost momentum. In gun talk we would say the heavy arrow has a higher ballistic coefficient, and is less effected by air resistance.

Absolutely anyone using a compound, with longer draw weights shouldn’t worry about mass and velocity shorter draw length and weights should maybe consider more especially if they intend to shoot longer distances. More videos to come thanks for watching.

The next video will be all about penetration working on it now. Bullets behave quite differently than arrows the biggest is they expand during penetration to create a large cavity, that’s why some exit wounds are baseballs. Where arrows cut creating a small channel to pass through. Cutting a small channel takes much less energy. Thanks for the comment! Take care

Absolutely although I expected the heavy arrow to make the bow slightly more efficient, however it seems that newer bows don’t experience that like older bows. This video is more to illustrate that Kinetic energy has nothing to do with arrows velocity I.e faster arrow has more KE. That’s only half the equation, the bow shooting the arrow is really the only factor.
