Does BLACK MAGIC CRAFT BASECOAT Do ANYTHING?!?!? (Crafting Supply Test)

The mix doesn’t do much for compressive strength and the benefits are negligible on monolithic chunky items (my original tile set I still use doesn’t have a Mod Podge coat and I rarely use it any more on solid stuff). It’s really more for brittleness and tearing of delicate layered pieces. Make some roof sections with foam, cardstock, and paper shingles and run the tests again. The results will be more drastic.

Works for me! Jeremy is the gold standard for me based on time and experience. I wonder if applying the final finish matte varnish spray would make a difference in the tests. Paint chipping for sure. Thanks for the due diligence in validation testing!

How about the use of some different rattle cans over the 3 finishes. I always thought one of the benefits of the BMC base coat was to shield the foam from spray paint.

Didn't realize it was a 50-50 mix. I was under the impression that it's more like a 1 oz to 10 oz mix, roughly...

He made a new video where he explains it. Also these tests dont involve the more paint or final varnish. But as far as the black magic coat goes, he explains that the more black acrylic paint you add the more diluted the mod podge begins to get, thus less durability. But yeah. Definately should do a test where you do the black magic coat plus like the light grey paint and such

I don't think the BBC needs to be 50/50 mix. I usually just use an entire bottle of the .50 black Wal-Mart paint in my 16oz bottle of MP. Then I use one of the mixing wands people uses to blend coffee to mix it up. The black is mostly to see what you painted since NO is clear, and help with shadows. But in theory, if you are doing icy terrain or the big 12x12 tiles Jeremy made fire FrostGrave, you could go with a blue MP mix instead of black. that's what I'm going to do when I start making my FrostGrave terrain.

Hey, I like the informative video. Thanks for the effort & dance montage.. haha. I got one for you. I took packing foam strips and made roads. I rolled it with my homemade PVC cobblestone roller, BMC overcoat, painted it in standard wall methods, with odd colors added into grays. What was surprising was that the poor texture of the foam made it look like a weathered road, pitted as if rain and travel had worn it when I applied the wash.

I think you need to try the tests on more complicated builds than flat tiles to see the effects.

Also another interesting test for the mod podge vs BMC could be detailing. So like when you do say wood grain. I feel like if you textured your foam putting a layer of straight mod podge on first would fill in some of your details. So maybe showing what that looks like vs BMC?

very good video! I´m very new to the tabletopbuildingadventure, but I´d love to see a test like that, considerung the usage after a year or so, I mean taking tiles 1000 times into the hand, sliding them a 1000 times across the table, putting them in and getting them out of a box for a storage for 1000 times...I think that especially THEN the BMC base coat plays out its real strength, but I have to admit that this would be a annoyingly time consuming test XD...nonetheless, keep up your excellent work!!

Maybe test modge podge vs pva on fragile details like wood grain. Do you need to coat stuff casted with plaster? Aaaand The music is too loud

Ooh yeah, I could test if there’s a difference there! I mean, I usually do, I coat everything in Black Magic Craft base coat. Do you HAVE to? Well that I’m not really sure, especially with plaster and stuff. But I do know it makes layering your finished paints easier. At least, that’s my opinion. Oh damn, sorry! I thought I had that sorted out!

If I use a coating I only put enough paint to tint the mod podge so I can see the coverage. Yes I have to paint them with straight black again, but I'm okay with that as I do several projects at a once and I have time.

I’m wondering how it would square up on pre-textured foam. I imagine squishing in texture hardens it a but on its own. Also, importantly, it would be cool to see painted tiles, not just the base layer of paint, but the color and dry brush and wash with these tests

I love your content, but WHY didn't you use pink XPS so we could see the damage and wear? The drop test seems pretty arbitrary since the model had a variety of sharp and smooth surfaces. Not sure this video really allows us to judge for ourselves what kind of results you got. Good idea, but can't say it really cleared things up much.

Well I didn’t use pink because, honestly, I own a BUNCH of green foam so that’s just what I had laying around. Pink would probably be more visible on camera though… Yeah that didn’t really occur to me about the mini until after. My thought process was more along the lines of “what’s likely to get dropped on your pieces” vs following the scientific method. I think I’ll have to revisit this at some point with some changes to the test subjects and Methods… maybe a metal D20 would provide more consistent results. Thanks for your input!

Now, to be scientific, you need to do this 29 more times to get a viable sample size. Otherwise, you've simply made a helpful video that informs people of how to better protect their projects so that they'll have more success in this hobby....which is cool I guess
