Tyson wasn't known for defense and wasn't in shape for that fight. Floyd is respected as the greatest defensive fighter in the history of the sport and his conditioning is always ridiculously good. Even when he takes breaks for a few years he always come back in the best shape.

@I'm smarter than 100% of people on this website He wasn't really known for defense, he definitely had highlights though. He was known for his approach where he kept his head down and bobbed with the peak a boo technique he made famous which made it hard for people to counter and hit him when he came in but I wouldn't say it was a defensive style, in his prime he didn't even need to fight defensively honestly, he would knock so many people out in the first round that it wasn't even a factor lol. When his offensive skills started to fade he was knocked out several times unfortunately. He defense wasn't bad it was really good but it can't be compared to Floyd's who is barely touched in most fights.

Kellerman's example of water polo vs freestyle swimming is a bad example for this contest. Those are completely different sports with completely different objectives. It's like saying soccer and rugby are the same because they are both played on grass. A better example is this - Take the sport of basketball. There are many skills required- shooting from different ranges, passing, running up the court, defending... Lets' say you have a well rounded player like DeMarcus Cousins who can shoot, handle the ball and protect the rim and a very good defensive player like Tristan Thompson who is very good at rebounding. And let's say for some reason they are in a rebounding competition where the only focus is on who gets more rebounds in a game. Thompson would probably win because he is better at that skill. But if Cousins stopped practising his shot, passing, dribbling... and focused only on rebounding then he would have a fair shot. Boxing is one of many skills that MMA fighters have. McGregor cannot be counted out just because he has to focus on kickboxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu... as well. If he focuses only on this one aspect of fighting, he would have a fair shot. Not saying that he would win but boxing and MMA are not completely different sports and they both have the same objective.

The other thing to remember is it's a LOT easier for an MMA fighter to not use his legs, elbows, chokeholds and fight in a boxing match than it is for a boxer to learn how to do those things and fight in the octagon.
