look man, the moon determines our tides. so thats important. but then also, anything that ripped the moon up that bad would probably change the moons orbit drastically AND even if it didnt just knock the moon right out of orbit, the change in mass would do so ANY WAY. best case? the moon flies off into space and we all learn to adapt too a would FILLED with now stagnant water. more likely? all those moon bits hit earth and pepper us like chocolate chips on a cookie before the other HALF OF THE MOON crashes down on us and we go the way of the dino! (yes i know that is an outdated extinction theory but its still a plausible apocalypse.)

If you consider eventual Apollo debris as a moon the ISS and all other satelites are moons too right? We have thousands!! @Scarage2110 жыл бұрын
Something in orbit around a planet (or I any celestial body) is called a satellite. If that satellite is not man-made it can be called a moon. The reason why humans call earths moon 'the moon' is because it's the only natural satellite visible from earth. People, even scientists, are often very straight forward in naming things which often left us with names which don't make any sense anymore. Like e.g. reduction and oxidation in chemistry.

@1:43 you say "at a gravitationally stable spot." Actually only L4 and L5 are stable. L1, L2 and L3 are not stable. For L1 to L3 it's like putting a ball on the top of a smooth hill: it may stay there for a few minutes or hours or weeks, but unless you put it there very carefully it will eventually roll far away. Whereas L4 and L5 are like putting a ball at the bottom of a gulley: if they roll a little they will roll back.

Okay serious question. We all know that Pluto was demoted to dwarf planetary status due to not fulfilling the third criteria of a planet. It hasn't "cleared its orbit" so to speak. That said we have a examples of objects that quite clearly are in Earth's orbit and don't orbit Earth itself in this very video. Take the object 2010 TK7. Based on the explanation given in the video, it has a stable orbit at Earth's L4 Lagrangian point. Wouldn't that mean the Earth has not cleared its orbit, and therefore isn't a planet? Wasn't Jupiter mentioned to have such "trojan objects" as well? Meaning it shouldn't be considered a planet either?

Hey DNews, I've got a question. Have you ever looked up at the sky during a clear day and saw a huge celestial object the size of the moon in the sky? Well I have at a couple of times. So please explain, if the side of the earth facing the sun is getting to see a moon then how come the side not facing the sun also can see the moon. We are not even talking about atmospheric refraction here cause that would mean that the place diametrically opposite to us on earth which is probably having a night phase then, wont have a moon (just because you cannot refract light that much). Thanks in advance, wish to hear from you soon.

i think there is a second moon around the earth. im not sure, but shadow effect on the moon is not satefactory since the shadow can increse and decrease in size without the distance between the earth and the moon changed. the other thing is that the shaow does not bend or deform, therby i think the shado is not a shadow but a second moon. as i have watched the moon myself, i could not make out the typrical moon pattern trough the shadow cast on the moon as it looked different. the shadow looked as if it was a dark moon but with different pattern on it as the moon we used to as well as being 20 percent smaller than the moon. it does not make any sense that a shaow effect can change its size since between enormous to tiny without the moon getting bigger or smaller, so this object is what causes the moon eclipse but is itself a dark moon. its possible its also responsible for the sun eclispe as being very close to earth, because then it will turn compleatly black, .

Yes this can happen, although it is very very very unlikely, if it was just the star and the two planet with no other objects what so ever. It is theoretically possible for this to happen. Or if what your talking about is a binary planetary system (Which we almost have with our moon) two planets can orbit round each other while orbiting a star and can even have a moon that will orbit around a planetary berry center.
