We've recently bought an 18 month old 1095 - didn't have opportunity to check much out bringing the boat round from where we bought her and now we've just been blessed with another lockdown! Interesting watching your revs and trim + Zipwake and finding that not much makes a difference to speed - I always thought trimming out, to a point, would put the speed up slightly but didn't look like it. We keep the boat at Port St.Cyprien (France) - check on Google Maps and zoom in - we're at the bottom of the marina, the quiet end, and it's beautiful !! Port St. Cyp also has a website - it's a lovely part of the world. We've changed from Beneteau Swift Trawler 34 with single Cummins 425. Bit of a difference! ... Keep up the good work !!

@PowerboatingAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Wow that is quite a change - I expect you'll love the extra speed now and again!! ;) Yes I thought there would be more of a difference too but it was only a 4000 to 4100 revs at one point, otherwise very little difference. Did a bit of motorbike touring down there years ago, didn't go as far down as your spot but up onto the Pyrenees, perfect biking country!! When I win the lottery I'll have a boat in the Med :)

@@PowerboatingAdventures ... Let me know and I'll get a case of wine in! The Cote Vermeille between where we are and Rosas in Spain is lovely with many little bays, creeks and coves to anchor in and enjoy. Our favourite place is Collioure which has a dozen odd moorings and is only 15 minutes away at 20 knots in the trawler - rather less in this one! We've been here for 6 years living right on the end of the Pyrenees - we brought a Monterey 30ft down when we moved and have since owned a Beneteau 38GT, Beneteau 8.8 Sundeck and the trawler - I think the Merry Fisher is a keeper!

Hi Bob and Nicky, we saw you on the Marina about 3 weeks ago when buying our new boat and were taking it for a sea trial. It was moored next-but one from you. Love your videos especially as we have moved to a larger boat and are starting to get up the courage to venture further out of the haven and do some exploring. Would love to see a video about anchoring.

Looking forward to your next Video. Let us all hope the weather warms up at last. Thinking about buying a Merry Fisher 895 Offshore. May I ask you two if you were still in the process of buying your boat. What additions or changes would you make to your specifications? One thing my partner has asked. We know you like to use the sunbed in stern cockpit. However the overhead awning is a permanent feature, so don’t you often find it is in the shade? You do always have the seat on the bow in full sun. But that could be a windy place at anchor. Best regards

Hi John, That is exciting news!! Having thought about it between us, we are very happy with the choices we made initially and, the fact that Daniel at BHG threw in the SUP rack on the roof FOC, gave us a really good place to put our 3D dinghy to dry out before deflating/folding it back up when we get back to the berth. (We haven’t got a SUP yet!!) We rejected the microwave option as that was only a shore power facility (or an on board generator) and we didn’t see the need for that with a twin gas hob already there :) Yes the canopy roof is permanently fixed on ours but it is of course detachable which might be an option for the good Summer months I guess. If you’re sat at the edges of the boat at the stern you are generally in the sun (if you want to be) but we also like that ability to get some shade too if desired whilst remaining in the stern area. The bow area is EITHER the raised bench seat OR you can leave the seat down and fit the full sun pad which is nice too albeit only for low speeds perhaps or at anchor/mooring buoy. I think there’s enough options there for everyone to be happy!!😁😁 (New film on anchoring coming out in the next day or two, and more planned of course 😁)

Great Video very interesting and well worth the experiment. All the tweaking seemed to make very little difference. I can only think that the 895 is an inherently stable boat and her natural trim on the plane is near perfect. Hence she stays in the slot regardless of tweaking the engine trim. After a six week delay, my new zipwakes from Sweden have finally arrived! Hope to get them fitted ASAP as boat engines serviced, boat anti fouled and hull polished ready to relaunch. I will let you know if the zipwakes cure my excessive stern trim. Looking forward to more videos of you leaving and arriving on the berth. The Yamaha drive by wire throttles are so very sensitive! I note that they have just upgraded them to a positive stepped click type. Also looking forward to a full video of you inflating and launching the dinghy and using the electric outboard. You seem to have an excellent fit of boat equipment. I envy your Webasto heating system this cold spring! Keep up the good work both of you.

In addition I read the other comments, and it seems that more effect of engine trim was expected. Have you tried it with Zipwake OFF? On the video, a little part of the water can be seen and the pitch seems to remain steady. Could it be possible by keeping the pitch angle steady, it reduced the performance?
@PowerboatingAdventures

Many thanks for your comments YB. Yes there were some small variations in performance, less than I thought there would be. We haven’t tried that Zipwakes off one - might be worth a check next time we’re out. Thanks again for your observations 😁😁

Curious to know if faster would’ve been any different as I tend to find engine trim makes very little difference under 25 knots (ours is 29’ with twin step hull and Mercury 300).

@@PowerboatingAdventures I’ve written to ZipWake (and their UK distributor) asking how their system is intended to work with outboard/outdrive trim, but no reply 🙁 Once you’re on the plane (on decent water), the idea of ‘leg’ trim is to lift the bow a little and, pretty much, be riding on the rear 1/2-1/3 of the hull with the propeller horizontal. The engine note gets smoother and the speed increases with no additional throttle (or maintain same speed using less fuel 👍). But, from what I’ve read and seen on KZbin, it would seem that if you then switched the ZipWakes to auto, they would try to ‘correct’ the pitch and bring the bow down. This, in turn, would mean the prop would be tilted upwards 🤦‍♂️ 🤔🤔🤔 PS We’re in Poole Harbour, our boat is berthed at Cobb’s Quay Marina.

@garryrobson yes I agrée Garry (the sweet spot!!) and potentially begin to work against each other!! And I guess every boat would be slightly different re weight and weight distribution etc so some fine tuning as always! The cabling system to join peripherals was often referred to as NMEA 2000 cabling which was what all our peripherals were connected back to the Garmin with - I think that’s what you were referring to Garry - connection method? If I’ve got that right then a NMEA 2000 on Garmin or Google might help?

Another great technical video - thanks. On an entirely separate point is your slip 8 or 9 mtrs? as I notice you bring her stern in, to perhaps stop the bow hanging over the pontoon. But does it not worry you if the spring line gives during bad weather and the outboards slam into the dock?
@PowerboatingAdventures
@PowerboatingAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Many thanks StarPort Boating, much appreciated. The Pontoon is just under 9m but it’s not stern in because of overhang. The entry gate at the rear, and the side gate of the 895, are towards, or at, stern starboard and that’s the easier boarding point and exit point for the boat. We did the same with the 795 for the same reasons. Your point about movement back to the pontoon is one I guess we all deliberate about!! We have in effect 3 springers preventing that movement, end of pontoon to mid cleat, end of pontoon to rear starboard cleat and the short line on start of pontoon to rear SB cleat - not just one (!!), plus we’ve put the pontoon bumper/fenders on which are over 1m so cover the width of the raised props of all the first 3 fail!! Fingers crossed they’d never be needed!! I do keep a check on the 3 springers for any wear as they are important!! :)

I am just about to have my new 895 offshore delivered. Was just wondering if there is any special cables needed to get zip wake information on my chart plotter screen as you have it.
@PowerboatingAdventures
@PowerboatingAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
That's exciting Matthew and enjoyyyyyy!! Yes it would be an NMEA 2000 type cable link which is an industry standard way of linking devices. So we have an NMEA bridge at the rear of the plotter which is in effect a junction box into which external components are wired with NMEA 2000 cables from each unit. The bridge itself then connects into the chart plotter. We have the radio, zipwakes, Yamaha 6YC and Garmin VHF radio connected through the bridge. If you have a Garmin Plotter then this is their NMEA 2000 page buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/cNMEA2000-p1.html Hope that helps :)

@PowerboatingAdventures
@PowerboatingAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, Glad you’re enjoying our films and many thanks for your feedback 😁👍 We haven’t considered solar panels as we have the shore power link when berthed and the engines keep the batteries charged enough when running to last overnight if we are staying away with no shore power. I’ve seen some Jeanneaus with solar panels so it is possible and would probably remove the need for a shore link. Yes give it a go!! You’re in an amazing part of the world for boating. Get some training in the essentials if you do - it was very useful for us and good fun too! 😁

Both boats are great fun 😁 we did RYA Qualifications - the Powerboat 2 course, Essential Seamanship and Navigation course and an OFCOM VHF radio course. They were the first courses we had done as new coastal boaters (almost new - had a cabin cruiser years ago on the canal). We are similar age and thoroughly enjoyed those courses. The first two were superb for boating skills. First was lots of on the water stuff and the second was online with an excellent learning pack sent and you did it in your own time to no time limits. I think you can access RYA training where you are so go for it - it’s excellent for confidence when your boat arrives too!! (not if, when 😁😁) We only live once 🎉

Hello, in your experience, can you give me advice on whether it would be justified to invest in the installation of the Automatic Trim Tabs Zipwake system on my new Merry Fisher 795 s2, is there really a lot of good things to be gained with the installation of this system?
@PowerboatingAdventures
@PowerboatingAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan and thanks for your note. We had the Lenco trim tabs on our MF795 and now prefer the Zipwakes. With the Lencos you could adjust manually to get improvements but that would be difficult, if turning for example, to do both. The Zipwakes do it all automatically - from planing, to turning to port or starboard at speed, acceleration, deceleration keeping the boat stable and in the optimal position/angle. If you have the extra cash to opt for the Zipwakes my personal view is that it is money well spent. 😁

@PowerboatingAdventures
@PowerboatingAdventures Жыл бұрын
Hi Rado and thanks for watching - we had the Lenco tabs on the 795 and the Zipwakes on the 895 and I'd go with the Zipwakes, personally, as they make all the adjustments for you whilst you are on the move. So if for example you wanted to do a fast turn 180 degress then the zipwakes manage all the optimum stabiity whilst doing that turn so you can concentrate on steering and observation rather than steering/observation and Lenco tab adjustment - there are more advantages but that's one example. You can, of course, make manual adjustments as well on the Zipwakes but fully auto was our preferred setting. The fact that they retract into their housing also means they stay free of sea life like barnacles etc so remain efficient. Lenco's gather barnacles and other sea creatures over time and so are less efficient when clogged. Great bit of kit the Zipwakes! :)
