very fun seeing you shoot LF! a little tip when it comes to the Lupe, i noticed at 8:07 is the same as I have, the tip is to take electrical tape and wrap it around the clear part! makes it easier to focus due to the fact that when its wrapped all the light is from the ground glass, making it look brighter, its like making a dark cloth for the Lupe

Hello Roger from a born on the Isle of Wight guy - I've found the Stearmman Press 10x8 multi format tank (does four 4x5 negs, two 5x7 and one 10x8) is way less fiddly to use than the 445 tank, and I find I don't damage negs as easily loading it and unloading it. I also never use a blower to clean film holders - an anti static brush works way better.

just a thought- i make it a habit to set the aperture and shutter speed after focusing and composition is set and then cock the shutter and test fire once looking at the front of the lens before pulling the dark slide (some do it before inserting the film holder) and then cock the shutter for the real exposure. that way you cannot forget to close the preview. on some of my oldest lenses without the preview slider I have to use the time exposure setting to focus, so the shutter test really helps prevent accidental waste of film with that set up

I’m pleased to see you went straight for the sp445 tank. I got there third time after trying a Jobo 4509 tank and a Mod54 insert for a Patterson tank. The jobo was difficult to load and the Mod54 (admittedly a “seconds” example) scratched the negs. The Sp445 is the easiest method I’ve tried

Hello Roger, welcome to large format. I laughed heartily again. If you look back at your own beginnings, your video looks very familiar. I use a Graflex, which is a bit easier to use. When loading the negatives it is important that the notches are on the right side. Depending on the manufacturer, it only has one notch or several like your negative. Have fun taking photos in 4x5 inch. There are also negative holders for the Stearman tank where there is only one central bridge. I cut out the other ones from mine so that only the middle one is still in there, but you have to know for yourself. Cheers Rolf

In school we were told to hold the film in your right hand and if you feel the notches on your right index finger the emulsion will be the right way up when you slide the film into the holder. The notches should be on the right side of the film holder at the hinge. Super fast way to load film almost foolproof. Hope this helps.

good video, a couple of tips, with the cloth outside, put the chord UNDER the camera's bottom frame of the ground-glass, this will hold the "elastic" part of the cloth from coming loose and flaffing around. another tip, FILM HOLDER: put the slide in the right side out (IN THE LIGHT), then in darkness, the notch code goes Right side up, ie: top right corner, and when loading, slide in PARTIALLY, this lets you know quick if the film has resided in the darkslides' slot!!; then put thumb and first finger on the entrance of the slots, so you feel the film go in the right slot, push it all the way home, with a fingernail, raise the film to see it is indeed in the slot, close the flap, and finally lock the slide shut. ONE important tip, keep the slide colour consistent, un-exposed/exposed, and LABEL all the holders and take notes, so you KNOW for certain the type of film inside, and the development it needs, esp. if it is going to another lab for processing. finally take it SLOW, the more you rush it, the greater chance of missing an important step, and risking wrecking the film.

Hey welcome to the club. Nice first time effort. Bit like mine 3 years ago 😂. Three years on its second nature. About loupes, don't go above a 6x loupe as you'll be focusing on the ground glass grain. Buy a glass loupe, plastic will distort the image. Make sure any future lenses you buy have a large enough image circle for your intended movements. A rule of thumb when focusing..... focus on the near tilt (downward movement) to the far, do this about 3 times and you'll get acceptable focus from near to far. Also I recommend you read THIS article... FOCUS SCALES FOR LARGE FORMAT CAMERAS BY ALEX BURKE. Looking forward to your next episode of LF. Also, the SP dev tank is the best on the market, you have to make sure you put the light baffles in...in the right order. One last thing... I use the Inverso App for long exposure, receprocity and bellows extension. Good app.

I time with my phone screen on dim red light. I have 4trays arranged around the sink, dev, stop, fix, wash. Very even development and only scratches were when I did two negs at a time so no longer. You asked for thoughts on large format. Well, here are mine… I like to insert the film in the holder so that the notches can be felt at the flap. This way, if I need to check something, there is less effort involved in getting to the notches. After going out only to discover I did not have the proper lens board adaptor (twice) I’ve written up a check list of all the items I need with me to make a shot. And I’ve still forgotten my dark cloth. Especially with cameras like the Intrepid, it can be a good idea to press on the film holder a bit to ensure it is fully seated in the back of the camera. This can help reduce light leaks. It may seem like overkill, but I keep two small but high quality levels, one set for checking horizontal level and another for checking vertical that I can quickly use to get the camera adjusted properly. (I do a lot of architectural where vertical level is pretty critical.) No combination of camera and lens will ever give you enough front rise. A 210mm Super Angulon on a 4x5 with its 500mm image circle will still not be enough for some subjects. Red or Orange cable releases are easier to find when they fall out of your camera bag. Older film holders can have minor light leaks where it is easier to just keep them in a dark bag than it is to fix them. This is more of a problem on my 8x10 and 11x14 holders but if I keep them in a dark place, what little time they spend in the sunlight isn’t enough to fog the film (unless it’s an important shot). The speed that clouds move is directly proportional to the size of your film and the difficulty in setting up the camera. It is shocking how fast a cloud moves when working in 11x14. UNLESS… you are waiting for the cloud to move out of the way to give you the light you want. Then it can take hours. With the Stearman Press tank, I have gotten development artifacts where I can see a faint image of the film holder when I have agitated it by turning it over along the narrow side. But if I turn the tank over, tumbling the broad side (like a paddle) I have not. I’m not sure if this was an anomaly, but it might be worth paying attention to. At any rate, have fun with the 4x5. Shooting in large format is a really rewarding process.

Nice. I got into large format in the spring myself, got an old Graflex speed graphic and a Fujinon 180mm lens for it. At first I developed my sheets using a 3D-printed insert in my AP tank but then I got the SP 445 and it's much better. Haven't accidentally exposed any film yet but got some scratches and fingerprints on some of my negatives from careless handling and at first I got some underexposed ones as I'm using Fomapan 400 and it needs to be exposed considerably more than the box speed to get good results. One nice thing about 4x5 is the dust particles are much less noticeable on a large negative than, say, 35mm. It's a good practice to "test fire" the shutter before pulling the dark slide, that way there's no risk of forgetting to close the shutter and exposing the film. You'll also need a very sturdy tripod for large format so the camera will not move when inserting the film holder. I use a large Ravelli one made for shooting video, it's heavy to carry around but very rigid and easy to use.

Oh Ya. Now we are talking. Intrepid 4X5 is a very very good starting point, and that was an excellent first effort. When loading the film in the holder hold the film by its lower edge where you can feel the notches with your index finger. The notches end up at the bottom left, and it is much easier to confirm correct loading if doubt sets in, which does quite frequently with me, as the notches are much more accessible than being on top right. Find yourself a heavier focusing cloth and get used to covering the film holder with the cloth to keep stray light out, once you have pulled the slide. Close the aperture lever after the last critical focusing prior to inserting the film holder. It is much too easy to pull the slide and expose the film to light through the open aperture. For now, only practice the front tilt to increase the depth of filed, but leave all other adjustments alone. You can use the rear standard to swing backwards, in order to increase the depth of field , but this causes distortion of the perspective. You can use it as an artistic effect. Avoid at all costs adding more lenses to the system until you have convinced yourself that LF photography is for you. BTW, get to know your lens covering circle. This is critical to avoid over adjusting and cutting the corners off, usually a Nikon W, Schneider Symmar or Rodenstock N lens, have around a 72 degrees covering circle. When you have got it all dialled in correctly, hold your breath and enjoy the magic that is LF photography. Look forward to seeing the camera used much much more.

35mm and medium format doesn't slow me down but LF slows me down big time. All the steps to make sure I don't mess up. And then changing film in the holders takes forever. Still love it though.

Beautiful results, Roger! I have an old Zeiss Ikon 4x5 that I've been tempted to use again after running through an old film pack but I can't justify the cost of sheets

Well I never knew Ikons went to 4x5, just googled it! Pack of 25 Ilford D100 about £50. If you go sparingly and make them last (2 or 3 sheets a planned shoot).

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss. Volta 135/7. I suppose it's technically 9x12cm, but I think 4x5 would fit in the proper back slides. When I bought it a decade ago it came with this pack of 16 exposure tab/sheet pull thing, so I never had to deal with individual sheets until development time. It's too attractive to keep on the shelf.

Yes, we've been there and the mistakes keep coming but so do the results! Eventually. I recently shot 4 images that I was keen to do for some time. Really took my time with exposure, focus etc. Could I get the film out of the holder into the tank in my dark bag? Of course not. Note to self make sure you only turn dark slides grey side out when you actually have film in the holder! Luckily I was back in the same place 2 weeks later!

Hi Roger. Have you was always double checked if the film isin the right "plane" or "level" inside the holders? On your lightscreen it looks strange to me that the two "broader" areas on top are not the same size. Just from watching the video I see a chance that one side is correctly on the bottom of the holder and the other in the same "level" as the darkslide. The darkslide can go over it. If this stated true it would not be a light leak and it will result in focussing problems due to the fact the film plane is not flat. (and you scratch the surface with the slide). I know it is tricky to explain, but if you put the now developed negatives back in the carrier and play around with "what could go wrong" you should see what I mean. When loading the holders I always feel the whole way on both sides to be clear for the darkslide before moving it in. Best Regards, Peter

Cheers Peter. I think I found the issue. Time will tell but I think I had the neg one side under the correct lip and the other side under the dark slide lip.

TIP: When folding the camera make sure that the glass is set in LANDSCAPE orientation and that the front standard element knobs are all loose. Otherwise your focusing knob will be pushed out (it is glued). It is obvious in the video that you did not fold it correctly and that the back element was pushing against the focusing knob.

brush the insides of the film holders with anti static brush (or vacuum them), then blow them out. Once film is inserted put the holders in an enclosed plastic bag so the holders stay away from dust. That's the best I can offer. Internal condensation and dust are the photographer's frequent enemies. Develop the patience of a bear or an old man fishing with nothing better to do.
