thank you.. This explains why my 70cm fuse -used for dock starting- works best (already at the surface of the water) and a 60-65cm works better for the constantly changing conditions during a prone ride. Also, it is my opinion, that like in flying, the bigger/stable the front wing the smaller the back wing can be. (less surface area to "push up and down" when grave digging). I've tested both. I don't SUP but you did an excellent no nonsense / common sense explanation that is easy to follow. Thanks again

I love these comparison videos! They make it so much easier to decide what kind of gear to buy without having the luxury of trying everything first. On an unrelated note, what do you think your ultimate setup for flat water pumping the longest distance would be?
@OskarJohansson1
@OskarJohansson1 Жыл бұрын
That’s exactly it, there is a lot of cost with gear in this sport so if we can thin out the options and understand it then guys aren’t wasting money on the wrong stuff! 🙏 That’s a super interesting idea… if you’re going for distance it’s going to be totally different than east of paddling up. I would go for the biggest and highest aspect Foil you can get. It will still paddle up fairly easy without cooking yourself, but then when you’re up you’re on something that is quick and with a lot of glide to cover the furthest distance

@@OskarJohansson1 Came here to ask a similar question and also say thanks for the vids. Really helpful.. So in relation to flat water pumping, would a shorter fuselage help with getting more time and/or distance.. I'm using the Sabfoil W1350L for pure flat water pumping and have been stuck at around the 90sec mark for about 6 months. Am trying to get to 3mins as this will comfortable allow me to dock hop in my area. Current fuselage is 71cm long.

@@steveothedeveo Stoked to hear man! Its a bit of a tricky one to answer and so many aspects to it. When you are pumping what is caused you to stop at 90s? Is it your legs giving up with too much lactic acid? Or is it your cardio giving up? The shorter fuse once you are up on foil and pumping will give you a faster and more aerobic pump. This will work your aerobic system more. Howver the longer fuse you can drive a little harder and cover more ground per pump, but it is more taxing on the quads. Depending on what is giving up for you at 90s can determine how you try and work those different systems. There is also so much technique you can do to work different systems.
@steveothedeveo
@steveothedeveo 9 ай бұрын
Beautifully explained. Your foresight is spot on. It's my legs giving out. Which could be because of the longer fuselage but am well aware working on my technique would be the more appropriate long term fix. Thought I'd ask to see if a shorter fuselage would help short term. So much going on with this foiling caper. It's fantastic guys like yourself are making these vids. Much appreciated.

@@steveothedeveo Shorter fuse means you can pump at a higher cadence which means you are taxing your aerobic system more so than your legs. Try it out and see if it helps.. 🤔

So I dial in my mast position when I am in the surf. I like to have my stance in the same position when I am both paddling and when I am on foil. It’s just one less variable to think about during the paddle up. I will go into the surf with a tool in my pocket and catch a bunch of waves moving my mast around until I find that similar point. On this board that is as position 11 in the tracks. Oh I am so interested in that stingray. Heard a lot of great things and a really out of the box idea

Hey Oskar, great video mate. Did you notice any difference between paddles in regards to stiffness with one being adjustable and one not? Thinking of trying an adjustable paddle mainly for paddling easier on foil and catching those swells 😊
@OskarJohansson1
@OskarJohansson1 Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! I didnt notice any loss or difference in stiffness, but I am also short (174cm) so I am using the paddle with very little extension. I think for a taller guy with the handle extended it might add some flex, but for me I didn't notice any.

Thanks for the informative video. I noticed that you place your mast near the front of the mast track. I have the Armstrong 7' 2" DW board. For light wind winging. I place the edge of the mast base near the very back of the track(for light wind winging) -- I using the Sab 1350 (span. of 135 cm., 1800 sq. cm. area, A R of 9.5) for both light wind winging and flat water paddle ups. I've moved the mast forward about 1/2" at a time and have gone from "5" to "7 1/2" as noted on the track to try and engage the foil for paddling up. I weigh around 71 - 72 kilos (155 to 158 pounds). I'm getting close but need some advice. Should I just move the mast to near the front of the track? Thanks.

@OskarJohansson1 Жыл бұрын
Hi mate! I haven't riddent eh SAB 1350 so its hard for me to say for that exact foil, but if you are struggling to feel the foil engage during the paddle up then moving it forward will definitely help. I would also check out all of Jeremy Riggs videos on youtube to get some tips on the paddle up as well, he has some great tips on technique.

@@OskarJohansson1 Thanks for the reply. I'll try moving the mast forward and see what happens. I've noticed that when I have moved the mast forward a small amount the board is more difficult to paddle in a straight line. Also, where I position my feet (a little further back) it seems to make popping up the nose a little easier. Do you change your position on the board depending on the size of foil you use? I think there are a lot that goes into this that is forgotten or not really thought about by the "elite" foilers. I sure have a lot of respect for you and the guys who make this look "easy". I have watched Jeremy Riggs -- he seems to have a paddle up super power.

Great video! Why ride a large MA rather than a HA like the 1525?
@OskarJohansson1
@OskarJohansson1 Жыл бұрын
I only use the MA as its got more low speed lift so is something that most people learning to paddle up would use. If I was going to do it just for myself or for DW then 100% I would always ride a HA wing. They are just much quicker and so much pump/glide.

Not DW yet. Ive experimented with fuse lengths for Wing Foil & Prone, i was stalling on shorter fuse with HA for Winging For prone im on a short fuse and Medium aspect. Turning on a long fuse feels like long board v short fuse feels like snappy short board. Ive been working on this for a year now still dialing in, however there progress😬

Hi, Oskar! Thank you for great videos! Could you advise what to choose for me to learn paddle up in flat water? I'm 69kg. I have Armstrong DW board 107l, paddles 72, 91, 102, 115, masts 60, 72.5, 79, all armstrong fuses, all large wings incl new APF, all tails. What paddle, fuse, mast, wing and tail is better to choose to learn paddle up? And where is better placement of mast? Thank you!

@OskarJohansson1 9 ай бұрын
Hi mate! Stoked you're enjoying the videos. You have an amazing quiver of gear, I am jealous! Your board size is great, I assume you have some SUP background seeing how many paddles you have? In general the larger size paddles are easier, but for guys with strong SUP backgrounds and good technique the smaller paddles are easier for a high cadence. I would use the 105 at your weight personally, but it does require a lot of power to pull through. If you feel like you can't get that high cadence then maybe size down one. As for foils I would go with the APF 1675, 202 tail, 60 fuse, and 79 mast with the mast at 9 on the board.... I like the APF foils 2cm further back than where I ride the HAs so just go with that from where you have the HAs. The rest of the setup is more about what you know and what feels comfortable to you. I love the 60 fuse as an allaroudner and I feel very comfortable on it, but that is up to you.

@@OskarJohansson1 Thank you for detailed answer! I don't have much experience in SUP, but I can paddle straight :) My cadence is better with QB Stingray 72 paddle. Why APF1675 better than APF1880 for me for learning? I have them both. I still can't pump & bounce board to lift it from water yet. I tried MA1750, APF1880 and CF2400. I will try APF1675, may be it will be easier to accelerate. I didn't tried APF for winging yet, but CF2400 much easier to lift from water in 6-7 knots. I use 45cm mast for better acceleration, once I will lift it up from water, I will change mast.

Shims change the angle of the stab which would then also increase the vertical radius. Does adding shims have the same effect on pumping as using a longer fuse?
@OskarJohansson1
@OskarJohansson1 Жыл бұрын
Yes exactly, if you add shim for more lift then you tighten that radius and it makes it easier for the board to release. It is a lesser effect than chsnging the fuse, but still very noticeable. That would be a good suggestion for dialling in your setup and way less expensive than buying a new fuse!!
@DownwindFrother
@DownwindFrother Жыл бұрын
@OskarJohansson1 would that be a plus or minus shim? I'm guessing something like a +1 to add more lift. I'm new to shimming 😊
