"Does God Exist" Debate with Sivarama Swami

On the 19th June 2015, HH Sivarama Swami had a mock debate on the existence of God at the Pandava Sena Alumni program. HG Bhuta Bhavana prabhu played the role of an aggressive atheistic interviewer (Jeremy Paxman, Richard Dawkins style) but HH Sivarama Swami soundly defeated him.
The many devotees present in the audience were really inspired and found it very educational in how to defend the existence of God.

In Mahabarata, Krsna says that He has left clues of His existence all over the world.. you need eyes to see..... it comes from a heart that is purified over time. Ego is in the way. No dear chance is a very vague term. Chance is something that we believe we have no influence over. Like how many people i will meet today. Because world is a disordered system. Very difficult to formulate it, likely immpossible. In case of your niece being born with a birth defect and the cause of it is likely encoded in her DNA or her mother or external factors. If you truly want to know why your niece had this problem, you must be ready to explore all the reasons behind it. Rather than playing make belief.

I have heard once one guru saying that Vedas state that there is a law in this universe that the product of the source can never have more BASIC FEATURES than the source itself. It can have fewer features but never more. So, by combining 2 colors (3 sources: 2 colors and something or someone to combine them) we will get another color but never a sound, so we do not come from some inner matter or from amoeba. The original source must be alive, conscious, intelligent, with powers beyond our imagination, must have a Form and be formless at the same time because the original source must have in itself all the elements of creation.

It is apparent by the vast number of religions in the world that a multitude of ideas of God's will and his identity exist. If God is the ONE then these ideas are in conflict and by extension are false. Knowledge of God's identify and his will appears to be beyond the capability of mortals. If you possess the "truth" in these matters, it can only be a matter of personal faith not a matter of knowledge. DO you claim to know who God is and what is his will? I need to change my statement to the more accurate proposition that since I can't know who god is and I can't know his will than I can't be expected to follow his will. If god wants to punish me for not following his will but will not tell me what his will is then god must be a sadist.Perhaps there is someone who knows who god is and what is his will. The external aspects of different religion maybe different but the essence is the same which is !) There is a God 2) We are his servants 3) We worship God by chanting his holy names. If you do a serious investigation then you will see this commonality in all religions. God is known through his word (i.e. scripture), I follow the Bhagavad Gita which tells me who God is and who we are and what our duty is? If you are sincere and scientific then please invest in a copy of the Bhgavad Gita As It Is which can be purchased from amazon and then investigate it.. Spirituality is also objective and for which there is evidence of being verified.

Bad gets created due to free will of people. God has provided enough for all people to satisfy their hunger, but why some people die by hunger? It's because other humans are hoarding, not wanting to share, gaining monopoly, establishing ownership on already existing natural resources, diverting and exploiting resources. God has no part in the cruel selfish intentions of people. That is our free will. With this free will we can become generous, kind, merciful, do charity, treat everyone equally, share food and resources etc. But we choose to do the bad thing hence we create bad. Also, God isn't controlling everything actively all the time, but he is the Supreme controller. Example: We created motor. We switch it on. It starts working due to functioning of it's internal mechanics powered with energy, supply of energy amd creation of mechanics is also done by us, but after we turn the motor on, it starts working automatically, eventually we turn it off. Here, the Supreme authority and control over the motor is we humans that is turning it on or off. But the functions of mechanics happening is partly independent with the flow of time, we created those mechanics expecting it to function in a certain way but the motor can dysfunction as well. If there is any problem in the mechanics, we fix it, and start the motor again. But the coordination between the different parts of the motor r partially independent. Here the example is given of a non living thing which has no free will. It is just for understanding. While if we replace ourselves with the motor, we have free will. Which makes us more prone to doing dysfunctional activities(sins, materialism, hurting others, etc.) which is not our actual function that God expected while creating us. This body is the motor. But it has consciousness, power of which we r abusing all the time. I hope i was able to clear some of ur confusion cuz clearing confusion on such deep topics ain't easy on texts and comments.

I don't think this guruji has a clue about the so called law of induction. Just because everything we know had a cause, doesn't mean that every other thing has a cause. Coming to such conclusions is just another belief, a belief in the "law of induction". I think he should read Hume: Hume asks on what grounds we come to our beliefs about the unobserved on the basis of inductive inferences? He presents an argument in the form of a dilemma which appears to rule out the possibility of any reasoning from the premises to the conclusion of an inductive inference. Besides, the act of a coin flip may be by some one, but the turning out to be head, or tail for that matter, has no cause, and that's why it is random - without any "thing" making the choice. But a classical coin is not a purely random thing, so the "coin" I'm talking about is the Quantum coin - an example would be spin state of an electron. Either way, belief in god or in things like the law of induction, is ultimately a belief, not a fact. Also, it is better to have no answer than to have one that cannot be validated but requires "faith", not fact.

The thing that has no cause, is the universe as a whole, the universe itself. Can't you see? If you cannot 'see', that's your problem. Unlike you, who come up with zero evidence God theories and are in denial of there being no exlaination, we accept the fact. "Show me, show me, show me.." We're showing you, it's you who are blinded by your faith in the God theory, who unlike science, cannot show any evidence. It's not just an individual's karma at play all the time. There are many forces/ many karmas in the universe and the resultant outcome is the net effect of all those karma's at play . There is family karma, community karma, state's karma etc . For example if you are born to rich and influential parents , you will have a comparative easy life ( because the struggles your parents did to accumulate wealth , you will get benefit from it ) . Similarly if your family did bad to others , they may try to avenge it through you/ harm you . After Pearl Harbor attack , many Japanese Americans were sent to concentration camps . In this example the bad karma of a nation state ( Japan ) affected its subjects . Also the Geeta says not doing the right action at right time ( Akarma) or lack of karma may also lead to less favorable outcomes . In the example asked , it's not only the lady who was attacked had individual karma at play , but also of the state and the mute spectator's akarma at play . The state let it happen : the police were not vigilant enough to control the thugs ( their lack of action ) , and neither did the mute spectators help. This will lead to bad karma for the state , if it can't control law and order at a large scale, it may disintegrate. Similarly if the spectators didn't help the lady , there will be a time when the goons get more courage ( knowing that people don't help victims ) and attack those mute spectators for robbery etc as well .

Your comment provides proof that you have not really read any scriptures of Sanatan Dharma and just are following your own interpretation of things without checking what's given in the Vedas. He is speaking in English that too to an atheist so he used the words servant of lord. Now speaking in English can't be co-related to Christianity.

Bhakti itself means doing something for God in the mood of love or show love towards him and by doing so lord gets happy and we get more happier then Me , and because we serve lord in loving mood devotional way we are his servants that's why in vedic we call ourselves as das !! Dharmesh Teji what you fail to realize is that atheist(the word..lol) would not exist if it wasn't for theist asserting the existence of a supernatural being who happens to be omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent & of course invisible, what to speak of having a NON-interventional stance for 99.99999% of 200,000 years since the emergence of the human species. You see we do not have a position on the existence of anything supernatural, and so it follows that the burden of proof is with the one asserting the claim that a supernatural being of any kind exists. I could easily keep u very busy by simply asserting that 1. you have a diamond buried in your yard. 2. I have an invisible leprechaun in my garden 3. a tooth fairy took my child's fallen teeth 4. A Creator does exist but not in the concept that man makes it to be. God is both female and male energy God is not flesh God is purely spirit and exists and all of humanity and it works for laws of the universe and it must always be balanced the people on the Earth cannot live in chaos for long periods of time before the Earth corrects in chastise the people that lives on it. When we reduce God to be in a man then you will say stupid things like the judge scenario, the judge has put down a lot of judgments on people that have been innocent so with that being said he did not use a good example or an analogy. God is in everything and everyone and everything, as an Indian we want to create an idea of creating a figurehead, God. To me this seems to be following a western view of creating an image of God, and seems to be picking and choosing the true Santana Dharma ideas of true ideas to make it a very Christian ideology of following a certain person that is created by humans that we call God. This is not true Santana Dharma but a imperialistic view of breaking and using certain things from the ancient culture that knew truth and life, and using these words and knowledge without truly understanding it.
