You're right, it is a pointless question to atheists, but why are atheists at the BBC all of sudden concerned with a very minor theological topic? This isn't even a major issue amoungst ordanary Christians let alone expert theologians. The burden of proof is not on Atheists and the lack of evidence is enough justification to disbelieve. All intelligent people are not monotheists, in fact they are much more likely than the general population to be atheists, even going back multiple generations. Atheists aren't missing the purpose of their existence (what purpose would that be in your worldview anyway?), no external entity has the right to dictate to a free being what their purpose is. There is no "next" life.

We can only speak of the masculinity or femininity of God if God's self-revelation prompts us to do that. God's self-revelation prompts us towards the male sex in referring to "Him" and not "Her", if we accept the Biblical revelation, and at its climax the revelation of Jesus. And whatever is beyond God's self-revelation to us we do not know and do not need to know, however real that "beyond-ness" of God may be. .... and so I do not consider that great hymn "Immortal, invisible, God only wise", much beloved by older Anglicans, to be an actually Christian hymn.

If there exists an ultimate creative consciousness, it would contain all creative aspects including what we think of as "male" and "female". Particular faith traditions, on the other hand, have been useful propaganda tools for authoritarian rule for thousands of years. Much of philosophy is atheistic and there are atheist philosophers going back to ancient history. When it comes to morality, there are many religious fundamentalists who believe the absurd lie that morality is dictated by a divine being and in extreme cases that they are forbidden to think for themselves, to perform any kind of moral reasoning. People of the past were objectively less intelligent due to inferior environmental conditions, even in the recent past as documented by the flynn effect. It takes courage to talk about such things on the BBC in today's culture; both guests did well, as did the interviewer. But the bishop's ready rejection of the association between God's self-revealed maleness and 'patriarchy' seems to me to go too far. After Eve's and Adam's fall, God says to Eve, "He will rule over you" (whether that be a good thing or not). Writing to the Corinthians, Paul says, "The head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God" - implying an ordained authority structure. He says the same thing to the Ephesians. At the end of the Bible the whole Church is pictured as a bride, married at last to Christ the bridegroom. Patriarchy is not a male invention but how, in this world, we are made. It is up to the Church to show that it need and should not be oppressive, but rather informed by the way God models fatherly love and Christ models sacrificial brotherly love.

The woman cleric was completely out of her depth. She failed completely to see that (1) Jesus taught us to call God 'Father' - so she claims to know better than Jesus, which is not a good claim for a professed Christian to make; (2) by denying the use of the Biblical language for God because she has problems with it, she must end up with an impersonal, agnostic understanding of "god". In other words, if you abandon the Bible's language, you deny that Jesus is the final and perfect revelation of God who speaks the truth and you reduce Christian assertions about God to human projections - which is exactly what the atheist Ludwig Feuerbach claimed in the 1840s. So she is on a trajectory to atheism.

My personal opinion is God is Gender Neutral, non racist, non homophobic, kind, gentle, but most importantly, wise in that he is religious, but belongs to every religion and doesn't hold sway with religious zealots or radicals. If we go by the Trinity, at least two-thirds are explicitly described as male, the Father and the Son. If we look at the Old Testament in particular, God is described as the Lord. It is clear that the original authors of the Bible intended their God to be male. It has to be recognised that Christianity, and all other Abrahamic faiths, were created within patriarchal societies. As such, women were always seen as inferior to men within those cultures, which still finds expression today. Indeed, one of the only supporting pieces of evidence suggesting Christ's existence at all is that the Bible describes a woman as the first to see him after he was resurrected rather than a man, a lie about a man seeing him would have been more authoritative.

If we assume that god is a man-made construct, it is easy to see why god is male. If we assume the reverse then none of the proscriptions against women or their involvement in that society, such as not visiting the church while menstruating or not allowing women to teach men, make any sense.

@giuseppe mendoza I didn't say that you didn't answer my question, I said your second statement contradicted your first. I understood your answer well enough, that god introduced "himself" to humanity as "father" and "lord" as a means of providing people with the understanding of "his" nature. But by choosing to answer it in that way, you contradict your original position that the concept of god transcends gender. He could have introduced himself simply as god and humanity could fearfully refer to "it", but humanity was not ready to do so when the Bible was written, edited and translated over the centuries. Instead, the men who wrote and used the Bible for their source of authority used it to maintain their positions of power in society, which is why two-thirds of the trinity is explicitly referred to as male.

It is interesting, is it not, that serious and intelligent believers in God will state, upon being confronted with the lack of evidence to support the existence of the God they claim, "That's why they call it faith!" But if the evidence for your God is all-encompassing and ever-present, enlighten me oh great one! I've read roughly three-hundred books in my life and six-hundred and thirty documentaries at a minimum (the latter figure being taken from my IMDb account) and attended university for four years. This is hardly the profile of an unthinking person.

The laws are secular, the media secular, the education system even if in catholic or other religious schools are still part of the secular-materialist conditioning, they have integrated with secular culture for decades. I was in Catholic schools from 5 till 16, but they still taught political secularism, and never taught monotheistic philosophy and ideology.
