I’ve only had Hornby and a few Bachman wagons. My latest purchase was the Hornby Crigglestone Coliery wagon which is personal to me since I lived at Crigglestone (Wakefield, West Yorkshire). Keep up the good work Sam
@johnd88924 жыл бұрын
Sam. Good choice of Hornby wagons. These are some of the highest quality best value wagons from Hornby. A problem with Hornby is that they also sell some much less accurate old tooling examples at much the same price. This variation has caught out a very experienced modeller I know who started to build up some British outline trains, but chose some of the older tooling items giving less value. A quick indicator is look for NEM coupler pockets as a usual indicator of new tooling.

I'm not sure and it just might be with this one and the one after it. 10:39 If you look towards the corners (left and right) there is a couple circular indents. I done think that’s pretty prototypical and looks more like where the molding pins eject the wagon out of the mold. Obviously can cover up with a load but just something I noticed.

I have about 11 or 12 of those Hornby fuel tankers and all have different running numbers on them, but five of them are Shell tankers. Most of them are from the Hornby RailRoad range. I like them. All of those with a locomotive and brake van fulfils and full straight and part of a curve on my layout, so I will probably don't need anymore!

I did have a 7UP wagon when I had a train set with an LMS Jinty I think, with a Tango Van, and a Pepsi Tanker and something else, I think it was a Pop Freight Train or something, not too sure, it was a Hornby set from 2000-01 or something, I wished I still had it, but I flogged the set, because I had no room for it, but seeing those 7UP wagons have brought back memories of playing with that set, along with one Thomas And Percy Passenger and Goods Set, with Thomas, Percy, Annie, Clarabel, two Troublesome Trucks and a milk van, which were so many good times.

Starting my railway in late 2018 I was amazed at how many and I don’t use the term lightly “crap” products are out there. Hornby so far for me has been very good in all aspects of their products I’ve bought however my god Dapol stung me a few years back when I bought some of their wagons and disappointed was an understatement. I have given them a second chance more so because I wanted Lms branded items and only they had a tidy range. Not tried oxford yet but may consider it. Golden valley hobbies wagons popped up in my searches but god knows how that would go.

Good evening Sam. I agree with you on the overall aspect of the wagons. Yes, Hornby wagons are good, there is a great variety of liveries and types in their range, the ones I have does not stand like a sore thumb besides the Oxford Rail ones. But as you said, Hornby wagons are overpriced. In my opinion, they ought to be sold no more than GBP 10, any of them. See a 5 to 7 plank wagons cost up to GBP 15 in their range, it is a nonsense, especially when you make the comparison with what Oxford Rail manufactures. Three stars for the overall value, you are spot on with this point. Anyway, coming from Station Road Model Railway KZbin channel, I have found a solution to Dapol's drooping couplers problem : unscrew the coupler bar after having popped out the axles, trim a little the plastic hump that supports him with a file until you have the coupler support stand perfectly horizontal with the hump trimmed at the right size, screw back the coupler support and the drooping coupler problem is solved. I have some Dapol couplers to fix this way on my own fleet, and buy some car wheels weights for another Dapol wagon that is too light, and derails all the time, based on one of your video for the solution. Thanks for this video, I'm waiting for the one on Bachmann. Just one last idea : why not try a "worst of" video, with the Dapol egg vans (unmodified, of course) coupled to your Heljan GWR 0-6-0 T ? That would be fun, especially if you includes one of your interesting experiment...

Hi Sam, another good video in this time of self quarantine. One other thing I did notice was the recessed circles in the wagon floors. I think they come from the mould ejector pins, even if they were visible on the "Oxford" wagons, not very realistic. If "Hornby" had removed them (filled them in) it would have been a plus for them. As far as price is concerned, all 4 wheeled open wagons in any company's range tend to be the same price, be they a 1 plank or an 8 plank. Just an observation. Regards, Alan.

The problem I keep having with Oxford rail is the NEM pockets aren't tight enough so couplings drop out. All of mine have a blue sticky material holding them on. Won't mention the product name. Oxford couplings also appear incompatible with both hornby and Pecos tension lock uncoupling ramp system.

Another fascinating comparison Sam. One thought, keeping things scientific, if the wagon mass is higher, its momentum will be higher so in the rolling tests we should anticipate the wagon travelling further even for the same resistance. something like d = ma and a = ??? I'll leave that to you!!!

Oxford Rail and Hornby are pretty much almost tied when it comes to making rolling stock. I think Oxford Rail still wins with producing rolling stock because they're really well detailed and also pretty cheap. The Hornby rolling stock is a little bit more expensive but you nearly get the same stuff as what Oxford Rail has with their rolling stock.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yeah they're very close - I think Oxford win it though! :D

Hornby use the same under frames on all there open wagons, in my book the best RTR are BACHMANN.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
I don't think they do - there was more than one different underframe on the three I bought! Can't wait to try some Bachmann ones though! :D Cheers, Sam :)
@raymondo1624 жыл бұрын
if hornby's were a similar price to oxford's which would you choose ??
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
It'd be much closer then - it depends whether you value the detail or the quality more highly! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@Sideways1011004 жыл бұрын
I will say I prefer Hornby, even though Oxford Rail have more detailed stock and Hornby are a little more expensive, I really don't think an extra £2.50 is that big of a dealbreaker and Hornby is massively various with their stock, and I like variety
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Good choice mate - yes the variety is definitely a huge pro for Hornby! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Sam, I'm afraid I didn't start with those Wagons!! 😜😆 Of course I was in the U.S., in 1974.... Seriously, excellent Review again! 👍👍 You didn't overlook a critical factor... Couplers. The best Wagon isn't worth the box it sits in, IF you can't couple it to anything else!! 😳😖 I am serious. I've seen reviews where that was overlooked. Once to my peril. 😠 Now *I may have been able to fix it, but I'm an experienced Modeller. What about the novice or worse, the first timer.... That could end the Hobby before it even gets going! So thank you dear Sir!! 👋👋👋👋👋 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

Talking about the Packaging. The amount of Plastic is disturbing for these times. They are going to have to reduce that in the future. When I looked at them I thought immediately of the plastic going directly into landfill.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's true - but the amount of plastic isn't that great, and it does do a great job of protecting - better than cardboard! I keep all the packing anyway - and most collectors do too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I think that's a fair review. I do like the Hornby wagons, I think the brand name has a slight premium. How come you haven't included Dapol?

@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Adam - yes that's very true! Yes I was put off from Dapol's wagons ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@TheLordFinwe4 жыл бұрын
This will likely hurt Sam. I would rather get Dapol cars. as a Welshman i must honor them as they make their stuff in Wales. plus out of my roster of freight cars over half is Dapol and I have no problem with them. the egg vans are that exception their brake rigging and wheel alignments tend to cause problems but those issues did not show up in any of their other rolling stock. also forgot to mention I have Kadee couplers on all my stock as I also have American, Australian and Swiss 2 rail stock in the collection.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
haha that's okay mate - I must say I haven't tried many of Dapol's wagons - are you sure they're made in Wales? I thought that was only the 3D printed stuff! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@BattleshipOrion4 жыл бұрын
Ehh, it depends on the manufacture, and region you live. Here in the US, the cars (wagons) are very different than the UK. It also depends on what your modeling, if your modeling a BNSF train, the motive power (locomotive), and the cars would very different from an English train of the same sorts. Also cars between the US, and UK are different. A boxcar that is 60'x9' is not going to be found on UK rail networks, same with a box wagon in the UK. Overall no-one makes the best because of regional availability. Stay safe Sam, Csx68 ~ending and posting communication uplink~

Are the bodies on these the same as the old ex. Dapol ones? These look like they've had a new chassis and a shiny paint job, but still the same old clunky bodies. I feel like £12.50 is a bit of a Micky take! (Also, do the brake levers move on these like they do on the Oxford Rail wagons?) For me, Oxford Rail 100%!
