On The Dale Jr. Download, Dale and Denny Hamlin discuss the state of the charter system in NASCAR and the pros and cons of starting a team in the Cup Series. If the sport expands to a higher number of charters, how much should a new team pay?

Denny's arguing for what benefits Denny right now. When he says "All well managed teams deserve to run for a championship & make a modest profit," that is not the way anything works in the real world. The Dallas Cowboys are well managed, but they do not deserve to sniff the cleats of champions. Denny makes a good argument for the owners, but you can see him pull up on several topics.

I’ve quite an off and on love hate relationship with Denny over the years. I have played devils advocate for him a couple of times but he has also pissed me off in the past as well. I think he actually had a better attitude until about the mid 2010s. While I may not be his biggest fan I actually do like 23XI. As a fan of both Busch brothers I did enjoy that Kansas race.

1) the line “sometimes the talent stays on the sideline because the team has to stay in business” applies to almost ever type of developmental system. It definitely applies to every sport. Little Jonny is a talented ball player, but his parent can’t afford equipment or the travel team or whatever, so he doesn’t play. I mean, I feel like that line applies so much more to racing, because racing is outrageously expensive to begin with. 2) the charter system may ultimately be the thing that kills NASCAR, hate to say it. Part of what helped NASCAR, at least in my opinion, grow was the fact that you could show up to any track any week with a car, and as long as you passed tech and qualified, you had a chance to race for the same prize money everyone else did. Today, you show up to the track, and you’re racing for pennies on the dollar. It’s unsustainable 3) pains me to say this, but if JRM joins cup, it’s gonna hurt their entire operation. You have to believe that they take a full advantage of the information and resources provided by that Hendrick funding. If JRM joins cup, Hendrick has to divest, and I see it hurting not only the cup stuff, but the affinity stuff as well

I would LOVE to see Dale bring his JR Motorsports to CUP. I know Dale and Denny are good friends and it was Dale who had discovered him and brought him to his first NASCAR even at Daytona back in the early 2000's. Maybe with Denny's push to help these teams succeed (Eric Estepp has had some great videos about what Hamlin's doing on his channel) Dale will move his team into cup. To me it's a simple fix. Cap the field at the absolute highest number feasible. Growing up in the late 90s to 2000s that number was 43 cars. the purse money will always have 43 cars in mind. If 50 cars show up then the slowest 7 go home. If 40 show up then the purse for 41,42,43 is kept by Nascar for maybe another expense or purse. Now regarding the 36 charter teams. They should get bonus money from Nascar at the end of the year that distrutes all profits from the season to the teams. Obviously non charter teams don't receive this money. I also believe Nascar drivers should have a salary cap like other sports. It'll help with team costs and sponsor costs.
@jamesdb7115
@jamesdb7115 2 жыл бұрын
From what I understand that salary cap is what this next gen is, as they can't modify any of the parts. It's probably not THEE salary cap. I'd go with salary caps with driver pay too (and if that's what you're referring to. I apologize). You have 4 drivers, you can't have the dream team of what Hendrick (Kahne, JG, JJ, Jr) or Rousch (Kennseth, Biff, Edwards) or Gibbs currently has. Those drivers get to a) go to their own team (Hamlin) or force to sign elsewhere. Just spit balling here.

drew1212, Dale Jr, and Kelley, have both stated that the Cup series is a huge financial process to enter in order to find success. JRM has done quite well in the Xfinity series as has Dale Jr. Dale Jr did fairly well in the Cup series, but it was funded by others. DEI had a great future until gold-digger greedy Teresa took over. Dale Jr, and Kelley, tried informing her that she was going in the wrong direction, but Teresa cared less about their opinions and business experience. Teresa knew nothing about business ethics, nor cared. With her, it was always about money for herself. She had it all and destroyed it. DEI now no longer exists.

Big fan of Dale Jr. (and his father before that). But I would rather that the Earnhardts remain focused on the Xfinity teams. Until/unless Hendrick, Childress, Gibbs, or Petty downsizes or quits the Cup series, then it makes no financial sense for the Earnhardts. Yes, new teams have started like Hamlin's, Track House, ect. But as far as I know, those new teams do not currently have any teams in Xfinity. I could always be wrong.😁

Denny is going to be a great car owner not just for himself, but for all these teams. He's really been speaking out in support of the business model for these NASCAR owners to make it and succeed. Not a fan of his driving style on the track, but I'm all for the Denny Hamlin owner and what he's doing for the sport. Being one of the veterans in the sport, he's really speaking out for the garage area. We don't see Kevin Harvick (who's become very quiet) or Kyle Busch ( who just seems to be too inmature) stepping up. So Denny is a good veteran presence for these guys.

To a point I think Charters ruined everything. You have teams that want to expand from 2 to 3 or 4 cars and you have new teams that want to come into the Cup series. They won't though, because the charters, you have to pay 10-12 million dollars for a charter, if not more, when there's charters available. Sure without the charters people like Chase Elliott may not make the race, due to issues in qualifying, but that's part of racing. Although you can't really get rid of the charters now, because teams spent 10+ million dollars for them.

I think there should be 43 cars 36 Starters and 4-7 ( 40-43 ) qualifying to get in every week and the Winner has always got to make $ . No matter what. Even if it’s something like if 1 of those 4-7 Qualifiers happens to finally Win 1 then they get a larger payout, something like that Because Winner has always got to make $ , especially if 1 of those cars somehow pulls that off. They got to make $ just to race for it to even be worth going out to battle for final 4-7 qualifying spots. I think it should be 43 cars. We need more cars out there 44, 45 , even 50 would be dope.

Always liked looking in the Sports section of the paper back in the 80's and seeing what each driver made for that particular race. Was more amazed the Joe Blow took 3rd and made hundreds of thousands less then the Hot shot who DNFed. Why don't they show the pay outs anymore?

Since you left fulltime on track, I havnt followed the races often, But I watch your podcasts, watch how your nationwide series cars are doing. Nascar, wake up! Denny said it best “A legend wants in” but cant because of current financial bubbles that Nascar can change. I know for one, if you Dale, come into the top series with a team, all Jr nation will bump ratings up and watch every dang race (or close to it). The top series needs Dale. Even if its not him in the cars. If he is the team owner of a car or 2, that would be enough. Nascar change your payouts! You will regret it. Also: Denny I am very impressed with you and the way you speak, also congrats on your first team owner win. Kurt fan or not, to see both your emotions/joy was a tear jerker and much deserved. Congrats Kurt And Denny

He lost me when he used Andretti Autosports as his defense. He even shoots himself in the foot by saying F1 makes over a billion dollars per year. When your sport/industry makes over a billion dollars a year and has competitors investing hundreds of millions of dollars into their cars, then yeah the teams/companies are going to be upset when another US backmarker joins the sport. Personally, I don’t see why Andretti doesn’t just partner with Haas to make one mega US team, and possibly attract more US motorsports figures to all go in together, rather than start his own team that is going to be at the back of the grid for years to come. Anyways, going back to Hamlin, based off this interview, he doesn’t seem to have a grasp on where NASCAR is at. When you have tracks across the country tearing down grandstands along the backstretches because fans aren’t showing up, you need to be encouraging people to compete as much as possible. If they want to make things interesting, yet still keep a somewhat charter system, why not model the charter system similar to that of European soccer leagues: each year you have 20 or 30 charter positions, and at the end of each year, the bottom 3 or 4 teams are booted out of the charter and the 3/4 best non-charter teams, become charter members. NASCAR is all about making anything more competitive (ie stage points, cautions at the ends of each stage to bunch the field back up, a wacky playoff system, etc) that you’d think they’d be all on board with this. However, I still think more money should be given to non-charter teams regardless.

JRM should be in the cup and they need to find away to get in. And get rid of the driver limits like Xfinity! If a team wants more than 4 drivers they should be allowed more it’s their money and if they can afford it they should be allowed more than 4! This will allow some very good drivers stuck in the Xfinity series to move up.

Dale, KZbin recommended your channel to me which is why I watched this episode. I grew up watching you and your father in racing and was a huge fan. However, ever since NASCAR jumped into the PC pond, their decision to eliminate a traditional flag, and the pathetic Bubba Wallace incident regarding a fake noose that he knew was nothing more than a garage door rope; then watching all the teams being forced to parade down pit row as Drama Queen Baby Wallace cried on the hood of his car, I decided that I would never watch another NASCAR race again. I, and tens of thousands of other once loyal fans will not put up with these theatrics any longer. Now listening to what you and Denny were discussing and NASCAR's eagerness to throw a yellow in hopes for a dramatic finish even solidifies my reasoning to stay away from this phony pathetic organization. I truly hope that NASCAR fails as an organization so it may rejuvenate and come back as a more common sense sport again. My best to you and your family. Trace

The charter system needs to go away. It's a god awful system and it makes no sense. It reminds me of when the UFC started taxing the sponsors before they were allowed to sponsor the fighter. Reason why they did that was "we don't like some of the companies" and that was always such garbage. NASCAR justifies taking large sums of money so that you are "locked in" to the field. I don't see how that helps the problems of the sport and not finding enough people to race and want a team.
