this just has a much grittier, realistic, and (dare i say) scarier feel to it. I used to play KF1 with friends in school, and the first few times it gave me nightmares. But after recently playing KF2, i was kinda disappointed with the atmosphere and vibe of the game, despite how much fun it actually is.

KF1 was scary for like the 1st couple of games, then it's just more funny than anything else. I do prefer kf2 overall (movement, gunplay etc...) but kf1 will always have a special place in my heart.

Yeah kf1 was personally never scary to me, I simply played it for the coop pve experience, it’s challenging gameplay continues to keep the game interesting as players continue to learn many ways to overcome those challenges. It’s more of a RPG than it is a shooter.

Kf1 may lack some mechanics that kf2 has that some people would deem fun/necessary but kf1 the way it is is what makes it so great, unique and fun for many. Kf1 gameplay is much more serious due to its limitations and more or less “realistic” in a way as in a real situation with zombies, 1 mistake and 1 hit is going to get you killed obviously and kf1’s unforgivingness kind of provides this experience. Kf1 lacks sprint but not really as it provides a way to move slightly quicker with a knife/melee weapon which is more or less realistic and a BIG advantage that many newcomers often fail to learn how to utilize effectively, many will complain due to how games nowadays has standardized shift to run but games are supposed to be unique, following the trend is stupid and are mostly done to “baby” players who refuse to learn something new. Picture yourself running with a katana in real life, katanas don’t require you to really aim to attack which allows you to move more fluently/freely which makes sense to allow an advantage in movement, a gun will require some sort of aiming all the time for you to use it properly, aiming typically slows you down in a real life situation so it makes sense to be slowed down in movement while using a gun. Although kf2 can provide you with some fun playing with such mechanics, the game is merely less serious and made for fun. Nothing is wrong with that but if you want a more serious, unique and challenging game, kf1 is typically better in that.

Killing Floor 1 developers wanted to keep a certain theme to the game where the atmosphere is gritty dark. They openly said at the time they would avoid the pitfall of TF2 and having zany stuff going on everywhere breaking the mood. Skins were very carefully curated to blend with the atmosphere of the game. Even the more out there additions like the chicken suit was very strict in its design to keep with the theme of the game, levels and enemies. Usually only holiday events where they would allow things to go a bit off the rails. Also KF1 was during a time when developers put cool unlockables in games with no extra cost. Although in the years to come they would start adding DLC to the game. KF2 basically ignored all those restrictions to favor the zedconomy and get players to spend money on wacky skins etc. Even some levels getting added didn't really feel like KF at times. Kf2 I still think is a great game, but what happened to it is exactly what happened to TF2, the whole aesthetic basically became as wacky as TF2. I remember a few years ago wanting to jump back in and see how the game has progressed, only to see the most zany wacky skins and weapons skins on players kind not capturing the survival horror mood anymore. It was still fun to play, but if I jump back in KF1 today then it will look and feel like KF survival horror (minus wacky holiday times). Kf2 is just all over the place in that regards. Even though I enjoyed KF2 immensely, I miss KF1 more. Don't have friends that still play it and no servers in my country for both games anymore. If I want to play either of those I have to do it solo, which is okay but at my age, I'd rather then use that time to either play games with friends or more single player focused games if I'm playing alone. I still every few years boot KF1 or 2 up again and play a level or two. But honestly the tone and atmosphere of KF1 still holds up much better than the sequel. And thats for good reason, the developers at the time focused to keep it that way.

Not necessarily having the same QOL bs most games like kf2 have nowadays doesn’t make the game bad. In fact not having those stuff makes it a far more unique game and provides you with challenges you have to face and learn to overcome. Many players who refuse to get use to or adjust to different things tend to have a bad impression of such games but that is the players problem and not the game’s. If other players can learn to play kf1 effectively, anyone is able to aswell, some people just refuse to put in the time. Kf2 is catered towards casual players and although it’s enjoyable and fun to a certain degree, it falls short in providing the same challenging game play kf1 does which imo will provide a far more enjoyable experience in the long run.

@@MrClanTDS I agree with your points, but the movement/pace of the first game just feels very bad after spending a lot of time in KF2. That's the biggest issue i find when i go back. It's a drastic contrast, which is also partly why i do still boot it up from time to time :)

@@infntnub you probably just got use to the faster pace and liked it, I don’t mind either, not every game is the same and I certainly don’t put kf1 and kf2 in the same category despite their similarities, the overall gameplay is just different in general.

TL;DR: I prefer KF1 because KF1 is more readable, slow, strategic, and "slow-burn" tense. I can see my team get bored down upon by a horde, I can feel tension as they slowly overrun us, and I can learn from my mistakes to make better decisions to increase my chances of survival. By contrast, KF2's gameplay loop is very polished on the surface but feels unrefined, self contradictory, and just way too fast and messy when I put it under a microscope. KF1 is very overtly about smart decision making and teamwork, while KF2 has so much speed and mess in it that I can't find that old spark of those two factors like in the prior title. I can still enjoy the sequel, but it's hard for me not to gravitate back to the first game after I've had my fill. Honestly. I find that although KF2 has numerous quality of life improvements and a higher production value (especially with all the mocapped weapon details), I think that KF1 is the fundamentally better designed game. KF1's fundamental gameplay loop is designed to reward a team for holding down a spot on the map by finding a reasonably defendable position. Players must make a decision on where to hold out based on map geometry, proximity to zed spawns, possible angles of attack, and the hallways, bottlenecks, and doorways that can be used to their advantage. Then, they need to rotate the right combinations of players to watch the correct angles and occasionally swap to deal with big zeds or account for casualties in the middle of a wave. There are secondary options in the games sandbox to this loop, such as kiting, but they require a higher skillset, a well suited loadout and perk build, or both, and are usually used as plan B for when the team gets split and there's no other option. The best way to make the primary loop work is to maintain control of the situation by using the zeds predictable nature against them, and to aid certain perks like sharpshooter in pulling off takedowns by avoiding prematurely raging or manipulating the big zeds. KF2 fundamentally adopts this core gameplay loop because it's a sequel to the first game that adds many similar zed types, classes, and basic gameplay rules, but it adds way too much that goes against the grain. In KF1, the zeds are slow but numerous and threatening with unique threats. In KF2, these unique threats are often neutered in favor of a more generic movement speed and damage increase, especially with flashy parkour and karate moves. In KF1, clots were scary because multiple can surround you, grab you all at the same time, and pull you in separate directions and gore you very quickly. When this type of death comes my way, it happens due to a bad strategy or carelessness or a lack of awareness on my part, I see it happen just slowly enough that I can taste the horror, and it's a surprisingly thrilling and visceral experience. In KF2, clots are scary because an elite rioter clot can bitchslap me for like 20 damage and do the extreme karate reacharound pullover for 89 damage. I usually don't see it coming when I get hit by it and it doesn't impart the same tension because it hits too fast and is far too common. I never felt the fun "tension" and "horror" in KF2 that I felt playing KF1, and I only ever feel frustration and overstimulation when I bite the dust in KF2. However, the number one source of chaos in KF2 is ironically your teammates because of how the newer perks are designed compared to the older ones. In KF1, the only perk who can consistently cause a lot of harmful chaos via bad gameplay was firebug, but the thing is that firebug was designed so that the things he's really best at on a team are the most satisfying way to play the game. He can set the big zeds on fire, but doing so costs plenty of ammo and consistently gets a player killed, so the firebug will quickly learn not to. Meanwhile, he'll keep burning down common hordes because it's fun and effective for his team. By contrast, numerous perks in KF2 have gained playstyles and weapons that are fun to use and increase the chaos of a match, screwing your teammates over. Field Medic's medic gas makes zeds so sick that they flail, throwing off the headshots and parry timing of half his team, yet he's incentivized to constantly spam it from the HRG Healthrower as the most optimal way to heal his team. The Demolitions expert can outright knock over big zeds with his explosives, and it's the most satisfying way for him to play, and it'll throw off the parrying and headshots of all his teammates on that big zed. Most classes have a lot of knockdown or knock around or stumbles they can impart on a big zed without even thinking about it, and it really creates a hell of a lot of chaos. Heck, the elite variant spiders often get popped when killed and leak nasty gas all over the place, adding to the chaos. All of this means your teammates are designed to throw off your aim and planning at every turn, not only because they can do it, but because **it's the most rewarding way for them to play the game!** The thing is, it's impossible for me to find any of those orderly, team hold-out pubs in KF2 like I would find all the time in KF1 because the gameplay loop is so diluted with nonsense and crazy gimmicks and high speed zed karate action that you basically have to run and gun and adapt to anything or die in like half a second with very little warning. It's not an unfun experience either. It can be thrilling and fast paced, and it does promote some teamwork in some areas, but I can't find any of that strategy from the first game because the second game is just way too fast for it to be relevant, and run-and-gun is just way too strong. It feels like a Killing Floor and COD-zombies mashup and I can't follow it quite as well as KF1. That's not to say KF1 is perfect either; it has a lot of jank, and I think it can certainly benefit from a few of KF2's concepts (such as cross-perk weapon capability) and maybe a few novel ideas for minor quality of life tweaks (such as imparting a perk's weapon discounts to the entire team rather than just the one player using the one perk to make team-buying more simpler), but I think it's just hard to beat KF1's core design and adherence to that design without so much deviation or conflict with it's own mechanics.

As for why the Patriarch didn't die to all those pipe bombs, i believe Tripwire nerfed the pipe bombs so that players can't cheez the boss by placing all of them in one spot. If you put all the pipe bombs in one place and the boss runs over them, each pipe bomb deals less and less damage, for that reason there has to be a delay of around 1 second before getting hit by a pipe bomb again so that the other pipe bombs can deal their max potential damage but i could be wrong so don't take my word for it. Great video though :)

The game is balanced for no run being a more slower paced game, but with melee weapons allowing you to move slightly quicker is also seen as a great advantage that you need to learn to utilize effectively, it becomes a matter of “skill” learning to whip out your knife and learning how to survive with your knife or whipping out your gun when you need to when you’re on the run. No reload canceling teaches you ammo management so you don’t carelessly waste ammo like most inexperiences tend to do and die from a bad reload. Even then, there is still weapons that do allow some sort of reload canceling, specifically the weapons with single shot reloads like the normal shotgun, combat shotgun and lever action rifle etc, so if you want to be able to have some sort of reload cancel, it’s a given choice to use these weapons which can all have their advantages and disadvantages

Vanilla servers are more active than custom servers, it just seems not as active simply because there’s more vanilla servers than there is custom servers so players are split up into many vanilla servers

Despite the fact that KF2 has better gameplay mechanics, KF1 is far superior in terms of atmosphere and asthetic. Everything clicks in KF1 to create a much more cohesive vibe. KF2 gives something closer to a Fortnite vibe with players of questionable age running around in bright product-placement uniforms. Entirely cringe, but still fun and more relevant in 2023.

Bruh Don´t lie.. There is 0/6 almost 95 % of the servers for EU at 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. at HOE SUI HARD diff. And if some game finally comes out it´s full of low skilled players at highest diff who leave 1st wave after they die. It´s just completely dead, if you mind normal game how it is supposed to be. If you mind modded servers with some crazy 100+ levels and 50 + players capacity, well may it be some people there, but that really doesn´t fit for me as shooting one clot for 4 mags with 200 ping. ROFL.

Amusing. Most pve games today are vastly worse than KF1, packed with macro transaction bloat, broken features, unfixed day 1 exploits and devs that don't know what they are doing. And thats just KF2 lol If you want loony toons reloading play commando, the weakest class in the game because its balanced around killing stalkers. All unreal engine 2.5 games feel the same, thats the magic of unreal engine. The main reason KF2 is ASS to play is after a few hours you realize, enemies are just spawning outside your vision cone. Every time you turn around they spawn in your blind spot. the devs have flat out refused to fix this since BETA, they have even made long ranting posts insulting the player base over this. In KF1 the enemies spawn from outside the map and hunt you down. They will never spawn ontop of you. They never magically appear behind you. This is why KF1 stands the test of time. The games mechanics are fair to the players.

For some reason, I always found KF1 Easier than KF2, maybe it was because there were barely grabs, easy to hit and decapitate and also the many ways to abuse the AI Only thing I disliked was, Beserker didn't start with any longer range Melee and the Perk system for Support and Sharpshooter, since theirs took ages to farm.

Kf2 hoe I mastered in 50 hours, kf1 hoe I mastered in 2000 hours. Kf2 is easier imo simply because it’s more “refined”. Sure you can learn to abuse the AI in kf1 but it’s something you have to actually learn to do and even when you know how to do it, 1 little mistake and you’ll likely end up dead. in kf2, you don’t have to learn any of that or learn anything indepthly, just gotta know how to aim, shoot and run, nothing really interesting about that. Kf2’s difficulty is very forgiving compared to kf1 to the point where most kf2 players whos never played kf1 despite both games having some familiarities would extremely struggle in kf1 even at the lowest difficulties vs kf1 players could easily jump into kf2 just needing to familiarize theirself with the faster paced gameplay.

Most likely because you got skill issues with the first game. It’s normal to hate a harder game that requires more skills to play.

@@rangerjoe126 They aren't ever going to do that, because it requires not doing the fancy movement stuff that KF2 introduced. I'm being utterly serious, a big part of KF1's atmsophere came from the heavy, plodding approach you had to take to positioning and targets. Not only was the player slow and inertial, so were the enemies. It grounded the game in a way KF2 lacks, and created a more methodical, dire feel. EDIT: The way KF2 handles spawning is also problematic to atmosphere. I don't remember KF1 ever feeling like it was actively spawning enemies right behind you or specifially in directions you weren't looking. KF1's spawning felt logical in comparison to the way 2's was handled.

It’s something you have to look passed especially with games nowadays that has standardized those mechanics. If you learn to appreciate what kf1 has to offer, it can turn out to be more enjoyable, kf1 isn’t a brainless game like kf2 you can jump into and play and many people who don’t understand this can easily find kf1 not appealing. Kf1 requires true dedication, outside researching and etc to truly appreciate and understand it.

They gave up on the sequel hard. Nothing new other than stale same old stuff for gun nuts and those who just accept it the way it is. I want new characters (some to also to return like Ash and a human Rachel, etc.) , unique stuff back from the first, better maps and nostalgic items and weapons as a whole. I dunno. I gave up on this game after Saber decided to take over and tripwire gave this I.P. up oof
