Yep. Smash is a fighting competition, not a boxing competition. In the Punch Out games, the sport is boxing, so he sticks to those rules. However, Smash is just all or nothing, people using guns and pulling out rocks. That being said, Mac is fully allowed and permitted to use those moves.

So that's why you wack a person with charged "b" they go flying. It's an homage to his game. When struck with the "K.O." attack, the opponent actually is raised from the floor and if that's knock out hit [this is true to for the Star Punch as well], the opponent would fly off his feet across the ring and the chances of them getting up is lowered (or assured if you know the proper procedure). Also in Boxing if you manage to knock you opponent out the ring it's an automatic "T.K.O." This the reason to why the unlucky ones receiving the "K.O." punch is sent off soaring to the blast zone in Smash 'cause that's how you win.

Not to mention that his Dash attack can be classified as a 'rabbit punch', which is a dangerous (thus illegal) move. Rabbit punches are ones to the top of the head or the base of the neck, which can cause spinal injury.

His "Star Punch" may just be either an uppercut or an homage to his game. He is literally the shortest person in both (or three not sure if Super was the same protagonist) his games. And to hit them in the chin he had to jump. He lunches up in the same fashion as his game counterpart. And a lot of the stars that can be obtained is located by hitting the chin.

Lastly there's his K.O. punch, which is a powered up version of his hook (yes the Super version count head punches as hooks). It was there in the original NES game; but wasn't named as such until the Super NES version. The animation is the same [roughly] between those games. This may also be why there's two "modes" for the attack. In the NES, you used one star for every "K.O." punch [named Star Punches]; but in Super you had to build up your meter to use it. Losing it as soon as you are hit. The initial "B" attack have him charge up and in certain times you can't knock him out of it (which may be an allusion to how counters worked in Punch-out ); secondly his charged "B" is just a button press.

Nice video, but to let you know that Boxing isn't just a sport--it's a philosophy as well. And regarding the "backhand" Lil Mac does, the flash is on the knuckle of the glove indincating that's the intended area of contact. That's how Pac "got away with it". Mike Tyson did really low ducks and I think Mac's duck animation may be inspired (or taken) from those days.

In smash bros, yes he breaks the rules quite badly, in the actual punchout games? Maybe once or twice, the opponents break them more, including taking a literal friggin manhole cover to guard with, putting horseshoes in his gloves, making a makshift mace out of torn gloves and rope, (this technically isn’t breaking a rule of boxing but dammit I’m counting it) and using a helicopter indoors. Mac was optimized for smash so that he can stand a chance. He doesn’t follow boxing rules in smash at all. But in punchout, he’s a saint.

Just going to point out, Smash is not Boxing. Even though Little Mac is a boxer, the same rules as a boxing match do not apply to Smash. If they did, then every other character who doesn't use boxing at all would be breaking the rules even harder than Little Mac. If Mac broke any of these rules in Punch-Out!! then it's a different story, since Punch-Out!! is actually a boxing game.

Actually, for one, K.O is the proper spelling. For two, Smash Bros. calls it the K.O Punch. And for three, the Star Punch and K.O Punch are two things. The K.O Punch, is a hard blow to the jaw, while the Star Punch is Little Mac ducking down to the opponent's gut, popping up WHILE spinning, and the a punch to the jaw.
