Does Preen work? Weed free mulch beds after 1 season.

In this video I go over how my mulch beds are holding up after a season of using Preen as a weed preventer. I show some different areas that had Preen applied as well as other areas that did not so you can see how much of an effect it has had. I had applied the Preen around late March and these are the results 5 months later in November. I would definitely recommend using this in your mulch beds to cut down on the weeds if you have the chance. Below is a link to the Preen that was used in this video. How long after an application of Preen can I plant again in my vegetable garden?

Preen creates a barrier in the soil to prevent weed seed growth and lasts for up to 3 months. Though if you were to disturb the soil then it will break down sooner. So if you applied it and are now wanting to plant from seed you would need to break up the soil or possibly add a little potting soil for your seed to sprout then reapply the preen after the plants roots have established.

But Preen doesn’t stop grass pop up does it?

Preen is a pre-emergent, which means that it will stop new grass from growing if you were to plant grass seed after putting down preen. In my video I show that the grass is slowly growing into the mulch beds in a few areas. This is because Kentucky blue grass spreads through its roots, and since the grass was already established nearby it just spread in those areas a bit. This is why a lot of people may use some form of a protective border along their mulch beds, to keep the grass from spreading into it.

Yes I put down a layer of preen first and then the mulch. This year I will add another layer of preen and then a light layer of mulch on top to freshen the color.

......is ok to use Preen in May 7th ?? ......lots of Weeds on whole property..... .....the lawn ....right now Dandolions... What's the right Preen ?? Thnks

Preen is a weed preventer and works great in flower beds to keep weeds from growing. If you already have weeds you’ll want to spray a weed killer in your lawn that won’t harm the existing grass. Any weed killer with 2-4D or dicamba will kill the dandelions.

It shouldn’t kill established plants, though it will keep new plants from growing from seed. I spread it around my hostas but I do use a leave blower to blow it off the leaves before watering it in. I just try to not apply it directly on any plants pants but around them all and haven’t had any die from it. The label should also specify the directions on how to apply and what to avoid.
