If you've ever wondered the answer to this question just take a look at AP's career. All day. Bike time translates, it wont give you every skill you need but it 100 percent will help you, moto in a lot of ways is easier, just more consequence because of the speed. Talk to someone who can coach and youll be flyin around a track before you know it.

Woods riding, especially in New England definitely helps you balance, body positioning, maintaining traction and momentum, but it doesn’t help you with speed. MX rewards the aggressive rider whereas throttle control, balancing between a graceful pace and aggressive riding - when the terrain allows for it - is the key to off road success. Look at all the A class woods riders WHEN they are in the woods. They are smooth like silk, they are not aggressive on the throttle until they’re in grass section. This style of riding doesn’t work for winning a MX race unless the track is under water, even then it might not be enough to win. Time spent riding the bike is always the best teacher. You need to be comfortable on the bike, in all different kinds of terrain. It’ll make you better rider. Maybe not faster, but definitely better.

I'd say open, flowing trails sure. But in insanely tight and technical terrain, probably not. Gncc guys moto a ton and it carries over very well. The hard enduro guys are often going 5-10mph, dabbing their feet through rocks, have their legs wide open and nuts on the tank and back rounded to balance and get traction up a steep hill, etc. Also pivoting around trees requires a lot of back brake through the day. Not all woods riding is created equal. It took me several years of working on mx technique to at least look like I can ride decent lol my first 20+ years riding were in creek beds and on the side of cliffs. Lot different!

But the basic techniques are the same, basically the new gen moto guys are copying the hard enduro (from trials) crowd. So it won't teach you ruts and jumps, but the stand up style, knees over pegs, bent arms, lead with the head etc... gets you the fundamentals at least. And the cross country guys introduce the hybrid sitting technique for energy saving. So at least it gets good habits going for the track.

Balance and body position are key in enduro and they’re key in moto. It translates. Even trials there are skills that translate to moto.
