Starcraft 1 was my favourite game of all time being given it as a child as my first blizzard game, I went straight to the Protoss campaign in vanilla as I was drawn to the Protoss. then I had to wait 2 months till chistmas from my birthday to get broodwar and finish off the story. I had an obsession with playing the campaigns many times over and did the same in WC3. I remember in my childhood memories I was so impressed with the graphics and the uniqueness of the zerg and the Protoss that this is hard to describe but when I saw one of my friends playing the game its like it seemed more alien and colourful than it actually was its like my childhood memory/conscious awareness is sort of like an acid trip embellishing something that it had never seen before. Like I can remember my friend had a bunch of mutas and he morphed them into Devourers and Guardians at the same time and attacked another Zerg and my mind was just blown at what I was seeing.

Yeah I was the same. Used to play it at my cousins every time we would go visit. I loved the way siege tanks deployed. And I vividly remember the one cutscene where marines get ambushed by hydras.

Definitely a biased comment as I grew up with Broodwar, but the one thing that I kinda missed as I played through SC2 was the sound design because of how it stood out. In broodwar, you can kinda tell even if you have your eyes closed what's happening on your screen whenever a battle takes place. Whether that's a siege tank deploying, a reaver scarab exploding, or a lurker attacking. The same applies still in SC2, but it feels like they were toned down a bit. The stim sound effect is kinda like a whoosh now instead of that PSHH-AAA sound effect in broodwar, and the blink sound for the stalker is more quiet, but it's definitely there. Don't get me wrong, both games are fun, but there's just something about the sound effects of broodwar. The soundtrack, however, on both games, is still amazing. I may be a Zerg main, but the terran music is just great to listen on both games.

even the sounds in the menu... i dunno what it is, but that sound of your courser hover over a menu item is sooooo satisfying. it just shows how much polish the game had imo. attention to detail in every aspect

forget the music...the story and dialogue was miles better too lol. Insane vocabulary to learn off a video game and i really like the betrayals, uneasy alliances and evolution of everyone's arc. Notice how in sc2, we didn't get to play as the "bad guys" at all aside from maybe alarak, but honestly he didn't really have any history for us to "hate" him or something.

Blizzard was on a level of their own back then. In only 6 years they gave us SC Broodwar, Diablo 2, WC3 and WoW.

Overall SC community was happy about shape of the remaster and people use newer graphics. Some misses are there but overall it's fine work. Funnly enough same studio was doing SC remaster and WarCraft 3: Reforged. Apparently when you give studio enough time it can do good job about it and graphical direction is still on the Blizzard at the end of the day, it's not like they are studio that can't just show what they want.

Still to this day the most influential and well balanced RTS of all time. Still being played at a high level every season of every year, with a constantly growing meta, and new tricks still being figured out. How Blizzard of old managed to pop out both Warcraft and Starcraft the way they did, I will never be able to fully wrap my head around. A legendary era I will always remember fondly, and do my best to share with others in the years ahead. Both games still going strong!

Tell you what man, original graphics hold up exceedingly well. Everything is still easily identifiable at a glance, the only real advantage of HD is the wider aspect ratio. Kinda wish that applied to OG graphics Carbot skin is fun too, they did great work

I had exactly same feeling about the original graphics and then I switched to a Remastered for a few seconds and Remastered is just better. I love the thing they re-created same sprites for Starcraft 1, without any changes to the units :) Everything looks the same but it's HD and I love that. They only messed up with portraits and gave Protoss that fancy dranei look from SC2 instead of how they looked like in original. But it's ok. It's still an amazing Remaster from a dead corpse that was a Blizzard long time ago.

watching the intro cinematics and the exchange between zeratul/aldaris was very sobering there is a beauty to this era of games as with any era where social commentary is inevitably made through the art of story telling. Its so strange and dysphoric, that the company capable of making such engaging story telling can succumb to. Even in sc2 there is less nuance to the story. Every scene raynor is in feels tired like him, but also as if its putting on airs. in classic he is so earnest, as is the writing. it's genuinely so sad to see what has wasted of the narrative potential blizzard games had, under capitalist oriented management.

Is it me or in SC1 Artanis is a Dark Templar with his Khala already being separated?? Because I don`t see it continuing in cinematics and portrait.

Korean scene still has A LOT of big tournaments and leagues, basically daily. Chinese scene also pretty big with great prizepools. Western scene still decent in size with sponsored tournaments of medium size 3-5 times a year ;)

Starfract 1 is the greatest game ever made. The remaster is nice for a modern player, but nothing will ever beat the original. Amazing campaign, amazing pvp. amazing UMS community. Its a shame it didn't get the traction in the states it deserved.

I really really hope Stormgate can get anywhere close to the base quality of SC1. Obviously balance and so on was all over the place back then, but just the little details etc..

I agree that the original portraits look better. Also agree that original Ultralisks were cool. Actually, they WERE overpowered against Terran -- you had to be like Boxer to be able to defeat those things if the Zerg managed to get a 12-pack of them on a ground map. But they did sound better -- the StarCraft 2 Ultralisks sound like they are swinging some kind of flimsy knives. (Same problem with Dark Templar attack, although I have to admit that the StarCraft 2 Dark Templar voice lines are pretty cool.) And the StarCraft 1 music (especially Protoss) sounded better.

Wc3 came before SC2. Grubby played SC2 competitively for a while as well.

Protoss was Overpowered with shields which my friends played, and I was forced to play Zerg even tho I loved protoss..which lead me into being a UD player in W3....never been a fan of human race in ANY game...even Diablo I was sorcerer for necromancer instead of paladin or barbarian...human race never has intrigued me....I did start off as Orc I'm w3 as they were similar to protoss but ultimately I always choose.the dark side

Wonder what the analytics for this one look like. I'd watch you play the campaign or do showmatches. I'd even watch you play vs AI. Good to see. I miss starcraft 2 also.. Hopefully the new snow Giant or whatever game will be a reason to dump blizzard completely.

SC1 Had a much darker tone than SC2, which I much prefer. I think SC2 is a better competitive game though. That being said, I really wish they had the darkness from SC1 in SC2 as well, the design from the first game is so much more tasteful in my opinion. Say what you want about the gross buildings of zerg, but imo it really fit the aesthetic. SC1 is like a thriller while SC2 is an action movie

You should check UED: First Light mod for SC2 if you were missing that darker tone, in both graphics and story narrative. Prequel campaign and real quality work with professional voice acting. Creators just nailed the atmosphere of original SC in it.
