Does She Hate ABA Therapy? | Fighting Over Decor

Does she hate ABA therapy? Does she not like her therapist? Is it the routine or location? We made some ABA therapy changes but it worked. I miss my always happy little girl but she's growing up. Priscilla and I spent the morning on a nice little day date fighting over decor. We took a wing back chair to Abbie's school for her because... you know... autism. Sometimes I just want to shrug my shoulders and say, "this is autism."

I love ABA good therapy!! It save my life. I was nonverbal til 3rd grade and it helped for stopping the frustration and worked on talking through the therapy. As you said the data that my therapist kept showed exactly everything that she needed for all the therapy I did back then to get the verbal communication success. With out the data and tasks my Aba therapy I wouldn’t probably be as verbal as I am now. Mom actually jokes with it now is she worked so hard to hear my voice and become moderate challenge with autism not quite mild due to I still stim and have routine structure needs and nonverbal communication struggles and eye contact challenges and my favorite topic to talk about obviously but I’m talking and she can shut me up now! Lol 😂 we have a inside joke that says I’m just making up for the time I could talk and communicate lol

Im not sure how to word my question and i know this was 2yrs ago 🤣 but looking back on when you were nonverbal, what did it feel like? Did you simply not have the urge to talk because you couldn't, or did your body really want to talk but it just couldnt make the connections? Sorry if that doesnt make sense. Loved this video. We have two kids with autism and do ABA and it is really nice to hear these kinds of discussions, thank you for sharing! My son is 14 and has mod/severe autism. Leisure skills have been a huge focus for years. We are trying to get to the point where we can make him block schedules in free time (like a 2 or 3 hour schedule on a Saturday afternoon) so he stays active and isn't just doing things that frustrate him and lead to behaviors (we have a lot of SIBs and property destruction). It's been so so hard to find things he likes and can do without support. Sensory activites top the list...water beads, play doh (he actually really loves the clay that doesn't dry out), moon sand/kinetic sand, putty, wikki stix, etc. A few months ago we got this magnet drawing board thing off Amazon that he LOVES LOVES LOVES, you might check into it for Abbie. It's called Xcivi Free Play Magnatab Magnetic Drawing Board Magnetic PAD(It's red with a yellow pen). It makes these clicking sounds when the magnetic balls come up and then when you want them to go away you have to push all of the little magnets back down. Lots of sensory input. My son is kind of into wild animals right now so we've been thinking of making some kind of habitat scenes where he can put magnetic or velcro animals into the scenes. Melissa and Doug have a bunch of reusable sticker pads with habitats, rooms of the house, faces, etc, that I'm checking to see if he might enjoy. We've tried basic legos like teaching him how to make a house or a car but he didn't like that. He also really likes mazes and marble runs and we've had some luck with those kinds of activities for him. Finally, we're trying to get him interested in a few games on a tablet and he seems to like the apps where you make food (especially frozen treats like popsicles or snow cones) and at this very moment he's building a maze on minecraft. I'm having to go in a lot to help him, he's getting frustrated not knowing how to navigate it, but he's learning and I think it might be a win. My son is also obsessed with numbers and he loves to spend time on his calculator and with a dry erase board. This does lead to behaviors though and so that's one of the things we're trying to give him other options for. I agree that puberty makes a huge difference in daily life, for both of our kids. Our other child with autism is 10 years old and a girl so we're hitting all that now too. Fun times! We'll all get through on the other side though. You guys are doing a great job taking data to figure out the function of the gagging - interesting that it seems to be from boredom! Oh one more thing (sorry! LOL) we have also been teaching him some of the excercises from the Coach Dave book...it's a fitness book for autism. He seems to really like these and they help with sensory input. We got him a 20 lb slam ball to use as well. I think exercise is going to be really important to help him regulate his moods and it's an "appropriate" option for heavy sensory input as he gets older. ~Tamie

I am so happy to see Abbie happy again. It is relieving. I think, I already told you, that I like her and feel with her. I remember that I said that ABA although she might like it, is hard work which is really making tired. Personally, I have no experience with ABA on my own because I am not diagnosed, but know that I am on the spectrum. And yes, I agree with you, I wouldn’t benefit very much from that form of Therapy, but maybe it would make me conscious of some backgrounds why I’m doing some things and why IM feeling what. Maybe I could learn to differentiate between my feelings etc. But I dont know if I could do ABA in Germany anyway, because you need an ASD Diagnosis. To go to social service and fill in formula to askthem to pay the costs of Autism Therapies anyway.But before trying a new diagnosing session I should finish my trauma therapy. Because I have PTSD the psychiatrist was afraid to say that I’m on the spectrum although there were many signs for it being existent. Maybe she likes the feeling that there is something in her throat when she gags. My brother gagged me when I was a child. It felt as if there was a kind of bone in my throat. For me that was frightening. But maybe for her its different.Another theory that came to my mind that gagging helps her to get some muscles in her front of the neck a bit loos and less hard. I told you already, that I put a scarf on when I want to relax my neck muscles and that scarf is quite tight, but not gagging me.☺️ oh, and if I made you stay in writing, I wrote blind and didn’t dictate like this sentence. And it is quite difficult to use the English keyboard. So you can keep my mistakes and I don’t know put them in the box.Except rocking an listening music, does she lik strong embraces or does she things that need a certain amount of power or wriggling up? If s it might be helpful to find alternatives to gagging. Unfortortunately I have no suggestion for you. Hmmm... Maybe biting really hard on a chewy product or using a accupressure ball she could fiddle with? But this is not the same as gagging. I sometimes need stims that kind of hurt of getting rid of inner pain or high voltage. And from the outside it looks as if I was relaxed. If you want to talk about that and have some Ideas from very far away outside, you can mail me. I dont know if my Email is visible for you. If not, please tell me yours in that answer and I will write you back. But please keep in mind that I am German and some words I have to research and I’m not diagnosed. I just can try to empathize in Abbie which are assumptions and get you some ideas or input/feedback.

My leisure skills are art, computer games, watching KZbin videos and listening to music. I'm in a wheelchair so I'm limited on what I can do. When I'm playing computer games I lose myself in the game, and all my problems just fade away. I love doing art, I'm stuck at home so it keeps me busy, at the moment I need a little help with the fiddly bits and lifting stuff on and off of my craft shelves. My counsellor also encourages me to draw how I feel to help express myself and emotions. I always watch videos on KZbin before I go to sleep as it helps me wind down. I also spend a lot of time cuddling the cat to calm down, she hears all my problems and will always come over to me when I'm struggling and every morning at 8am she comes in to my room and we have cuddles in bed, if I'm upset she always makes everything feel ok again.

Trying to get "caught up" AGAIN! The flu has hit our family and decided to stick around for a while...whew, not pleasant! Good info what y'all were saying about the graphs. Our grandson has ABA 2X per week ...speech 1x per week. He talks, but doesn't really converse, so there's still a lack of communication. His last 2 ABA sessions....he behaved differently and not in a good way....included hitting his therapist. Maybe just in a bad mood....but we were all contemplating what could have precipitated the acting out. I'm going to pass on the info about the graphs to my daughter to see if his therapist keeps that type of data. I could think of many things that could actually be helpful with. This is just another example of why your channel and activism is Soo helpful! Love the RV park....we have a 5th wheel and love to camp, as well....it's been a while, but seeing that campground makes me want to go. 😘

I can understand in someways why people disapprove of ABA but when it's done correctly and for the right purpose like we your case. I think it can be really effective. I love videos where we see Abbie doing ABA. My 3 year old ASD/SPD Daughter has ABA and I’m always so shocked at the things she can learn to do. It’s pretty awesome! She’s also technically Non-Verbal because she only speaks using echolalia and singing songs. Not much meaningful/functional/independent speech. Really hoping ABA will help her learn to tell us what she needs and wants.

When I met him, he had Oilers (our hockey team) flags TAPED onto the walls willy nilly. I love decorating and shopping so I'm quite happy that all of it is up to me! I am very close to A young couple (in their 30's) both with different forms of Autism. They both come from loving homes and have grown up together in school and church. The young man is about 90%non verbal, he's able to drive, he works at the church cleaning and repairing things. His mind is brilliant, he can sit down at a computer and recap an entire Texas Rangers or Dallas Cowboys Game, but yet cannot verbalize it. His girlfriend (Tobi) tries extremely hard to communicate which to me she just talks a bit slower, but again her mind is not as advanced as Justin, her boyfriend. They do have their "things", rituals which are actually VERY repetitive. Every Sunday they attend Church, Go out to Eat and to the movie theater. On Wednesday nights she likes to be part of the church choir (although she might night be an amazing singer, she is happy as can be) and then attend evening church followed by going out to dinner. So they each have their own strengths and I believe that because their parents are so supportive in helping them grow at their pace like y'all do with Abigail, it allows them to make choices. They love to take trips and Justin loves photography, whenever he takes a picture he immediately says "Two". He just always takes 2 pictures and since he cannot verbalize well he can post the pics on Facebook and give a full description. They are adorable and always want to put others before themselves....just too darn sweet! It's funny because they ALWAYS eat at the same places and get their picture taken EVERYWHERE they go :) What does the future hold for Justin and Tobi? who knows as long as they are happy! I've written before about a young girl I used to nanny for. She was not Autistic but no kidding she is soooo much like Abigail. She stopped breathing (SIDS) when she was 6 months. She was raised by a very young single mom and affluent Grandparents. They were so selfish, it broke my heart. They said they could keep her in that "state" as long as they wanted. She never had Therapy, Schooling, Peer Interaction and lacked so many life skills. When I had her at age 15 she began puberty. She was enrolled in School, Equine Therapy, Speech Therapy, Congnitive Skills Therapy. My short 18 months with her was so amazing and rewarding! This is where I see that she reminds me of Abigail. She began expressing herself, teaching her hygiene, dressing, using her arms more that were starting to atrophy. I thought what a loss of 15 Years of this young girls life....she came soooo far in 18 months imagine what 15 years prior without that stimulation of just a Television... it broke my heart! Her mom ended up moving and decided that it was best I didn't keep in touch :( This was 11 years ago....she would be 21/22 now. #sad

Some people have tics. My sister used to twist her hair around her fingers and pull out her hair. Like Abbie she did it while sitting around or whenever she was bored. A psychiatrist told my parents to make her aware she was doing it. After a while she stopped pulling out her hair. I am lying. She is her 50's and whenever she's stressed I occasionally see her reaching for her hair.

On the verbal, high IQ end of the spectrum the male to female ratio is actually more extreme, like 11:1 but it's thought that at least part of that is that girls with less visible autism tend to go undiagnosed or be diagnosed with mental health conditions like mood disorders and anxiety disorders instead.

Have you ever tried an activity schedule with Abbie? We used to have a photo album with pictures of games and other fun activities for our daughter to complete. We called it her leisure activity schedule. We started out with just 2 activities. Sometimes we required her to do them and sometimes we let her choose which ones she wanted to do.

You may want to see if a Recreational Therapist would be a good choice for Abbie. A Recreational Therapist could work with Abbie to find leisure activities that would be healthy for her. Rec Therapists are trained to work with all populations so they will have insights for you and Abbie.

My son is verbal, but it is still in progress he doesn't talk like everyone else. He didn't talk until he was ready. I used ABA on my own, to get my son to talk. He didn't go to an ABA school. I think people have this idea that it is still being used like it was in it's infancy stage which was pretty bad. It's not used that way anymore. I think you guys are doing awesome. I am by no means super educated in this area but I will tell you what I have seen work. I work with special needs kids daily and we work on that relaxation time too. For the kids who have trouble with it, and they are all autistic, we almost give them a break from the break. So we have this sensory room and the kids go in there and lay on mats, pillows, etc. we have these charts we use for behavior and we tell them when they get 5 thumbs up for doing well in sensory, basically relaxing and staying calm, they get to do something they want - for them that is using the computer and stimming. Maybe for Abbie that could be listening to music. I don’t know I hope this helps but if not I’m sure you will find something that will.

More of a general question, not specifically about Abbie -- is it possible/diagnosable for people with non-verbal autism to have depression or other mental health disorders? Or is the emotional struggles more a part of having autism?

Meredith Enright I am pretty sure that they can have other mental disorders, although I am a high functioning autistique, I also have ADHD and I other neurological problems 😉

Yes, autistic people can suffer from mental illness just like neurotypical people. The symptoms may be different and it may be harder to diagnose, especially if it's a non-verbal person, but yes, autistic people can (and do) suffer from mental illness as well. My brother lives in a group home for young autistic adults and some of the young adults living there struggle with mental illness, in addition to their autism. Depression, anxiety and OCD seem to be the most common (just speaking from my subjective impression here!), but there's also a girl who has bulimia.

On a pretty day, like when the weather is nice, she could take ol Maverick on a walk. On days when walks aren't possible or whenever you need to fill time between tasks/everyday stuff someone could read to her? Idk how her attention span would work with being read to. She could do art stuff? Just coloring or something. Maybe when she's just sitting on the couch chilling you could give her something to have in her hands to mess with. Like a squish ball or something just to keep her hands preoccupied.

This real time talk is making me emotional. Low engagement as the antecedent of gagging is heart breaking. But y'all are handling it well as parents! 💙 As a teacher, we have a block of time to work on leisure skills. After baseline data, the targets can start as low as 5 seconds to work on a skill (puzzle, coloring, watching videos, drawing, worksheets). It took a little while, but my students are gradually getting to higher times (10.minutes on puzzles, 3 minutes coloring). We treat it like a program, so when it's complete they are reinforced with whatever they were "working" for. To each their own though. We also use Catalyst!!
