Does size really matter not? Comparing 32" to 36" lightsaber blades

Just a brief comparison and demonstration of two Vader's Vault dual diffused lightsaber blades.

Even if someone is over 6 feet tall it doesn’t matter if they duel with a 32” because they would have longer arms (I’m 6’5 so I have long arms)

It makes sense that arm/blade would even out for you. I had the impression that proportion to height was the goal for selecting blade size. Otherwise one might feel they were wielding a spear or a knife, depending.

I’m 6’1 but my wingspan is about 6’3 so I feel more comfortable with a 32 because with a 36 it tends to hit the ground a lot

i think basically just go by the movies and star wars lore, if you're short 32, if you're 6 feet or more than 36 or if you're duel wielding or like ahsoka then 32 or 34 or 28.

You have to consider how much of the blade slots into the saber to secure it, roughly 1.5 - 2 inches. So I go 34 and/or 36 depending on the hilt. Best having two sized blades.

I used to prefer 32” blades until I got into historically-accurate Han dynasty swords (hint: it’s not the shape you find everywhere these days with the rounded handle currently mass-produced). Now, I prefer 34-36” blades with the balance point roughly 4-5 inches from the emitter. It pairs really well with Wudang style swordsmanship movements and requires more flowing movement to be “one with the sword”.

I just got Ashoka’s lightsabers from ultrasabers. I find the shorter hilt with the 36” blade it came with too long. I’m ordering a 28” or 32” soon.

So I really have no idea what soce would be good for me I know im 1,72 M "tall" from hand to the other hand its like 1,80M diagonal so if someone know if it makes a huge differenz pls let me know if not I might buy a "lamp" lightsaber with the 36 and an aditional 32 ich and then after using it a bit a neopixel... On a custom foam blade I made the handle is 14" inches and the blade is 34" inches. not sure if I should cut the handle or the blade. a since when I swing it, it tends to scrape the ground, me being 5'7 arises the question.

A "standard" hilt length is about 12 inches, more or less. Stunt sabers may be shorter. Consider your swing trajectory & position of your hands/height of your arms from the ground to see if adjustments are possible. Better to trim too little than too much!

If you're comfortable keeping in closer measure to your opponents, 32" might work while giving some freedom to flourish. But 36"-37" would also be fine if you're comfortable moving in with quick thrusting swings and cuts.

I would suggest 32. Might give a slight speed advantage to get your blade around theirs for feints, especially since you'll need to keep in closer measure to reach them.

If it's good for Jedi younglings (clone wars episode), I say it's good. The weight of the wood should also beef up your arms, too. Unless it's like a ratan (bamboo sort of stick) which are lighter. Regardless, train with what you've got!

I'm not familiar with Sabertrio's blades, but I imagine you could work with either blade size. It's all about your fighting style, what feels comfortable, and what you have most success with. Shorter blade means you're in closer quarters and those who tend to withdraw their elbows in won't have much attack reach with 32.

Size does matter... In all my years of saber wielding, I've collected and tried a slew of sabers of different makes and lengths. The sizes I PREFER are 28-32 inch max. Thought I do own at least 3 full sized sabers, I find the shorter blades are easier to balance and control. The first thing that I do to a saber when I get one is to check the FULCRUM. THIS is the balance point of the saber's mass. I find that a balance point across one finger, just behind the emitter, about an inch to 1.25 is optimal for me. I make that natural balance point at that location because this is where my index finger only sword hand goes for a sure grip and greater control when twirling, transitioning through attack patterns & trajectories, and shifting stances. Having it there at the "sweet spot" lends to its gyroscopic fluidity. I'll use steel cable or open "O" rings to give it the extra weight from the hilt down along the handgrip. I'll make a vid that goes into more detail soon on why this is essential. But, back to the LENGTH... Not only does a shorter saber give you better control, but you have the distinct advantage in a close combat situation where there are walls and other obstacles that may hamper possible attack and defense maneuvers. With shorter blade, you have faster speed. If you understand the nature of centrifugal force in terms of distance from the axis -- radius, that the shorter the radius, the faster the object goes that revolves about it with the equivalent energy input. Think of the Ice skater who spins with he arms out... When she pulls them in towards her body, the law of conservation of energy (torque) kicks in and she begins to spin FASTER. Another advantage is that, though you be somewhat limited in reach, it is easier to get in and under your opponent's defenses and deal with he or she up close and personally! THAT'S the whole magic for me. There is a small circle within the wielder's "personal space" that extends from his body to about a circumference that I call the "extremity zone" ---- that concentric area wherein your arms work your saber. With a shorter blade penetrating this area or you standing within it will through your opponent off balance! They will have to fall back to gain ground to maneuver properly. This is a go for the kill moment that I NEVER miss!

Understanding the weapon, specifically the physics that define its functionality, is KEY to "feeling" --- connecting with the weapon... i prefer the 36 due to my slight background in fencing, longer blade puts more distance between you and an opponent, so i go for form 2 style combat

Indeed, if you have a strong arm, then the extra inches doesn't make much weight difference. Some might prefer 32" for better reflexes. Others would simply strengthen their arms.

The most important thing is do what feels comfortable. We are about the same height and I can spin with longer blades, but shorter allows for slightly quicker tricks. Also depends on how you hold your saber & how long the hilt is. If you hold by the pommel, make sure you have spin clearance. If you hold by the emitter, you have more blade room.

32" should serve you well. Not so long that you're clattering into things but still well-sized to have some dueling fun. Some sell day-blades which are useful in outdoor settings, unless you're using the newer LED string blades.

Try 32" for each side to start. But think also about the hilt size. Smaller hilts would allow larger blades, but longer hilts might require normal or shorter blades. Or being taller than average might make that irrelevant. Feel free to experiment to find what gives you good reach, but still has clearance to not strike the ground and also doesn't feel too clumsy. I'd agree, but I'm happy with the brightness on the 36. When it's fully charged, it's definitely leaves a glare in your eyes when you look away (from the lit blade, not the LED itself. That would be dumb.)

32 would probably suit you just fine! I don't have much opinion on traditional in-hilt lights or pixel type blades. I don't know if the pixel blades can handle much beating, but maybe if there's a heavy grade, perhaps. It would be better for cosplay and such, but for dueling and such, you may want to consider in-hilt lights. But who knows, maybe that's out of date by now. I'm not really in the saber scene much at as much as others. Sorry I'm not much help!

First check which diamater it accepts. Clone Wars sabers should be normal 1 in diameter, but fulcrum sabers which may be thinner depending on the manufacturer are built for thinner, 7/8 in diamater. To be authentic either case, you'll want probably the 32 in for one and 24 in (shoto size) for the other. Both white for fulcrum, but green for 32 & lime green for 24 for clone wars, or blue for season 7 clone wars. Arctic blue is my preference, but some prefer regular blue.

Thanks for your question! I apologize for not being versed in metrics, but I know Vader was 2 meters, so I can guess you're pretty tall. You might enjoy 36". It would allow you to keep better distance. But 32" would be quicker, allow you to operate closer to yohr opponent, and use it forms more precise movements like from II, Makashi.

Again, it might be subjective to your fighting style. 36" would probably be fine, but some taller people might like an extra long blade like 40" if they have a large hilt to support it. It would be a lot of weight and intimidation, but not good for close quarters. Or maybe you're still fast and quick, so having 36" or even 32" could be blindingly fast. It's all subjective.

Yes, VV is the high end! There are other companies like Ultrasabers, Saberforge and others, depending on what you're looking for. Some have enough money to buy less combat-worthy "shelf queens" for display, some are looking only for a flashlight stick for hard, competitive fencing or schooling, some want a balanced saber to look nice and be confortable/useful for fencing.

I'm 5'10", and 37" blade is way too long. Plus if you have short ceilings, the smaller the better. Even with a 32", I can accidentally hit low ceilings

I realized how small it was when I did my first lightsaber form demo video. But it has it's usefulness still. Might be more practical for saberstaff/double-blades weapons than long 36".
