People get really defensive about talent when it comes to creativity or intelligence, and I can understand why because it feels very limiting. I always find relating it to physical endeavors makes the most sense. When I watch the NBA there are players who are 7 feet tall and who jump 40 inches high, and there are also players who will never be either of those things who are still playing because they worked hard or honed specific desirable skills. Now imagine that there are people out there with the brain equivalent of being 7 feet tall with a 40 inch vertical leap. I’ll never be that but I can still find a way to be valuable and participate. And that’s why I play bass haha!

Merci pour cette nouvelle vidéo exceptionnelle. Je pense que vous avez 100 % raison sur la question inné/acquis ! Vous ne vous contentez pas de discourir sur le sujet comme beaucoup mais avez mené votre propre expérience jusqu'au bout, avec des résultats validés par Biréli Lagrène et Sylvain Luc... il n'y a pas de meilleure validation possible. Votre analogie des portes est vraiment excellente. Donc le problème, pour les 99,9 % qui ne sont pas comme Lagrène et Luc, c'est de trouver ce qui les aidera à trouver la bonne porte. Votre bouquin que j'ai parcouru en entier va dans ce sens. Il parle d'un des vrais fondamentaux. Pour moi la technique de main droite était vraiment un problème et je l'ai réglé avec les vidéos de Troy Grady . Paradoxe très intéressant : il montre par A+B (y compris des études scientifiques) que physiologiquement absolument TOUT LE MONDE est capable de tempos d'au moins 200 bpm. Mais il dit aussi qu'il faut un talent phénoménal pour faire cette découverte par soi-même. Après il faut encore l'appliquer à l'instrument et j'avais plus ou moins laissé tomber, mais ces derniers temps j'ai réessayé et commence à y arriver... c'est très particulier comme sentiment, c'est comme avoir mis un pied de l'autre côté du miroir. La vidéo centrale sur le sujet s'appelle je crois "Starting with speed", elle est peut-être encore sur KZbin. Donc un pédagogue talentueux ne peut pas vous montrer EXACTEMENT la bonne porte MAIS au lieu de 30 portes devant vous, il n'y en aura peut-être plus que 3 ou 4. Trouver la bonne impose un effort que personne ne peut faire à votre place (=adapter l'information à ses propres fonctionnement, physiologie, façon d'apprendre; expérimenter, échouer, se relever, réessayer, comprendre ses erreurs, réessayer etc.). YOu are wise and have a balanced life, and you've made this choice on purpose, I think that's great! You take someone like Pat Metheny who has relentlessly practiced for years, who has paid the price to get to that unbelievable level, and while we all benefit from that, maybe that wasn't even the best choice for him, although he seems happy. I wouldn't necessarily wish that sort of life on anybody.

Talent is also to find intuitively the best fitting way to akquire a certain skill and avoiding at the same time bad habits. In my experience most guitar players who want to learn Gypsy jazz or music in general are pretty advanced in certain isolated skills but are lacking at the very fundamentals. Playing killer licks in the bedroom and totally struggle to play a steady good sounding rhythm. If you are aware of the basics and if you develop a steady ground everything else one top of that will be so much better and refined. Two fundamentals of Gypsy jazz are: Timing and chord knowledge.

I'm not so sure wether talent exists or not .Every time they called me talented I knew that I had to work my ass of to get that initial predisposition bare a fruit of any kind,as did all the others I know about.

Personally I think people are born to be naturally good / talented at certain things and it is an exploration of discovery. I am a natural player and always have been, but I have my own door which I consider my originality door. I experiment with other genres like Gypsy Jazz, but I am not natural with their technique, so I take bits and add them to my repertoire. It is such a vast landscape, I don’t think it can been answered in any one way. Will check your book out as you do have a talent for helping people to understand complex things…

Yeah, I think my strength is creativity (song writing), but I really make an effort to learn improvisation, which is then added to my own personal creations. Each one has to find what they're good at and mix that with the other skills you're not great at.

Think you will that a lot of what you call talent is just down to hard work. As a child you don't notice because you are busy soaking up exciting info and skill. By the time they reach adulthood they would have forgotten the ease of it and will say they "I dont know I just do it" When I was in school there was a kid that could calculate complex maths as fast as the teacher gave us the maths problem. He really spoiled It for the other children. Well, what this smug little kid is not saying is that he's got excellent mathematicians as parents. Natural talent? Or well coached? Some kids do have excellent musical skills. Born right the womb with it, but they are probably somewhere on the spectrum. Some are even fed music while in the womb. Another type of coaching.
