Can you explained why the figure 8 and can I just put or trade slots on the wheel or trade the little wheels? My bobbin will not take the spun wool. I can't get started and I don't think my bobbin is spinning freely. It looks like the fly and bobbin are just turning at the same pace.

Thank you for this thorough explanation. Could you please tell me - is it necessary to have 1 figure-8 drive band, or there could be two? I bought and antique double-drive Quebec wheel and I actually put two separate strings, and it seems to work ok. But now I am in doubt. Thank you in advance.

I completely understand why you put two bands on and honestly, if you're happy with how it's spinning, there's really no reason to change it! However, you may have a harder time fixing tension issues down the road. Since you tied the bands separately, they are each at slightly different tensions and will probably stretch at different rates. There's no way to adjust for that except fiddling with the band itself. If there's any stretch in the single loop, it will be uniform through the whole thing and can be easily adjusted by nudging the tension up slightly. Thanks for the awesome question!

Yes, you are absolutely right! I already thought about it. So far, it seems to work, but I am sure at some point when I will have to deal with different fibers etc. this will be an issue. I will change it into a single band sooner rather than later. Thank you so much for answering.I appreciate it.

one or more of the tripod legs is loose in its socket. Some wood glue would help.

I know it a long shot as this video was posted 3 years ago, but i just got gifted an antique wheel with no identifying markings. We are trying to figure everything out, and i think we have. However, my wheel doesnt have an orifice at all. No sleeping beauty spindle either. It comes theough the front leather just as the back on yours does. There is a flyer with hooks and a very small bobbin. Everything else is what youd expect, but no orifice. Im stumped.

Its hard to be sure without a picture, but if there is a spike-type thing out the front, either the entire thing was put on backwards or yours may be of a different type called a spindle or quill wheel. Rather than an orifice, the yarn is spun off the tip of the "sleeping beauty spindle". Great wheels or walking wheels work the same way. If the entire thing is backwards and you don't have an orifice, the orifice may have snapped off from the flyer. A replacement piece could be made and attached to the flyer to get it working.
