Does the elevator "close door" button really work?

Certain brands of elevators will allow their door close buttons to work. As an elevator enthusiast, door close buttons do work on most elevators anytime, some work after a certain amount of time (the elevator door staying open for about 5 seconds), some elevators door close buttons don't work at all (Schindler Elevators) However that button always works in independent service (unless it is a schindler since schindler doesn't use door close buttons for that) or in fire service, those buttons must work for special elevator services.

most of the 3300 and 5500's door close buttons work

@@folddyy Only after a certain period of time. (Typically 3-5 seconds, or if a call is placed, then it might work before those 3-5 seconds)

The door close buttons work on older Otis elevators, but they don't work on newer elevators

As a elevator enthusiast, I know that some brands allow the door close button work. They can be used in case of a emergency.

in Europe, Asia every lift has "door close" button, which works.

Answer: Depends on company and setup. I know for a fact that for Schindler elevators the door close button simply doesn't work; it's only there for when the car is in fire/independent service.

The 1990 Americans With Disabilities Act actually mandates that elevator doors must stay open for a minimum of three seconds after they start opening so there will always be a three second time window from when the doors start opening that the door close button will not do anything.

Thats why Mitsubishi elevators are regarded the best elevator brand ever! Their door close button works because they keep the door open longer than the competition.

While I didn’t watch this video at the time of making this Comment, I’m making this not for the makers of this video, but rather the people who watch & Comment. It’s NOT true that all elevator door close buttons don’t work in normal service, it all depends on the elevator model/brand, even after ADA came into act.

Don't forget as well that elevators without door close buttons typically close the doors immediately when a button floor is pressed.

That's also true, some, but not all w/o door close buttons are like that.

In the country where i live i came across one (well, two that are next to each other and on the same call button) where the door sensor has to detect someone entering or exiting before the door close button will work (i did a completely non scientific test, place an up call on the ground floor, enter whichever one comes, press 4, and i can’t remember which way round it was, but one trip i pressed door close, the other trip i didn’t, and it took longer for the door to close when i did not press door close, on both trips i was the only person using it

Wow! Thank you so much for checking into this dumb myth that the close button isn't real. That makes so much sense now that there is a timer on newer elevators that make sure to keep the doors open for a specific time FIRST before the button will work. Great job!

Actually some companies in the US disable the button. See the first comment. The distance from th button is not considered unless the use destination dispatching.

Oh, I use the door close buttons all the time. ALL THE TIME. For example, family vacations in hotels. If it starts to take a while (we need our free breakfast!) I just hit the Close Door button.

one time the door close always works is when the elevator is in Independent Service, but you actally have to hold the button down or else the doors will reopen

So far in my home town of Connecticut I’ve had really good luck where the close button actually works and it was rare for me when it didn’t work

And that’s probably due to the fact that alot of the elevators we have here were installed before the effects of the door close button not working were put into place

Working door close buttons should be strictly available required by law. There's no reason for it to not work

The elevator’s close button I use to go to close to the door actually works it’s just slow enough that it just look normal And it’s slow because the elevators me and my neighbours use was built in the 190s including my neighbourhood

Every asian elevator like Mitsubishi or Asian KONE has their door close works like my mall in Philippines the door close works :/ Maybe american elevators is the only country with door close does not work.

Well with my experience, I accidentally squished a lady by pressing the close door button thinking i pressed the open doors button. So yes, they do work in elevators i've ridden. Learned it the hard way.
