Hi Kenan, when I worked as an Environmental Health Officer in QLD I came across this a few times. When water levels got low and the heat created a change in the density of the top layer the water would turn over. This released toxins trapped in the silt. It also increased the nutrient levels resulting in botulinum toxins and cynobactrium blooms. The solution is reduce the bio load and the rain will take care of the rest. The sludge can be pumped onto the grass areas where no animals are kept. Having a biofilter with strong water flow to filter out the bio load. ED has some great designes for natural ponds which work well. I hope they go well.

The vet’s diagnosis is spot-on; a build-up in gas is causing the turtles to float. Also, the flatulence bears this out. I’ve seen this occur a couple times in aquatic species. An increased water flow and the addition of a heavily planted bio-filter would decrease the toxins in the water. I’m amazed there are no water plants whatsoever in a (natural?) pond in Florida. Floating species like Water hyacinth & Water lettuce with large submerged root systems provide an excellent natural interface between water & air. They do an amazing job of filtering out waste and help shade the water from algae blooms. Charlie Moorecroft has the right idea in his Spotted turtle enclosure, it’s covered with floating aquatic plants. Blake’s Caiman enclosure is another good example.

what is weird about this is something similar happens to some fish where there is swim bladder gets infected or their intestines get infected and they fill up with gas and they call it bloat and they all start swimming weird they're swimming either near the surface Or swim down to the bottom and can't get up off the off the substrate usually the fish I've seen this happen to our Grammys specifically Opaline or snakeskin those kind of garams they just seem to be prone to it in the trade aquariums so and that is sometimes hugely a bacterial infection and usually it causes clogging of the intestines and blocking of the air bladder the swim bladder usually what helps is feeding them shelled green peas so if you get green peas you take off the shell you feed those to the fish they seem to perk up so maybe it's just a roughage is some more substantial and it helps pushing through doesn't always work some people have to resort to puncturing the swim bladder or the intestines with a needle and letting the extra gas escape with the pressure is relieved and that usually brings the fish around so they can eat again and eat more fiber's diet might be just need to feed the the turtles more more fiber at that age they need some metamucil. I'm just really trying to brainstorm what is going on because I'm totally confused as to why this is happening I don't think it should be happening but you never know
@The_Crucible7143 ай бұрын
Fish have swim bladders, turtles don’t. The symptoms they present may be similar but the causes can vary. When I was involved in a work-study program at the NY Aquarium I learned the importance of natural bio-filtration for both fresh-water & marine enclosed systems. It will mediate the cause, not just alleviate the symptoms which is the ultimate goal.

not a professional here but i think you re very well on the right track with the gas buildup inside their intestine being the main problem why did it happen? could ofcourse be multiple thing but i believe its simply a change of their gut bacteria due to high temperatures and changed eating patterns i dont think they ingested anything 'wrong' or poisonous, they are simply struggling with digestion as a whole due to the weather and ofcourse, dirty stagnant water isnt helping at all i would keep the in a clean, cold tub out of the direct sun, maybe with a pump for water flow that they have to work with and see if they return back to normal by the time it rains again (should be right now after the big storm from the recent days)

This isn't a red tide. That's lack of oxygen. That could be an issue but not if the fish are okay. Algae is peobably an issue... but I think it's clearly, low levels+heat. I don't know what your water bill or electric bill is going to be like but maybe you need to pump some fresh water into the ponds and reduce the bio load because by increasing the water you increase the surface area for the beneficial bacteria. I know your address using chemicals but there are chemicals there's a bacteria that will compete with the algae you might want to look into that it's going to be something they're eating if it's infecting their gut then it's getting into their bodies somehow either orally or anally Definitely try pumping in some fresh water and try and talk to Ed because I'm sure he knows about the bacterium that can be added to ponds and wreck ponds and what not to lower the or compete with the algae that's stuff decay and as nutrients into the water as the water concentrates that's the problem they only talk to Ed and talk to your marine biologist friend and see what he both of them think about the bacteria that compete with the algae. you have one of those black and white disk that you can drop into the water to see how far you can see definitely use that thing to help you decide whether or not there's too much algae or not enough if you can't see the disk below certain depth then it's too much algae If you can't see it then there's not enough allergy but some something's going on I think your oxygen levels are probably low also by adding cooler water you'll increase the oxygen levels in the ponds.
@andylevers.-ei9if3 ай бұрын
This could be caused through lack of oxygen in the water.i would suggest if you can add a waterfall or something similar to keep the water moving and airated. Best wishes mate.
