Hi Kenan, when I worked as an Environmental Health Officer in QLD I came across this a few times. When water levels got low and the heat created a change in the density of the top layer the water would turn over. This released toxins trapped in the silt. It also increased the nutrient levels resulting in botulinum toxins and cynobactrium blooms. The solution is reduce the bio load and the rain will take care of the rest. The sludge can be pumped onto the grass areas where no animals are kept. Having a biofilter with strong water flow to filter out the bio load. ED has some great designes for natural ponds which work well. I hope they go well.

I second this here in South Carolina there is a huge problem with the oxygen levels dropping because of the heat and causes this same effect maybe a good idea to get some fountains or something to get more surface agatation that or he can add pond aerators

The vet’s diagnosis is spot-on; a build-up in gas is causing the turtles to float. Also, the flatulence bears this out. I’ve seen this occur a couple times in aquatic species. An increased water flow and the addition of a heavily planted bio-filter would decrease the toxins in the water. I’m amazed there are no water plants whatsoever in a (natural?) pond in Florida. Floating species like Water hyacinth & Water lettuce with large submerged root systems provide an excellent natural interface between water & air. They do an amazing job of filtering out waste and help shade the water from algae blooms. Charlie Moorecroft has the right idea in his Spotted turtle enclosure, it’s covered with floating aquatic plants. Blake’s Caiman enclosure is another good example.

Hi Kenan. What about planting up your pond with marginal, submerged and surface plants to shade more from the sun and use up some of the nutrients in the water to reduce algea bloom and increase water quality? It would be costly up front to put in enough plants to get ahead of the turtles grazing. Just a thought. Hope they all recover.

what is weird about this is something similar happens to some fish where there is swim bladder gets infected or their intestines get infected and they fill up with gas and they call it bloat and they all start swimming weird they're swimming either near the surface Or swim down to the bottom and can't get up off the off the substrate usually the fish I've seen this happen to our Grammys specifically Opaline or snakeskin those kind of garams they just seem to be prone to it in the trade aquariums so and that is sometimes hugely a bacterial infection and usually it causes clogging of the intestines and blocking of the air bladder the swim bladder usually what helps is feeding them shelled green peas so if you get green peas you take off the shell you feed those to the fish they seem to perk up so maybe it's just a roughage is some more substantial and it helps pushing through doesn't always work some people have to resort to puncturing the swim bladder or the intestines with a needle and letting the extra gas escape with the pressure is relieved and that usually brings the fish around so they can eat again and eat more fiber's diet might be just need to feed the the turtles more more fiber at that age they need some metamucil. I'm just really trying to brainstorm what is going on because I'm totally confused as to why this is happening I don't think it should be happening but you never know

Fish have swim bladders, turtles don’t. The symptoms they present may be similar but the causes can vary. When I was involved in a work-study program at the NY Aquarium I learned the importance of natural bio-filtration for both fresh-water & marine enclosed systems. It will mediate the cause, not just alleviate the symptoms which is the ultimate goal.

not a professional here but i think you re very well on the right track with the gas buildup inside their intestine being the main problem why did it happen? could ofcourse be multiple thing but i believe its simply a change of their gut bacteria due to high temperatures and changed eating patterns i dont think they ingested anything 'wrong' or poisonous, they are simply struggling with digestion as a whole due to the weather and ofcourse, dirty stagnant water isnt helping at all i would keep the in a clean, cold tub out of the direct sun, maybe with a pump for water flow that they have to work with and see if they return back to normal by the time it rains again (should be right now after the big storm from the recent days)

I don't know what your water bill or electric bill is going to be like but maybe you need to pump some fresh water into the ponds and reduce the bio load because by increasing the water you increase the surface area for the beneficial bacteria. I know your address using chemicals but there are chemicals there's a bacteria that will compete with the algae you might want to look into that it's going to be something they're eating if it's infecting their gut then it's getting into their bodies somehow either orally or anally Definitely try pumping in some fresh water and try and talk to Ed because I'm sure he knows about the bacterium that can be added to ponds and wreck ponds and what not to lower the or compete with the algae that's stuff decay and as nutrients into the water as the water concentrates that's the problem they only talk to Ed and talk to your marine biologist friend and see what he both of them think about the bacteria that compete with the algae. you have one of those black and white disk that you can drop into the water to see how far you can see definitely use that thing to help you decide whether or not there's too much algae or not enough if you can't see the disk below certain depth then it's too much algae If you can't see it then there's not enough allergy but some something's going on I think your oxygen levels are probably low also by adding cooler water you'll increase the oxygen levels in the ponds.

can you put the Gator snappers in with the Gators or just make it too difficult to deal with both room at the same time Hey Kennon you're complaining or Kate's complaining if there's none of the flowers in your yard what if you planted some pineapples to grow and to eat and you feed to some of the animals it may be too sugary for some of them, but hey you and the kids in the cake and eat them and they have beautiful flowers and what's great about them is if you cut off the tops of the pineapple you can plant that in damp sand let it root and then put it into lava rocks and soil and it will grow it'll produce new plants because it's formulae at and if you ever have a cold or just congestion eat some pineapple because the bromine in it helps clear up your lungs helps open them up and gives them air passages Better volume to move air That's what I always do I always eat pineapple or drink pineapple juice when I get congested in the fall and winter and it helps keep my lungs clear which is great and all without having to take pills or chemicals or sprays or inhalers they just make it much easier all around that way so I just want to let you know it's a possibility for your gardens in areas to grow pineapples the other thing you could also grow is ginger get some ginger from the store stick it in the ground and let it grow and they have beautiful red flowers and you'll attract a lot of pollinators that way too So those turtles and tortoises that eat insects will get a few

I still say once you get in done with quarantine out of the big pond into the tubs put them in your wreck pond and let them swim around so that they can go deep and the water's cleaner there you know that for a fact If that water is much cleaner I mean the only other place you could I would say put them with put them in slakies enclosure but I don't know if he'd bother them or try and eat them or what cause he didn't do too well with that one elongated did you put in there and he was bigger than these guys so put him in the wreck pond I don't know if they like escape from there but were they going to go on the property you know I mean they're going to stay where the water is right maybe hide out of the water but they're not going to go far are they or can they I don't know it's up to you to decide what's the best place for them someplace where there's clean flowing water where they cannot escape I don't know if it's your front yard stream but the backyard Sophia's pond or Sophia's stream that might be a good area if it's fenced in and they cannot get out but it'll give them the area they need to get fresh water to swim in not all turtles are made to go into a pond

eating some kind of fish that's toxic to them? I mean the only other thing I can think of I agree with you is water quality it give me just there's so much animal poop in the water that is causing a bacterial bloom also as well as analogy bloom so it might not be a toxic algae but might be a bacterial toxic bacterial boom? your marina's friend is going to have to do some water testing and check the salinity check the alkalinity the by all load I mean the bacterial load in the pond I suspect that it's mostly what it is it's just too much bacteria or too much algae one of the two or too much of both what if you move one of the Orlandia into the wreck bond and see how it does see if it can swim and float and get down in the water and does better because I know the rec pond is got a flowing system that is being continually cleaned by filters and bacterial load beneficial bacteria. I just test one of them out in the red pond and see how it does just swim with it and see what it's doing if it doesn't look like it's doing well there then move it to the tub but definitely do check it in the rec bond.

Definitely looks like you’re having a pond crash and that LG will steal all of the oxygen towards the end of the night
