I try not to be that big of a snob and usually think in old vr new comparense that the new one is just as good here not so much. I do a lot of speaker swaps as i beleive they make the biggest easiest change in your amps tone.so old one wins by a shitload to me. @Johan Segeborn I watch a lot of guitar/tone/review videos to inform myself on what I am looking for in my own tone search. There are dozens of videos that have very capable and even virtuosic guitar players and despite the high level of playing ability, composing in these videos often falls flatter than flat. Opinion is subjective, yes, but one thing that makes your videos so great is your songwriting ability. That is to say, the licks, the riffs and the balance of the "band" to play in it's respective role in a completely digestible way. That and the simple approach you take for recording. I love the drums sound in this one. That kick has sooooo much character. This track has been playing in my mind for 3 days! As always, great work!

I’ve got a 68 B cab with the original Greenbacks and I’ve had 2 1960ax cabs, one with English reissue Greenbacks and the other with Chinese. This video sums up the differences perfectly. The 1960ax is a decent cab but it just hasn’t got the midrange to handle authentic vintage tones.

I was actually surprised to hear that the newer cab, with the newer speakers, had a vintage green back meets blackback vibe. I could actually imagine getting a convincing AC/DC (Highway era ) tone.

Johan great video, But i wasnt surprised of the results. Celestion moved their basic line of speakers production to their plant in china somewhere in 2003. Leaving only the heritage series, alnico gold, blue and Mesa's V30 version to still being produced in the UK. Which means that the v30s, g75t12 creambacks and greenbacks are being produced in china with different cone sizes and materials, hence the big difference in sound! However there are some good news, apparently some v30s "marshall label" are still being produced in the UK but only in some of the 1960av and bv models across the UK.

Love the 71 cabinet :-) Thank you for doing this essential comparison - such a pity the new Marshall cabinets just don't sound as good. I have tried custom cabinets from other makers that use seasoned wood for the cabinets, with a real attention to detail with the joins on the corners, type of wood glue, grill cloth material, etc. It all makes a difference but cost more of course.

I agree with most of the comments that the reissue is a bit thin, but that may have something to do with the amp that it is paired up with. One thing I have learned from watching so many demos on this channel is the combination of amp and cab creates the tone, so maybe an amp more pronounced in mods and mid lows would have a better result.

The camera tells the story. When he’s playing the riff in the lower register, see how the older cab and speakers makes the camera rumble. The newer cab with the reissues doesn’t have the thump to do that. I’m just curious. Since cabinet resonance is a real thing, I wonder if putting the original speakers in the re-issue cabinet would sound the same as the older speakers in the older cabinet. It just makes me wonder if the construction of the cabinet and the wood that was used in the old cabinet is playing a big role in the tone as well. Hmm...

Good point, but the mike on the 1960AX is placed closer to the center than on the original. That makes the reissue sound brighter. On the other hand, I have experienced that reissued greenbacks sound a bit harsh compared to originals. In this case I think the comparison is a bit unfair, and set to the extreme because of the mike positioning.

71 sounded warm and creamy..smooth like butter. Something is different. There is the age of the wood to consider. The thickness of the tolex to consider as well as the glues used to hold the toilet down. Then of course the actual wood species used in the plywood for the 71 cab..
