I bought one of the H8’s for my Grandson who is studying for his Tech license. Until then, he can talk with me on the GNRS frequencies. I did all the programming for him. I was overall very impressed with this radio. So much so, that I bought another one for me. I won’t get it until the first part of August. I may need to buy one for my Granddaughter as she seems to be showing an interest. All the best…. DE N0FB… 73

Could you boot into GMRS mode and run the power test again? I asked on Amazon what’s the difference between the Ham and GMRS versions of the radio. The response said GMRS is power limited by the firmware and by being supplied with a different antenna. We’ll, I have a gen1 Ham, a gen2 Ham, and a gen1 GMRS. They all have the same antenna.

Hi Mike, Thanks for saying hi at Dayton. On the radio, just a thought...the battery can fluctuate its voltage, so you might want to connect it to a dedicated power supply for consistency. If the battery starts to fluctuate, it can screw up power output readings. Ive had it happen. But that is a really cool radio. Also bring to your attention, one of the mfg's just brought out a quad band...6, 2, 220, and 440 ht. Its around 200+ ish. 73s, John, N8SGM.

Can you boot it into GMRS and test the output on the upper channels and see what is the most it would push? Curious if it would be different than using the frequency in Ham mode.

I got the 1st gen of this radio and it is a pretty slick radio. I've been really enjoying it myself. That USB-C charger feature which the 1st gen doesn't have I bet is pretty handy. Thanks for another great video Mike! 73

My 2 HAM units are very similar to what you have. Except at high power in MURS band =11.5 watts. GMRS high power 3.5 watts. My co-worker bought the GMRS version of this radio and it puts out 10.1 watts in the GMRS but after unlocking it only puts out 3ish watts in the 2-meter band and MURS.

Hi Mike here in the UK TidRadio will not dispatch the option of two batteries. Since the second battery is external and external batteries cannot be shipped to UK. Sucks yes . I have asked TIDRadio what if the first battery fails or I need a second battery for availability they have yet to come back to me. If they reply I’ll add an update. Thanks

I received one today, not happy. When transmitting and touching the battery, it has very bad feedback. When not touching the battery, there is no feedback. Waiting on the manufacturer to respond if there’s a fix. Seems some other people have this issue and some don’t. I hoped I would get lucky.

On the Amazon website there was a review that stated : Dan kublank 2.0 out of 5 stars This is a GMRS radio only! Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 6, 2023 Even though they say it’s Ham and 6 other frequency ranges, the USA version is GMRS radio only. It’s a good radio with clear and loud voice volume. Non programming since it’s locked even though they send a programming cable with it. Makes one scratch their head in wonder. Is this true? Thank you!

I am thinking about buying two of these and making a repeater. since there are two antennas, there is no need for a duplexer, hopefully maintaining between 7 and 10 watts. My questions are. Do you think this would work? Which antennas would you recommend? I have seen projects using Baofengs, but I would like to use these radios. The radios will placed inside a small Vault gun case that is weatherproof. Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't tried out the repeater capabilities of these radios but they are advertised to do so, so who knows? As far as antennas for this type of setup, I believe you'd need 2. I'm a big fan of the Ed Fong Roll Up J-Pole antennas for portable VHF/UHF. You can get them here: grapevineamateurradio.com/collections/radio-gear/products/ed-fong-j-pole-antennas-dual-band-220-and-roll-up Just make sure you select the proper antenna for the frequencies you want to operate. And you would want the Roll Up, not the PVC one as that is made to go inside a PVC pipe for a more permanent installation. Get em up high with a decent coax for VHF/UHF and you should be all set.

Dear Sensei, thank you! Output power may seem unimportant, in the sense of one or two watts not making much difference in ability to be heard by other users. For this user, it more about “truth in advertising”. Anyway - as always - thank you.

Doubling from 5 to 10 is a big deal, more watts is always good, if that were not true you would not run 50 or 100 watt base stations. I find your dismissing of this as disingenuous.
