Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton try to find out from Valterri Bottas what the word 'excited' means in Finnish with little success.
Vettel: Does the word 'exciting'... does the word 'excited' exist in Finnish?
Bottas: Kind of, yeah...
Hamilton: It's probably something really simple like 'hoie'... What is 'exciting' in Finnish?
Bottas: What is it? Visible confusion
Vettel: See! It doesn't exist! You see!
Hamilton: It's not one that's really used much in the vocabulary...
Bottas: I don't know really... erm.... internal struggle

A Finn here. I had to think about it for 5-10 minutes. Being "innostunut" isn't quite the same thing - and not a very common thing to say 😅 More literally that would be "enthusiastic". I'd rather say "innoissani" (almost the same thing), but more common would be to say that something is exciting - "jännittävää". But that kinda also means that you are "tense" or "nervous" or that something is even scary. The most accurate word might be "kiihtynyt"? ...But that's "aroused" as in sexually or getting angry 🙄 It's true. Getting excited is not very Finnish. The mentality is that you shouldn't get excited in a happy way because things will probably turn out bad, so it would be stupid to get excited. And also you are foolish if you loose your "cool". Finns don't get excited - we get drunk. In more modern "slangish" finnish you can say "täpinöissään" - kinda like being "jittery" and excited in a good way. Or "fiiliksissä" - that's happy, excited, uplifted. The younger generation isn't as gloomy as the older ones.

Finns often have a very direct and uncomplicated answer. It could be seen with mika. Often with Kimi (i had to take a shit) and with bottas (Porridge). It is said that the deadliest sniper in history, finnish Simo Häyhä, answered the question "What did you feel when you killed a Soviet" with "Recoil". Which seems very reasonable to be honest.

If you want to say "I am excited." in Finnish you would say "NO NIIIN." with a rising voice on the second word. However, be prepared to get a blank stare when it is out of context because in general, you are not expected to express a lot of emotion - especially when talking with a stranger.

I'm finnish and it took like 2 minutes to figure this puzzle and I came to the conclusion that there is no word for it. Many similar ones but none that would straight up translate to "excited" Edit: nvm I got it now... Took me just a lot of thinking and looking at the comments :D

The problem is that the literal translation still actually means something in Finnish, while the word excited has suffered a massive inflation due to overuse and nowadays actually means something like "mildly amused" by Finnish standards. Of course, the Finnish standard is also too high for any Finn to actually ever use the word.

Same with words like ”love.” Pretty much all ”emotional words.” Or words that describe emotion. Kinda explains the social awkwardness and introvertion. Being an open book means being ”fully open” here.
