Another reviewer said you can't disassemble it to clean it. I like my pens sorta spotless (except for the one dedicated to Bay State Blue), so I decided to skip this one. And now, you're telling us that it leaks. So, yeah...thank you again, Doodlebud.

It's doesn't leak, just doesn't pass the nib down vacuum test (simulated flight) which most pens dont pass that test. Only a handful pass nib down. Not an amazing pen (at least in my view) but doesn't leak under normal conditions.

Great content with lots of valuable info! The polarity check is a good indicator of internal stresses, which may cause brittleness especially when exposed to extreme temperature or pressure. Also (as others mentioned) the Wing Sung 698 is probably a closer comparison than the TWSBI ECO, as it’s also a piston filler with a locking knob.

This really does read as a solution looking for a problem. And arguably makes it worse, as locking it causes some spray (At least in this video). Also that build quality (or lack thereof) really spoils the deal, with the threads and sealing problems .Considering that a Twsbi 580ALR can be had for around the same cost, it just doesn't feel worth it. I really appreciate how all these little details are shown and discussed in this video. I really appreciate the "living with it" style testing that is done.

I am just two minutes into the video. But I am seeing some hate in the comment here and in other video reviews for the lock system. I actually love it, and I think it is an amazing addition. Let me explain. I live in a mountain. My house is at a hight barely below 2000 meters (6400 ft) above sea level, but my workplace is at about 1200 m (3800 ft), and my wife's at 900 m (3000). We both write a lot, almost exclusively with fountain pens, and like pens with larger ink capacities. We own quite a few TWSBIs. The ECO and 580 start burping ink on us often, once the reservoir is about half empty. Guess what... we bought two of these, and as soon as we see enough space to push the puston out and flysh the air out, we do it. Not one instance of burping since, and we both have gone through at leas one entire filling (I am in my 3rd, but I like broad nibs).

Huh. I have had a few piston pens over the years with a locking piston knob - the wing sung 618 in particular comes to mind. I did enjoy having that extra security on the pens that do it, but I don’t know if it’s the… major innovation Monteverde is trying to make it sound like 😅

Agreed. The Wingsung 698 has been around since late 2016. It's an all plastic pen which happens to have an innovative² TM piston locking mechanism. :)))) The 698 came out a little before a slew of other models, including the 3008 and your version. Check out chrisrap52 for his 2017 reviews of these models. The 698 itself is an outstanding and versatile pen that's aminable to easy nib replacement or modding. Peace out.

@mariexlupin Many thanks. Yeah, watching that chrisrap video right now :) He also mentions the no tool disassembly of the piston. I should direct people on Doodlebud's general comments on the Monteverde. The similarities between the Monteverde and the WingSung are "excessive," apart from the nib. :)

There are other pens that have a locking piston like that. I can't think of any names at the moment, but I'm sure I've even had it on some cheap Chinese pens, maybe Wingsung or Jinhao or PenBBS

Yeah never had a problem of the twist piston engaging, but I only travel with Kaweco or the Nova Pocket (thanks to your review, lovely pen) so maybe it is a problem for people who toss their pen into their bag or something They need to make more piston fillers that you can unscrew the entire nib and grip section imo, so much easier to clean the barrel and grease up the piston, this one I see has a restrictor behind the nib too, terrible design.

Well that was a timely reminder for me to check a new Lamy nib I put on my pen yesterday. I’m used to that pen being scratchy and hadn’t realized the new nib was a bit misaligned. Any advice on a good source for cheap practice nibs? I feel like I need to improve my skills but don’t want to wreck a bunch of Lamy nibs learning.

Aliexpress. There's bunch of cheap nibs (Jinhao has quite a few and I believe they have Lamy Safari compatible clones). I learned tuning nibs on Jinhao's no6, they were like a lot of 5 for couple of dollars.

The rainbows not only show where stress is trapped in the plastic, the more rapid the rate of color change over distance the greater the stress. The problem starts with injection. Shape your mold wrong or poorly locate your injection ports (gates) causes flow induced stress. Cool things down too quickly and internal stresses balloon. Miss handle any a number of factors increases stress. It all gets "frozen in" as the part solidifies. Over time this frozen in stress can cause micro-cracks to appear. These cracks shift stress distribution to the point where it exceeds the strength of the material - that's when you get sudden, catastrophic failure. This is why a pen sitting unmolested in your desk drawer might suddenly break. Attention to minimizing molded in stress stops when failure losses are low enough management chooses to live with it. Note: Attaching finials and pocket clips adds mechanical stress, the reason you see a lot of failures at those points.

It's an idea. A well executed idea? No, they could have engineered if better. I dont like the looseness of it when it's in the locked position and the snapping noise it makes to get there.

In all my years using fountain pens I have never run into the problem of the piston turning. This seems just like a gimmick to me. I'd be more concerned with over-tightening the cap and cracking the acrylic body. Overall, the pen just looks cheap to me. All of that plus the amount of turns needed to uncap the pen means I'll pass. Especially at that price point.

Attractive pen, however appears problematic. My only experience with Monteverde was a couple years ago with a Ritma, also visually attractive, but it was not a good experience. Doesn't look like their design/QC has changed for the better. But they do have a solution in search of a problem.

I had their giant sequoia pen, absolutely gorgeous but it wasn't a great experience using it, and their ink bottle, wasn't even threaded correctly and had a sharp edge that cut my finger twisting it open...

For the love of the universe, I do not understand why it's so difficult to design a piston knob that just won't turn when you cap your pen. It's not rocket science. It doesn't have to lock. Just make it smaller OR make the cap crap much lower than the knob. Or just do both.
