😳 is that a Mr Clean magic eraser? You should buy one and compare... they’re affectionately known as paint removers here in the US- very bad to use on a painted wall, lol... but great on tile etc 😜

Jenna, it sounds as though you're keen on this? Please say that you aren't? Here's what I just wrote for Kirsty: I hesitated about saying this, but having read the comments that actually comment on the sponge, the consensus is that this is just a renamed household sponge, so I will... Just watching this video (before reading the comments), I thought, "Oh no! How many people are going to be taken in by this???" and was thankful to hear you say that kitchen paper will do the job just as well. Surely with all that scrubbing, however gently, it damages the surface of the paper and lifts off the sizing? Also, environmentally, this is yet another non-recyclable piece of 'sponge' that (as commented here) disintegrates pretty fast, leaving all those little bits in the water to go down the sink... I could write so much more, and want to scream with frustration, but I won't. I'll just repeat, Thanks, Kirsty, for that comment, "... kitchen paper will do the job just as well." I wonder how many people actually took note of that? I hope that they did / do!

@@KirstyPartridgeArt Thanks, Kirsty. I'm seriously worried about some of the 'new products' that are appearing on the art market at the moment, and it was good to watch your review. I'm hoping that Jenna and others will pick it up and come to the same conclusion, and so help the many inexperienced artists who think that they need / ought to have the 'latest thing' to produce good art, instead of enjoying what they do with whatever is to hand - pencil, brush, paper, and colouring material (paint, pencil, pastel ...)

I’ve used magic eraser for years. It is a melamine foam. Buy it from the cleaning aisle not Frisk - half the price. It comes into its own on dry paint (as you say just use towel on wet). It is a last resort. It will damage the paper after about three passes, but lifts more than a towel.
@kr1221E2 жыл бұрын
I am amazed at how intuitively you get images from your mind's eye onto paper, fantastic.
@patriciabarry58002 жыл бұрын
I have used it a lot to fix problems or make changes in my work. For example if paint splashes where you don’t want it. Firstly use a tissue to blot it then use a slightly damp brush with clean water and gently remove some of the paint. Let it dry completely, then with a very small piece of magic sponge, barely damp gently rub it. It works like magic. If you have been heavy handed and the paper is damaged, make sure it is dry and rub the back of a smooth flat spoon over the paper to smooth it down. If you are concerned it won’t fix it mix a drop of gum Arabic in water and lightly paint the spot with that before smoothing down once it has dried. Good luck. Some paints stain the paper which is a problem but I have still had good results.

A less expensive alternative is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser cleaning product. They're the same thing. You can find generic brands of too. I never had the paper break down with moderate scrubbing (I use Arches Cold Press 140lb). There are crumbs left behind though. It looks like the paper, but it's actually the sponge itself breaking down as you use it. It's been a terrific tool for accidents that have dried or are too staining. I cut mine into triangles which gives me a very small point for a concentrated area and a wider end for a broader area. Constant rinsing, as you mentioned, is the key to success with these. Also, don't use them sparingly. When you see them breaking down, toss them. They work best when new and are cheap enough to not be worried about conserving them. They're terrific for hobbyists who work with models and toys. They will remove the printing on toys leaving you a blank toy customize as you wish. Changing expressions on dolls and action figures can be a fun project and these sponges help.

A much less expensive way is just to use kitchen roll - as Kirsty pointed out a couple of times during this video.

@@MrsBarnabas paper towels are not as effective as these sponges after the paint has dried. The paper towels will tear the paper if you scrub to hard. These sponges only need a light touch to erase heavily pigmented or staining watercolors that have already dried. Sorry if I wasnt clear on that.

@@camart3519 Kirsty has replied to Jenna Rainey's question - that it does actually damage the paper. Anything will damage paper if we scrub with it - even a paint brush.

Thank you for the demonstration Kirsty. That is very helpful. As many have pointed out it is just the regular magic eraser and as I posted myself just now, they are made from melamine. Coincidentally I looked them up the other day after getting tea stains from a cup, and found they can be used for cleaning acrylic bathtubs and brass, as well as the other things it's recommended for. I once used it to clean a white painted wooden closet door after we'd had workmen in the house and found it worked very well but dulled the finish. It also left behind crumbs, so I washed the door down again with clear water. I'd agree that ordinary kitchen paper would be best. It's not a plastic like the eraser so it's biodegradable, but the eraser would be good to have in a pinch.

The same count for the paper choise. So it will work with other colors on different kind of papier maybe better or worse.

An additional test would be to try to remove the purple spot outside the washy tape. I have M.E. and found it very frustrating to almost complete a piece of botanical illustration only for my arm and hand to go into spasm and ruin my work. I've just bought a magic eraser for £1 from Ebay with free postage, which has successfully removed old coffee stains from my internal doors and frames. I cut small pieces off to test with various art and craft projects. Cross fingers it works.

@@MrsBarnabas A lot of people already have magic sponge erasers in their household arsenal so they are not buying for the purpose. The sponge erasers don’t damage the paper if you know how to use them properly. Many professional watercolour artists use the sponge erasers - there are videos going back years on YT showing this and what one artist doesn’t like/recommend, another one might like/recommend, we see this time and time again. It’s a matter of preference, there’s no right or wrong. Peace.
