Does This Show Cats Remember And Think About Life Events???

Todd lost two of his special Jingle Ball toys in 24 hours. These are Todd’s “Special” toys. It is his favorite thing to do but it has to be this exact Jingle Ball. If it is not the same size, colors, and lattice pattern he will not touch it. After each ball was broken Todd became visibly upset. I had to leave on a business trip right after the second one was broken. Upon my return, before I came upstairs Todd said Ouch Jingle Ball pushing the ouch button and tapping the Jingle Ball button. Todd never uses the button unless I am upstairs so this was very unusal, was he talking to himself. Do cats think about these things and dwell on them like we do? I wish he could tell me more.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. I'm just hoping they don't associate their Human Caregivers with all of the Bad Stuff they can recall. (MY feline Mistress has a memory of a nasty little Radio Controlled "Airchine" hitting her right in the Side, while her attention was "Elsewhere." ​@@richardjensen2769They also remember the positive things too. The best explanation I've heard is that you basically build a trust bank and need to be careful about things that withdrawal from that. And this is made much easier by putting the time in to build a positive relationship with your cat. There's a lot you can do to build that, but playing with them consistently is an easy place to start.

Just seeing the look on his face when the first one was broken said everything. It was devastating. Then when he went to his buttons and jingle bell wouldn't even make a sound he looked completely defeated and devastated to the core. I felt so terrible for him I actually started to cry. I hate to see such a sweet boy so sad. I'm glad he got more of the right kind of jingle balls in the end.

These buttons are definitely teaching is us that they get sad and worried just like humans and that that they can think about things that bother them for a longer time. Though I don't know if they are thinking but more a uncomfortable feeling, as Todd has got a simple language he definitely is thinking with words too. It's so fashinating, more research needs to be done about animals using buttons, like as example there are many who think animals only live right now and can't think about the past and the future or have any plans for future, Todd and Billi definitely does even if their future and past are probably more couple of days long.

Poor Todd, I feel for him. I can speak from experience---yes cats do remember and think about everything. My mom's seal point in the last two years of her life went totally blind very suddenly, but she had memorized our house completely and functioned very well on a daily basis. Cats have amazing memories, AND THEY FIGURE OUT SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS THEY HAVE. Get him more jingle balls please, he obviously misses playing with it. DC

The problem is he will only play with one ball and it has to match exactly in colors, size, lattice pattern and bell or he won't touch it. They haven't made these in years and so far they have only been found in existing boxes of old cat toys in homes.

Sometimes he will stare at the spot where the other dog's bed was for several minutes, then let out a sigh and put his head down on his paws. They seem to remember good things, too. 😂😂😂

This cat is something else! You can actually tell he's visibly upset (almost depressed?) about his broken jingle bell toys. So much so that he's not interested in socializing or saying "hi" to Dad. I know in my heart that cat's definitely feel depressed mlone of my kitties siblings came for 6 months to live with us (my sister's cat's) and they'd play all day. When she moved out he was depressed for a month and kept looking for him from the catio. Both siblings became very quiet and slept most of the day. It was heartbreaking to see them grieving. So when something/someone is important to them when it goes missing or gets broken, they react in the same ways we humans do. I know cats and dogs have memories. They also have dreams, there's scientific studies out there for that one.

Wow, the realization that the whole time that you were gone on your business trip, that Todd has been mourning the loss of his second jingle ball. You can for sure see the fear and sadness in his eyes. He is a very expressive cat. I feel sooo bad for him. Also, you can't tell us that you have good news and then put that into a video for tomorrow :-( I may need to use Todd's MAD button, haha.. I don't like cliffhangers. And I feel sooo invested into Todd and his feelings that I want to know (as Todd button says) "now" hehe.. now I will be opening my KZbin app every hour in hopes that the new video will be there. Aw, poor Dad! After watching cats who have AIC buttons I am sure they understand much more than we thought they did. They understand time. They remember when you tell them they can do something when you get home and remind you if you forget. I can't get over Todd knowing the difference between 15 and 16 minutes. It gives you a very different view of animals that we think are inferior to us. We can't even explain to ourselves why we are born as a human and not a different animal? Bunny is a thinker. She recently asked why it rains. I'm still amazed by how they are able to translate our language into theirs and then translate their thoughts back into English and find the corresponding buttons. I couldn't do it without the words and symbols on the buttons. I wonder if they recognize the symbols or if it's just position.

There’s a book “All cats are Autistic”. I don’t know if you know much about Autism but it’s fairly widely accepted that routine is massively important and change is very difficult. It’s clearly Todd’s favourite toy, and adjusting to life without it will be uncomfortable without Todd. And getting a replacement (even an identical one) will not be the same one (two) he’s lost and he just needs time and support to adjust to change.

I think the "ouch" is for both him and his Jingle Balls. It is clear that he is thinking about them. Maybe he is not pressing down because he understands that they are gone, but he still wants them. I realize that he has another one, but he seems to be lamenting the ones that have passed on. Are they so badly damaged that they can't be patched up? Maybe, at least, you can keep the pieces so even if it takes a few broken ones to make 1, it'd help. You could also save the pieces for material & color samples if someone can build one in a 3d printer!?

I am saving the pieces as color reference if I can get a company to make them. The broken ones are beyond repair. I would worry about small pieces breaking off. I thought about the 3 d printer but several people said they believe the plastics can be toxic.

Poor Todd. He misses you when to go away to work. You didn't intentionally break the first Jingle Ball. How was the second Jingle Ball brocken downstairs. Did it get damaged on it bouncing down or did "Dad" step on another one. Thank goodness there is still 1 left. I believe Todd is sad, so he pressed "ouch" and then gently tapped"Jingle Ball." It wasn't ment for talking to you directly because you weren't in the upper room with him. Maybe he pushed those buttons every day that you were away. He's sad, not "MAD." Apparently what makes a True Jingle ball is a 1.5 in or 3.8 cm diameter ball which is half almost a hot pink and half blue with a metal ball and specific pattern to the lattice work. If any of these things are not right it is an Orb of Sadness

No worries, thank you for looking! Todd is set with them right now. Todd's friend in the UK found some that were inside a bigger ball, bought 20 of them and sent them to Todd. The are right in everyway but the bell. I can change out the bell as needed for replacements.

I believe I know the ones and have bought the balls. One that looks just like it is actually a bigger ball with another ball inside of it and then a bell in the smaller ball. He won't touch it. The other one, I ordered the 25 pack hoping to get one or two but he is using an old picture, everything was half white and Todd again, won't touch it. Thank you for looking!

Can’t you take the jingle bell that was stepped on and put it in the other balls he would not play. Switch the jingle bells. I wonder if Todd would play with it. The jingle bell has a unique sound than the other balls you had. Just a suggestion.

With Todd it is the whole package. The ball must be the same pink and blue, the same size, have the same lattice pattern, and have a metal bell or he won't play with it. That is a great idea but believe me I have tried everything. The only think I have left to try is to see if I can cut a blue and white ball in hale and a pink and white ball in half and seek if I can glue them together.

I was so hoping you had stepped on the old, crappy JB. Bummer to find out it was one of the new ones. 😢😔😩☹ Omg! And another one bit the dust? Awful! 😲😨 I believe Todd is reacting to your energy. My cat started obsessively licking herself, when I was going through a very frightening, high anxiety time, and when I got better, my cat stopped the licking behavior. I think you can influence Todd's attitude towards JB's, as he is closely connected to you. Maybe, if you act excited and happy and encouraging, and persistently throw him all manner of other JB's, he might change his tune. Rather than sympathize with Todd and let him reject them, try to make (by your words, feelings, actions) any color JB be special. Your and Todd's life, in regards to JB's, would be much less stressful. I think it could work, as he trusts and loves you. Anyway, just thought I'd suggest it! Poor sweet Todd. ❤‍🩹 This is now a story with a cliffhanger. We end with our hero sitting sadly at his word board after pressing 'Ouch' and then repeatedly pushing 'Jingle Ball' in despair. As if to ask for help, he then breaks the 4th wall and looks directly at the camera at 6:15 - at us! His eyes are pleading, "Can anyone on the outside save my precious toys from Dad, the madman who has gone on a Jingle Ball killing spree?" So now we wait to see if the villain whacks the final Jingle Ball, or redeems himself . . . 😆

@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks You had better, or Todd will forever know you as the Jingle Ball Squisher. 😆 It occurred to me last night that maybe he wasn't so much reflecting on just the fact that you had squished Jingle Ball, but maybe he thinks Jingle Ball FELT being squished and hurt? I honestly doubt he understood how rare his Jingle Balls are, or the search to find another one. He would have to be able to process a lot more speech for that. I think it may be his distress is something else. People are always debating whether animals have feelings or can feel pain (they do!), but it seems the next layer may be the animal believing their toys have feelings or feel pain. A toddler would probably believe that, so Todd could, too. If you have ever stepped on his foot, I would bet he is translating that pain to Jingle Ball - and then it shattered! - so he's imaging major pain for Jingle Ball (and worrying about his own mortality risks around Dad's killer feet?). Someone else may have mentioned this in the comments, but just in case, thought I'd throw the idea out there. Oh, and stop this Jingle Ball killing spree! 😂

We've seen several instances of Todd showing empathy towards Dad when Dad feels bad, or when he has hurt him (Dad has told him 'Ouch' so he understands others can feel pain, too), so if he can imagine his Dad suffering, then it is entirely possible that he thinks his toy hurt when it was crushed. He hasn't lived a life of killing other animals for food, but that of a very pampered and loved house cat with a personal chef. Plus, there are these word buttons that allow him to communicate on an entirely different level with humans. His brain already wasn't honed to be a predator, and these buttons have only evolved his thinking even more. You can imagine a toddler may have thought its toy felt pain if it was broken, and with Todd being about on that level, it really makes me wonder if he thought his toy actually Felt pain when it was crushed, and that is what made him sad? I am certain he does not understand that his Jingle Ball is at risk of extinction due to a potential Jingle Ball serial killer foot stomp, so it is something else going on in that cute, fluffy head of his.

1) Cats definitely remember things. Short term memory is up to 14 hours. Long term memory is their whole life (or at least until some kind of dementia mental issue sets in)., so comparable to humans. So he will remember you breaking the jingle balls forever at this point. 2) Whether he was talking about the balls being broken or him being sad, he definitely must have been thinking about it. It's also interesting that he was upstairs talking to himself. Because he was upstairs talking to himself, I'm inclined to think he was talking about being sad. You had just walked in the door, but you had also destroyed two of the incredibly rare Jingle Balls. I think he was sad and distressed that the balls were broken, but that he's also emotionally conflicted because you were the one that broke them. Thus by you coming home prompted him to talk to himself. He's trying to be his own therapist and put his feelings into words. He's not mad that you broke his Jingle Balls. And he still loves you. But he wasn't excited to greet you because you made him really sad before you left by killing his Jingle Balls. So he didn't know what to do. He wants you to come back. But he doesn't want you to kill any more Jingle Balls. Anyway, I look forward to the happy ending.

Todd's young fan wants to know if Todd understands mistakes, and if cats make mistakes too. We have talked about mistakes and things breaking as part of being human, so I think he's curious as to cross-species implications 😊

That's another great question! I know Todd knows when he makes a mistake. When he accidently pusses a button he did not mean to I can tell right away. He gets mad and puts his ears back and then pushes the button he meant to very hard. I believe Todd knows that I would never do anything to intentionally hurt him or his feelings so I think in that way he knows it was a mistake. Also I apologized to him right away and several times so he knew I knew it was a mistake, I admitted I did it, and I was very sorry I did it. There have also been times where Todd has held on too tight when he hugs me and hurt me with his claws by accident. I tell him Todd ouch Daddy and he usually looks sorry and gives me a kiss as an apology so I think there to he is admitting he made a mistake and is sorry about it. Keep watching, young Sir, and keep asking those great questions. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks I remember reading that decades ago, a lot of really inexpensive children’s toys like doll furniture were made with pink, blue, or purple of plastic because they happened to be made of the cheapest type that a lot of factories would have. Because of that, I can’t help but think that this particular plastic smells and tastes noticeably different to animals compared to the other colors. It would also explain why that color combo is hard to find, ie, it was possibly phased out by a lot of companies once prices came down for plastic in general.

I know they have a very good long term memory. I used to keep Todd's prescription immune boosting treats in a drawer in my desk for a short time until a got a secure box for them. He loves them and remembers them being in there even though he knows they're in a box now. But still to this day if I open that drawer he comes running to and wants to check to make sure there are none in there anymore. Also on one of the foster kitten channels I watch a very young kitten saw a bug on the outside window glass and everyday after would go and check to see if it was there.

I believe that was intention and interesting. Todd knows that multiple button pushes on the same button means an increase in need, desire, or length of time depending on the button pushed. I think he also uses that as a shout. So would an non-activation be a sad whisper???

He tried to jump on his window perch one day, missed and smacked his chin really hard. He ran over to me and his look was exactly the same as Todds. I knew that if he were able to cry he would have done.

This was most revealing. I agree Todd is processing an event that upsets him. It is almost as if he is having a jingleball funeral. He did seem to look toward the stairs when he pressed Ouch, as if you could hear it from downstairs. It does make some sense that Todd can use the buttons to think. You are home and soon to come upstairs and Todd may be focusing on his sadness in prep to see you, so you can join him in this thing that bothers him so much. He knows you will join him in his feelings. What this seems to show us is that the buttons are not just tools for him to ask you for responses, but now a means for Todd to express his feelings to himself. We will all look forward to the promise of a happy development!

This is so sad. I remember something I prized that got destroyed in a catastrophic way. I mourned it for more than a week and felt gut-punched. I see that kind of thing in Todd's actions. The video will be out Sunday. These animals with their special toys, nothing else will do other than that toy. When Glamour was a kitten on her first Christmas she climbed the tree and claimed a plush frosty ornament. It was her special toy and she carried it everywhere and even slept with it. When I saw how much it meant to here I took the other three that were in the set and set them aside for her as replacements. It took about 7 years before all 3 were lost or destroyed and try I as might I could not find anymore or a suitable replacement. She has never had a special toy since and I hate that for her. I don't what that to happen to Todd too.
