I would build an elevated track to drop the ball onto and let it travel down onto the green on its own rather than having someone putt it that brings more variables into play
@DefenderTIM

Take a look at Mr. Shortgame's putter fitting video--he's about as consistent as it gets. Which leads to my next thought: if human variability introduces more error than weighting and marking the balls can resolve then doing so would seem to have no practical value. It's like 8K home televisions: the degree of refinement exceeds the limits of perception.

Watching the balls approach the cup, many of the balls curving away to the left turned back toward the cup in the last foot or so. Something else was affecting the roll at that point. I'm guessing the floor isn't totally level, or the carpet fibres were influencing the ball as it slowed. The other thing to consider is that, if there is ANY balance point influence at all, it will be multiplied on an actual breaking putt as gravity will magnify the mass differential effect. I'd love to see you take these onto a green, perhaps with a stimpmeter.

Line piles on carpet can very easily guide a golf ball rolling slow on it.

The Wilson true ball of year's ago used this test in there marketing campaign. Really showed how of center every one else's balls were. If I remember right Titleist even tried suing them due to their test data showing how off line unbalanced cores and layers rolled in lab tests. They used a stem meter to get perfect release eliminating human variable.

As a bowling ball creator expert I can tell you when a golf ball isn't balanced it makes a massive difference on drives. I used one circle line down, line across then line sideways with the same ball and man o man-was the reactions completely different. One caused a huge slice repeatedly. Another caused the ball to knuckle and the last caused it to rise higher. Always balance your ball. If you spin a ball 3x and the line changes constantly then the ball is perfectly balanced. If the line comes up the same every time-it's horrible. 99 percent of balls made are terribly balanced. Most of the time this has to do with the core of the ball foam density is off center. All golf balls are never balanced tested because it would cost them a fortune to fix it.

Callaway Chrome balls have the fact they test for the center of each ball. I have this done with the balls I game, using Espon salts. I just put a sharpe dot on the balls that are out of balance with a circle, the mark the lines through this. Tee shots make sure the balls spins over the the dot. I have never worried about putting my club greens a punched 6 months of the year, water logged the other 6. 🙄

Dave Pelz wrote about this in his book Putting Bible book from the 90's. This isn't anything new. There are stories of Hogan checking his balls in the late 40's and 50's. 20 years ago, I would get around 8 on the average out of a dozen Pro V1 that were balanced. Non balanced balls, the same spot comes up to the top.

You can certainly learn from it. If it veers off it’s because the ball is out of balance the the weight is pulling it to one side. Think of a bowling ball with shifted mass. Also the faster it settles the more influence the out of balance has.

Nice test I've did this both ways water and the check n go. The check n go comes out way better I believe it's because of rpm in the spin.
@ddeboy002
@ddeboy002 6 ай бұрын
this is simple physics. yes it makes a huge difference. Your put distance is way too short to prove the point. Bowlers will rpm the ball about 300-500. You're only talking about 30 rolls to the cup. The proof isn't there yet. Make a floor with liquid that's 100' long. Make sure it is level then repeat this test. Now on grass the grass besides the ball will have a little affect, but the pros are cut so short it's almost table top. I rolled glue then felted my testing area and yes ball balance does make a huge difference with longer puts. Your put is too short to disprove your point.

There's a video of Gurin Rife using 'spun' golfballs to test evnroll putters. Great watch if you can find it, and slightly more scientific in nature. Spoiler alert, he won't test a putter without having the golfball tested for balance.

Very cool test..I thought it seemed when the heavy side was opposite to you carpets break the ball seem to not break and when on the break side seems to turn a touch more. And I think at Brysons or any pga playing level its definately worth knowing before you put a ball in play.

At the Club Champions that I got fitted at for my putter they had a little pendulum where they put the ball on the same little dot on putting mat and they would pull it back which had the face centered on it and drop it into the ball to make it roll with either the toe up toe down or flat! In the late 1980s my mother bought me a device for balancing the golf ball where you put the ball in it and turned it on and it would spin. And as it was spinning you would take a marker and put it through a little hole on the side of it where you would find the center of gravity where it would put a line all the way around the ball. I still have it and it still works!

Test setup is wrong. Ball must be fully submerged without touching any glass. You have to play around with adding salt or water to obtain that.

You probably need to do this for all balls. And using a putting computer and high speed camera analysis. It can be done but likely very time consuming. And probably varies on each run of manufacture. The computer will remove the variable / account for the variability of the putter putting. Face position etc.

I have large hands and mid size grips are just a little too small, I want to go +2 on some UTx Corded, but I want to make sure thats possible before I order them...? Dave Pelz mentioned this test in his book Putt Like The Pros, which came out in the late 1980s. I did this to my golf balls myself after reading it in his book, and all the balls I tested were out of balance, especially the balata balls. Today's golf ball manufacturing techniques are much better, so I don't think it's necessary to test balls like this anymore.

I did this test 45 years ago lengthwise on my pool table. Heavy/light side would hit the end of the side rail on a straight shot down the middle. Hitting on a vertical axis, the ball would go straight. Probably not a factor now with improved ball tech. Some of my test balls back then had a wound core 😳😂

Next question--what effect, if any, does the out-of-balance factor have on ball flight? Does it make a difference, heavy side up vs heavy side down, on launch angle? When you eliminate the friction of a putting surface, any effect would be more extreme, I think... Of course, there's also the possibility, especially on premium balls, that the manufacturer has already figured out how much weight discrepancy can be present without significant impact on performance and they're removing the seriously out-of-balance balls during quality control. With the float test, even a few milligrams will be enough to pull one spot on the ball to the bottom, but wouldn't actually have much effect on the ball in other conditions.
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 7 ай бұрын
Would like to do that but I don't know how to run that test. Can't do it in the studio because we need full ball flight to see results. Also would need a robot or super consistent golfer, and then a whole bunch of balls and a private range. If anyone has access to all this, let me know.

Check out the Golfworks Ralph Maltby doing this on KZbin. When doing this test once you find the sweet spot on the ball. Place the one and only dot on the ball facing up towards the sky. When struck while driving the ball, iron play or putting th3 ball will always stop with the dot facing up towards the sky. It works if done right. There is water salt ratio to the mix and The Golfworks sells the kit.
