If someone needs to illustrate what the core of the story is but you still were swept up in the story prior then surely that can't be fundamental to it being a story. Hidden meaning can Accentuate but never make a story

@@osas2888 All I can say is that although I analyze stories all the time, all that fell by the wayside and I was absorbed in the power of the images, action, music. It's the mark of a good film - when you stop analyzing!

I love how grace and nature are so juxtaposed. The mother is seen IN nature all the time, but represents "Grace". While the father signifies "Nature", but is seen working in the most "unnatural" cold space of The Plant. Jack is also shown to work in a "unnatural" workplace once grown, and I think I remember Terrence Malick showing us a tree that’s in a large concrete planter right outside Jack’s work. I think the tree basically tells you the whole theme in one image. Nature contained in an unnatural place.

Hey Tyler, You talked a lot about Dan Harmon's Story Circle on your channel. Is there something called symmetry in each section of the Story Circle? Like how Points 1,2,3 & 4 are symmetrical to Points 5,6,7 & 8 resp.. Can you elaborate on the idea of symmetry in the Story Circle? Like how each section of the story contrasts or foreshadows the opposite section. And how to apply that in our writing practice.

Tree Of Life has a far more conventional structure than most of his films and that is probably why it is one of the most resonant. There are heaps of great films that don't follow tradition story structure but they're usually made my genius level talents. It's probably best to stick to the basic rules unless you're certain you're also a genius. As they say, you gotta know the rules before you break them.

Great. The nature/grace conflict is thematized in the Creation sequence when one dinosaur doesn't follow through with its natural impulse to kill but instead steps away in a seeming act of grace.

I will start by thanking you so much for the wonderful stuff you are doing it has helped me tremendously and I owe you my heartfelt gratitude. The next thing I want to say may sound like an advise, but it’s just my opinion regarding this video. Please don’t go down the road of trying to prove your Story Circle theory to anyone because it works and I for one have learnt so much from it. Sometimes you just have to hear criticisms and ignore them because reacting to some criticisms only bring out our vulnerabilities that gives our critics ammunition to further attack. Just focus on showing the utility of your framework and those of us that are your disciples and Dan’s are ready to follow you to the end. You are truly not your eloquent and confident self when you react to criticisms like is the case with this video. Thanks man and remain blessed.

Hey Tyler, I know this might seem a little dumb to you.. but can you elaborate the difference between a story and a screenplay. And most importantly when/how do I know if I have a complete story (I meant entire story outline or synopsis) before attempting to write a screenplay. Like for me, I cannot start a screenplay without having a complete story synopsis or outline or any complete information as to what I want to write. But everytime I get to the point where I think that I got the entire ouline or info or synopsis right, I eventually realize that I don't have much to start a screenplay. I need to know where to draw the line. Like when can stop worrying about the ouline or synopsis and just start the screenplay. Can you please make a video on the topic for clarifying this particular query. I hope you'd consider my request. 🙂

you know what would help? and, i mean, really help. like, help, like, a lot? i'm going to try and help, so... you could do these tips, ok? * (1... ) download or find free screenplays of popular movies. then watch the movies. then read the screenplay. then you WATCH THE MOVIE in pieces WITH THE SCREENPLAY. this will help you understand how you enjoy the pace of particular movies, and how the scenes are constructed. if you print out the screenplay, you can take lots of notes. maybe you have an app and a touch tablet with a stylus that can help you mark up pdf documents. but handwritten notes will work fine too; the only downside is that you have to reference it back to a script, which can be annoying and tedious. * (2...) you can also look at plays and tv shows after you become more comfortable with the screenplays for movies. scripts are designed differently for all three, and even movies themselves have their scripts focus on different things according to genre. the purpose of this is to help give you an idea of production. as a WRITER, you are free to write whatever you want. as a PRODUCER/ DIRECTOR/ ACTOR/ CREW, you have to bring to life what is on the script. each narrative beat in your head that you may think about for less than a few seconds could result to days or months of work, and you have to realize that thousands to millions of dollars are invested for movie ideas. i am assuming that you want to SELL your scripts, but you have to realize what kind of product you are making. you have to be able to know WHO you are selling it to, and what kind of projects that they might be interested in. * (3...) it is ok to make a script FOR FUN. it's ok if your script SUCKS BALLS. and it's ok if other people judge it as worthless, a joke, or even a waste of time. because if you want to do this... you are going to have to be able to fall a couple times before you can stand, walk, and hopefully run. there are people who love skateboarding that have had people laugh at their dreams, and they persevere to become heroes to people who watch them at events or through tv. if your effort isn't perfect, that's FINE. because hopefully you don't forget that this effort is not your GOAL. this is PRACTICE. this is NOTHING. this is an afternoon basketball game with friends. it will come and go. you are not aiming for this script to make you rich and famous. you are aiming to use this script to make you stronger and sharper. it is your stepping stone, not your pedestal. ... so. to sum up. 1) find scripts online of well known movies that you want to review, and review it bit by bit. lots of pausing and writing or typing. 2) try to understand the production process of the medium that you are thinking about writing a script for, and, once you get a hang of it, you can start looking into what the actual industry is buying. 3) you're just starting to learn? then you are going to suck. don't let it hurt your feelings. because, if you are aiming for the f***ing olympics (aka hollywood), then you better put your time in. because it's a cesspool of exploitation and nepotism, where only the hungriest of sharks survive by shoving their elbows against others. but you could still write for fun. or even make your own movie. i actually recommend making your own movie or short film. it will give you a faster idea of what kind of screenplay can be reasonably produced. and "produced" is the key word here, but, really, "fun" is also a pretty important part of the equation. no one really wants to do it unless it's fun... because we aren't getting paid millions to do all this work. but if you don't want to do all this... it's totally fine. just stop asking. because you're just asking for attention then. did this make sense? did i answer your question?

Nature and grace is the POV of the mother. That doesn't automaticaly mean Nature is the father and Grace is the mother, for me. The father is really not representing Nature. He represents someone against Nature & Grace which are identified as the mother. The conflict is between the father and the mother, for the children.

In your next video, can you talk about the recent glorification / hyper-empowerment of female characters? I don't mean to go woke or be red-pillians whatever, as a long time Hollywood viewer there seems to be a lack of clear explanation as to why that's happening. I'll provide examples. Marvel is creating only female characters with Disney, and most of their diverse representation Pakistani Superheroe, Israel Superhero, Indian Superhero, are all young women. None of them are boys or men. Another recent examples are Don't Worry Darling, which claims to have talked about patriarchy but it's full of shit. How the men 'going to work' part was so romanticized to be easy when in real life, men risked their health and bodies to work during the earliest time to provide. While their wives - in the movie - were spending their husbands money and having all the time to themselves - they're the ones actually oppressed? Another recent example is Black Panther 2, it's prequel being dedicated to black men and boys but now every male character in that film is potrayed negative light, while the women takes the shot again. I don't see negativity in female empowerment, but why does every film has to be so anti-male, potraying them in negative light and the female characters - however villainous or flawed - are always potrayed in a complicated sense as to not hold all the blame?
