Happy Caturday! 😻 This video is all about hyperthyroidism and cats (and before anyone asks, Puppy does NOT have it and fingers crossed he will never have it)! Have you ever experienced a fur baby who was diagnosed with this disease? How did you find out, and did you manage to cure it? Let us know!

Yes, my cat (not a fur baby) was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. The vet prescribed him with hormone medication that is put into his ear every day (supposedly for the rest of his life). We feed him a diet of homemade food and a small amount of dry food (will have to check on iodine levels and fish derived ingredients). Thanks for the informative lead on iodine - very helpful info the vet did not clue us in on. Going to take him back to the vet with this article. The prescription is not helping and our other cats groom Ty Bear so their ingestion of this stuff is concerning.

My cat who I have owned for 12 years has become very skinny. I am no longer able to afford taking him to the vet as I am 77 and on a fixed income and am paying off a hospital bill I incurred when I broke my Femur last year. Vet bills are so ridiculous anymore, I feel they really take advantage of pet owners. I will try making him food myself and seeing if that helps him. I feel very sad about the whole situation.

Mine got it from yearly vaccinations forced by our landlord. Missouri requires every three years and vets said it to, but we tried getting vets to intervene, but they would not. We preferred titer testing every two years, but no titer testing was allowed at any rental places in state law and rental policies. No home owner has vaccinate , but renters do. My cats got food allergies, dust mites allergies, flea allergies, one got hyperthyroidism. Soon after the second shot, and we tried telling the vets and land lord, but no one wanted hear us out. We stopped having pets, until we get another place. We can talk with new people about non mammal pets. Not sure even having turtle , because we still have to deal with vets in our area. They area malpractice. We wish had the money to move out of mid west in America. No state takes titer testing , after first vaccinations. I know after these humans die, they will be punished for causing harm to others.

that is absolutely wild. i’m in the south and we have to maintain rabies and such but beyond that, no one (DEFINITELY not landlords!?) is checking CAT VACCINATIONS i mean good lord! that is patently absurd…. even living in nyc i’ve never had any sort of legal requirement except to let landlord know there’s a pet. wow. would never have guessed that policy was even possible, and definitely didn’t expect the MIDWEST ! truly do not understand how these legislators mandating such nonsense can talk out both sides of their mouth throwing around the term “free country” like that has any meaning in a place where the cat vax police can force medical decisions on your animals for the crime of being a renter 🙄

Turns out, he was RIGHT! At age 5, our little Snickers just got bloodwork back with a "high normal" T4 level. I'm SO on this, and I'm about to head over to your other video with the raw food recipe. I'm not sure anyone will see this and I can't find anything about this particular behaviour online, but we took in an old stray who has hyperthyroidism, she's on meds and her blood tests came back showing that her thyroid levels were normal. That's all good but she will not stop yowling for food. She wants to be fed half a packet every 2 - 3 hours, she's eating us out of house and home haha! I'd usually say she was just being a brat but the yowling and screaming isn't for attention and she eats everything we give her. She stuck her little paws under my door this morning at 5am when I locked her out out of desperation (after only feeding her an hour prior) and she spent 20 minutes rattling my door and screaming. I get no sleep... save me

My older cat has ALL the symptoms you listed but I’m not willing to put him on synthetic meds just so he can deal with those side effects. I’m currently feeding him Petsmart Authority wet food whenever he cries for food just to get some healthy food in him. I’ve already noticed a huge difference. He’s not crying as much, is satiated longer and has less diarrhea. Seemed like everything he eat went right through him which meant he was getting zero nutrients. Once my meat grinder comes in this week, it’s nothing but a raw homemade diet for him and his siblings. Chicken thighs, chicken hearts and chicken liver.

Cookie my beautiful rescued female cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism on Friday 😥. Thankfully I asked the vet to take some blood tests for her kidney, liver and thyroid function and they found the disease. It was found early and she is only 7, showing no physical signs, as she has had weight gain issues for a while but noticed she was vocalising, drinking more water than usual, hungry all the time and starting to loose weight on her hips and her back legs were becoming weak. Cookie is on small tablets once daily. I put the tablet in a smallish piece of raw meat and she seems to be none the wiser as to a pill being inside it. The pill goes in a variety of meats and even in chunks of Advance premium cat food ok. She has never eaten a lot of seafood and was mostly raw fed, with commercial raw BPA free cans, but they are high in Iodine, as contain kelp. So she is on the best food, wet food I can afford. Species appropriate premium. No side effects thankfully. Lost one tablet, but otherwise all good. Thanks for this video. It helps. Watching from Tassie.

I would love to hear about dust from cat litter and litter box deodorant powders causing bad effects. I had to move from a house into an apartment building with my 3 cats. My litter boxes used to be in the basement with a LOT more ventilation. Now they are in a little enclosed tiny room with the laundry and there is no where for the dust to go. 😥 One of my cats just got diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism two days ago.

@@sdevarenne28 I’m so sorry to hear about that. The video and a lot of these comments seem very helpful. But of course you should still check with your vet before trying any of these suggestions. Meanwhile, try using a portable HEPA air filter in the room. Also litter that is Not made from clay, corn cobs or pine pellets may be a better option. Crystal litter is composed of amorphous silica gel granules and is virtually dust free. It’s lightweight and absorbs odors and moisture well. Although it cost considerably more money, it may be worth it.😺💕

My Teddy is 8 and was just diagnosed with hyperthyroid. We were going to do the radio active iodine route, but for now we are using the medicine we rub on the ear flap. Only on day 2. Thank you for the informative video. On a side note we used to feed only raw for at least a year or so to our three mixing it up ourselves which was a giant job, but we thought it was worth it and adding the necessary other nutrients ............. We got giardia out of the blue as did the cats. We had not been camping, we had not been drinking water from outside puddles :) the cats have never been outside........ All went on Flagyl which was a nightmare at least for we humans and the cats were at the vet for 5 days of treatment. The Vet could only attribute the outbreak to the raw chicken so we discontinued and it's been 2 years and no problems. Just a thought.
@JustMe-mn4gr
@JustMe-mn4gr 5 жыл бұрын
Allopathic vets are spooky about raw diets so they are liable to blame raw food for everything they can't otherwise explain. It sounds to me like when giardia is from food sources, it's from uncooked produce like lettuce, etc. Also can be from food handlers spreading it when they are infected themselves. From mayo clinic online: The most common way to become infected with giardia is after swallowing contaminated water. Giardia parasites are found in lakes, ponds, rivers and streams worldwide, as well as in municipal water supplies, wells, cisterns, swimming pools, water parks and spas. Ground and surface water can become contaminated from agricultural runoff, wastewater discharge or animal feces. Children in diapers and people with diarrhea may accidentally contaminate pools and spas. Giardia parasites can be transmitted through food - either because food handlers with giardiasis don't wash their hands thoroughly or because raw produce is irrigated or washed with contaminated water. Because cooking food kills giardia, food is a less common source of infection than water is, especially in industrialized countries. You can contract giardiasis if your hands become contaminated with fecal matter - parents changing a child's diapers are especially at risk. So are child care workers and children in child care centers, where outbreaks are increasingly common. The giardia parasite can also spread through anal sex.

I don’t know for sure that my cat has hyperthyroidism. But he was vomiting and got very skinny. I switched his food to Blue Wilderness, both wet and dry, which is grain free. He is still thin after two months, but not so thin, and he hasn’t vomited since. I would highly recommend Blue Wilderness, which is expensive, but you can get it in grocery stores. It has more fat and calories than other food, which is good, and the nutrition is very good. One good thing about high quality cat food is that they don’t need to eat a lot of it to get the 180-220 calories per day that a healthy 8-10 pound cat needs. Count the calories to be sure he’s getting enough. My cat seems happier to be off of cheap grain cat food.

@@mmeeeeooww Mine was diagnosed yesterday and I have an appointment for radioactive iodine lined up for two weeks from now. The side effects of having hyperthyroid are so serious that I don't want to let him wait. His thyroid level in the blood test was 9.3 and he doesn't yet have many behavioral symptoms. His heart rate was in the 200s during the exam, though, which is very dangerous. The radioactive iodine therapy may seem expensive but it resolves this problem almost 100% of the time with almost zero side effects (sometimes they give too much and the thyroid drops too low to hypothyroid). In the long run, I131 (radioactive iodine) is probably the least expensive option. Can just set up some payment schedule or use that medical care credit card, etc, and spread the payments out. No more need to monitor, worry, no surgical risks and damage to the cat, no constant need to manage and buy drugs. Mercola pets says fish-based cat food is possibly a cause of this disease. It's only been an issue in cats for 30 years. The flame retardants in mattresses, furniture, carpet, etc, is a likely culprit as well.

Hi Jasmine! My 10 month old male kitty is currently on his 3rd week of homemade raw food (using feline nutrition recipe). Previously he was on grain free dry & wet food and his stools are always a tad bit soft. He passed stools once to twice a day. My vet suggested to put him on RC sensitive but I wanted to try raw first to see how it goes. During the first two weeks, the result was great, his stools are dry, the volume significantly decreases, and virtually has no odor. However, earlier this week his stool started to become soft again, however the volume and odor doesn’t change compared to the first two weeks. This morning, I found a small drop of blood outside his stools. I haven’t contacted my vet yet since she’s not pro-raw and probably will prescribe RC or Hill’s to my cat. The raw food he eats this week is from the same batch like what he ate during the first two weeks. He just got dewormed around 3 weeks ago. He’s been eating, sleeping, and playing as per usual, very energetic. Should I be concerned with the drop of blood on his stool? I’m scared it’s salmonella or any other pathogens 🙁 Thanks before Jasmine, really appreciate your insight on this.

Hi hiquirkyalice! Since I am not a vet I suggest consulting with yours if you have any serious concerns about your kitty's health. Though, it does seem like a great sign that his behavior and appearance are all normal and energetic. I am not sure how you were able to detect a drop of blood outside his stools (unless maybe you're micro-monitoring each time he voids in the litter box?) But at least the vet can do some testing or take a sample to ensure it isn't anything serious or threatening to your babies health and give you peace of mind :) hope that helps!

Better than average, and I'm glad you found the article about Dr. Peterson. However, there are some flaws in your presentation that mostly resolve around one little known factor. While the vast majority of cats with a high T4 have an almost always benign tumor (which is what forces the overproduction), it is possible for the T4 and Free T4 to be slightly high without a tumor. Most vets still think this is impossible, but Dr. Peterson documented such non-thyroid spikes back around 2016. There is no direct connection between food/iodine intake and developing a tumor, but food may play a factor in the non-thyroid spikes. (And soy may be bigger in that than iodine.) When a diagnosis is borderline, it becomes critical to determine if there is a tumor since it can affect treatment options. (Doing the 131 if there is no tumor would destroy the healthy thyroid tissue.) The whole discussion can get rather lengthy, but if you want to follow up, you might join the group Hyperthyroid Cats on Facebook or get in touch with me directly.

If you have a cat who is being sick on a regular basis while being given carbizamole / similar, it is because he / she is allergic to it. Transdermal medicine will almost certainly work very well in this situation - all you need to do is find a pharmacist to provide the medication and if you live in a part of the world where it is not readily available, a pharmacist can easily make it from crushed-up tablets. My cat nearly died from carbizamole tablets but transdermal medication really works.

Hi. Great video thanks. One of my Tabby cats has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. It is almost a year for vets to recognize it. My cat is 14 years old. Finally after discovered a bump on his throat I took him to general surgeon. By the way we live in Türkiye. He had all the thyroid parameters tests. T4, TSH, T3 and total. All came out high. We started Hills y/d 2 months ago. It didn’t help. Then we started Metimazol. Even after a week of the pill his symptoms were less. If your cat screams at night it’s the first serious sign to look for thyroid. My cats always eat dry food. Not many with fish ingredient though. I would like to try home made food but not sure how their stomach would react. I still give him hills y/d with pill. Two times a day. Also he eats Royal Canin sensible he likes very much. Thyroid also affected his heart. He is taking a pill for high blood pressure also. Hope all the kitties get well soon.

What do I do when my cat HATES raw diet? I tried buying different brands of raw food but she just looks at it and gags.. :/ Like literally gags! I just put it in the bowl at first but she just ignored it second time I tried to feed it to her, she got some on her mouth and acted in disgust. She is okay with chicken heart but that's about the only food she will eat raw.

I’m pretty confused on what to actually feed. Do I make your recipes without liver? What treats can a cat have that are low iodine? I believe I caused this in my cat by giving him too many liver treats. He LOVES liver and sardines. I usually can’t get him to eat his food without topping with these items.

My cat (looks like Puppy) has just been stricken with diabetes. I have to make a bigger commitment to the raw food. I had a cat before with diabetes which I got into remission with raw food, but this one (Sammy) has not been so easy to control blood glucose levels with diet. He's got it bad and I'm going to have to try switching to nothing but a raw food diet.

Most common yet it literally took 10 different vets to try to figure my cat out in 3 years it's been awful and what a rip they take so much of your money. Oh and I want to say his eyes were going fully dilated they were pure black and he could not see and nobody could figure out why well that's your thyroid because you get high blood pressure and when cats get high blood pressure their eyes get dilated and it makes them blind it took 3 years for any vet to figure that out finally I went to one and she just casually said oh yeah that's his thyroid and I'm like what so just letting you know in case anybody else goes through this hell cuz it was hell and really really really really really really expensive

A friend has a cat that was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism after he noticed his kitty was losing so much weight but still eating a lot. His kitty is now gaining weight but still constantly looking for food and not being cuddly like she used to be.

Possibly. Has he lost any weight? My cat just got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and he went from 9lbs to 5.5lbs. He was always drinking water and would nibble very small amounts of food doing the day. I'd say the vet needs to check his T3 and T4 levels as a precaution.

@@kristymatthews7985 unfortunately there has been no change since I brought him to the Vet originally back in April. I mentioned hyperthyroidism and she snapped back at me....(THAT WAS TESTED ALREADY!). Ok....... well.... he’s not responding at all to the insulin you prescribed.... second insulin no response. Now there’s been no response from the vet. Must be nice to just want to deal with vaccinations and nail clippings and dismiss anything that requires research and direct attention. It’s 4:30 in the morning now and he’s meowing for food or drink. Not exactly good times for us anymore. It hurts to stand by any watch him suffer. Now it will be another $1200.00 in test with another Vet just to figure out where he stands. Thank you 🙏

That sounds like hyperthyroidism to me. I would definitely carry him to a vet that shows more compassion for animals. Here's what I was charged yesterday for my cat's diagnosis: Examination-$48 CompPlus Panel-$79.73 CBC-$46.98 Total T4-$52.62 Methimazole 5mg (thyroid pills)-$18.16 Clavamox Drops (infection meds for liver)-$59.43 Total:$304.92 I go to a veterinarian in Florence, SC so the prices of course won't be the same but this will give you an idea. They first drew some blood for testing which took that machine about 15mins to do and they did an ultrasound on him while the blood was being tested. The ultrasound detected an infection he had in his liver due to the high levels of T4. The blood work easily showed that his thyroid levels were not normal and so she went ahead and put him on a 1/2 pill a day of methimazole and has us coming back to see her on October 7th for another blood test to check his T4 levels again. I asked her how long would it be before I start seeing improvements and she said in 2wks. Today is the 2nd day on the pills and he's already getting his appetite back. The whole process was easy so I don't understand why they're making it difficult on you and your baby. Take a screen shot of this and take it to another vet and tell them you want his T4 checked and a ultrasound done. If his T4 is a 5 or higher, then he has hyperthyroidism. A 2.5-4 is normal and anything below 2.5 would be hypothyroidism but that's rare in cats. I hope you can find a good doctor that will give him the right help he needs.

Littering's disgusting. Other animals have to walk on that floor, and right next to your rubbish. They don't want to and shouldn't have to do that. That's selfish.
