The 36 inch rule..Hmm....I think it should, as she said be a consideration...But I would not accept it as a rule. . In my own process, the rules, mechanics and implementation in decorating come secondary to the creative process If that makes sense?! Ha Ha! You have to think it, and visualize it before you implement it. The rules and such can be figured out in the workmanship and implementation.. I trust my eye, my sense of balance, my thought process. When redoing a space whether a blank canvas or a redo, I find that rules in decorating are negotiable. Sometime rules work and sometimes they don't.. If the rules respect the space I go by the rules...but the space is king and there is no satisfaction if the rules just don't fit. If it seems wrong...it is wrong or if it seems "off"...it's off! I like your wider breathing space on your bedside tables, it works for the space... but in another smaller room, perhaps inches matter and the two inch rule would work. Your work is beautiful. The composition you create is impeccable. And your style is definitely professional caliber. Don't worry about the rules...they are just considerations or suggestions. I fill even smaller than 36 in spaces all the time. My own bedroom has two full size double closets on one wall side by side with about a two foot partition between them. The odd blank space between the closets kept bothering me until one day I stacked three pictures of my husband and two children, framed beautifully in matching antique gold frames. A broken rule for sure, but it looks "customized" like the wall was waiting for the pictures to be there. The pictures are the first thing I see when I open my eyes every morning. My first thoughts are that I'm so thankful and blessed to have my beautiful family. Yes, it definitely works in the space! Take care. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing!

You just don't know how much you have helped me!!!! I have been in my house for 6 years and I don't have any thing on the walls in my bedroom. I only have 2 pictures in my living room and I have nothing around small walls. My bed has a scalloped headboard so I am doing it like your couch. Thank you so much!!!

I love leaving a smaller wall blank but I think it depends on the room and the aesthetics of the space. Good point about your heart stopping and the thought of a blank wall. I had a client that almost fired me because I recommended a blank small wall. But the artwork on her large wall is the “star” of the room so in the end, she enjoys the empty wall and said she was glad she didn’t fire me. (I’m glad too 😂)

I'm of the school of thought that it depends more on the scale of what you want to put on the wall than the size of the wall itself that matters more. I hardly have any negative space on any walls in my home and that's the way I like it! Oh...and my night stand is well over 2" from the side of my bed and that...too...is the way I like it. Your home is beautiful.

Hello Loves! Before you refresh start with the basics. Then when you add new items you will know exactly where to place them. How do you feel about the 36" blank wall guideline? Honestly, I am still adjusting to it and it is starting to grow on me..

I love ya Barbara! I updated my pinned comment to say that I am adjusting to it. And I must admit it - if I follow this rule the focus is placed on the main art pieces and I like that.

Great info sis. When I decorate a room it's all about balance and how it feels to me in the completed space. Not really one for most interior decor rules so the 36" wall rule may not apply for me. As you know, not all walls need to be decorated but, a large enough negative spaces leaves the room unbalance and I normally add piece or gallery. Sometimes the answer is simply - don't do anything if it feels right and balanced. Especially if the room is small. In that case, a blank wall gives a feeling of space.

I think things can look nice, and pretty but also playing it safe. I like bold and a wow and thats unique occassionally. I dont want to live in a hotel look. Take a chance. Not always toned down and pretty and safe.

Basically I start with what my needs are for my family. For example: I like small furniture, but there are 4 of us so I need a table that seats 4-6. And when I shop, I try to keep my furniture finishes and room sizes in mind. Do you want me to do a video?
