This video has perfect timing. I'm getting ready to buy a used bass boat. The person who selling it has disconnected the brakes. He told me that the boat and trailer belong to his father who's no longer with us. He said that the brakes had frozen up and he took it to a shop that supposedly wanted $1,000 to fix the system. I've done trailer brakes in the past and I thought perhaps the price of the parts must have gone through the roof. I used the link in the description to go to the parts website that you suggested. I did a rough guess on what I would need in a worst case scenario. Worst case replacing everything it's still came out from under 500. And that's not even myself putting the discount code in. Thank you for this information it really helps. I was second guessing myself about buying this boat since I would need the brakes to work to pass inspection. Once again thank you and as always I make sure to hit the like button and I have already been a subscriber for a very long time. Look forward to watching your next video.

Vantage dual axle trailer that had drum brakes when I bought it used. They worked until one season they locked up, while the boat was in the water for the summer & trailer was sitting. I think only one axle had brake drums. I removed the drums and just put idler hubs on. Over the years I’ve gotten more familiar with swapping races/seals/bearings. Now it’s an annual check since I’ve lost a wheel in transit due, back roads, to never checking them. I learned the hard way. I’d like to put brakes on there again one day. Great video! #snapon

Best video I've seen on the subject. Our little 18 footer doesn't have trailer brakes but I've always wanted the peace of mind added stopping power brings. Might see if the calliper brackets can be welded on somehow vs ditching the entire axle. In any case this vid gives me the confidence to tackle it. One note about blocking stuff. Don't use those hollow cement blocks. They can disintegrate instantly when overloaded, dropping whatever is on them to the ground with zero warning. That trailer in your video won't be much risk but boats and cars are another story. Steel jack stands or heavy wooden timbers only.
@rileyshane782 жыл бұрын
Don’t do it? They last less than a year. I just took them off our robalo r200. Even if you clean the trailer religiously after every use you will only get a year or so out of them before they lock up and you can’t use the trailer at all till fixed

How is the brake fluid apportioned to give the right pressure compared to the travel in the actuator to operate the brakes efficiently yet not lock them up? I'm asking because I am contemplating making a trailer out of a chassis cab truck. I see there are various hitch types available with brake actuators in them but all seem to have a short travel compared to the foot pedal on a car which of course you control by feel. I just wonder if the travel required in the slave (wheel) cylinders of the truck will be too far to operate properly with such a short trtavel in a trailer hitch actuator. Your thoughts please. (or any one else out there) Many thanks Guy.

Most of the trailer brakes here are all mechanically actuated using sealed cables like huge bike brake cables. When one of the cables are due for a change you don't have to play around with hydraulic fluid bleeding. Most of them are also drum brakes. There are also bearing buddies for keeping the water out of the bearings for longer life expectancy. #SnapOn Thanks again top info

I used BUICK DRUMS they fit right over the original hubs mounted the backing plates if I braked too hard they would lock up with 24 ft boat on it they really worked well with car brakes. If I did it again I would matchup disk brakes to fit right over original hubs and do the same thing.

#snapon. Yup you guessed it brakes are shot on my dual axle trailer. The lines are rusted away and the axel is going have to be replaced. So the timing of your video is great. I do want to go south maybe the keys this summer with my grandson so I will have to get this job done. Any information on oil bath hubs would be great. I don't have brakes on my trailer but I used a bearing grease repacking device when I replaced my bearings a couple of years ago. This video should come in handy if we ever decide to put new brakes on. Everything is so corroded I don’t even know what I would need to replace. We’ve left it the way it is because we trailer our boat twice a year and it’s a 10 minute drive so it’s not really worth it. And how much was it for all the parts for a trailer you bought?
@axscdvfb8 ай бұрын
What’s your opinion on stainless brakes? They are so expensive? Worth it?
@BornAgainBoatingАй бұрын
I think it depends on your application and the use. If you are in saltwater and dunk the boat quite often, stainless would be a good way to go, totally way more expensive, but in the long run, it will last longer and be less problems. Also you should invest in a garden pump sprayer and mix up some saltaway and fresh water and spray them down after dunking before boating, and after reloading the boat. But if you are in fresh water and only splash a few times a year, probably not worth it for the money

Very good video with all the details , I have had many trailers and do my own service and repairs I’ve thought about putting electric brakes on a couple of trailers in the past but have not done it yet yes I’ve bought trailers with them equipped with the brakes and I’ve done my own safety checks and adjustments my brother in law is a Chef by trade not extremely mechanically advanced and he used to get Buddy Bearings installed on his trailers and pump Grease into them way to often when the trailers got warm the grease would expand and shoot his Buddy Bearings off the axles all the time they would hit the pavement spinning faster than the car tires and pass the tow vehicle on the highway ?

Well, depends on what kind you get. You don't want to get the cheap ones, get the ones that have that blue coating on there. I think there is even a better grade than these, but from what I can tell these hold up pretty well.
