He was scared of running the dog over killing or injuring him. A friend said let me help and tied a white tshirt through the wheel. Next trip, the dog latched onto it but it wrapped around his jaws and couldn't get loose. After several flips and banging his head against the ground was let free. Never chased him again.

Although the pole is a pain to carry, I can’t count how many times I’ve been so glad that I had it. I will also have to try the air horn. Aggressive off-leash dogs have caused me great distress and anguish, as they make me hesitant to engage in my favorite outdoor activities, thus reducing my quality of life. I’m hoping that you might be willing to offer any wisdom on these 2 questions: 1. What mentality am I lacking by being afraid to go outdoors for a ride because I’m afraid of being harassed by dogs? 2. How do you deal with the owners? I’ve had dog owners yell at me for swinging my pole at their dog. Thank you kindly sir, again, for making these videos and offering your wisdom.

There's nothing wrong with being afraid. Your ability to get out and ride anyway shows that you are as brave as they come. Cycling is great 99% of the time. @@truthatanycost3330 Our society has been reduced to accepting dog behaviour, in a human society! We built our western countries on the basis of human standards and laws. Not the standards of a mutant predator. Their is no excuse for dogs attacking people. Dogs are used as a drug for the socially impaired. They choose not to seek treatment but instead get some braindead mutt that only understands food and proceed to believe that it loves them. The dog begs for food (that’s all dogs ever do they are obsessed with food) they believe it’s affection but any rational thinking would lead you to the conclusion of food begging. It’s pathetic. Dogs are the most dumb creatures on this earth and are only driven by animalistic tendencies. I’ve seen videos of dogs jumping off roofs from 2 floors up just to make an attempt to attack something. One of the most recent videos I watched showed the thing jumping from two floors, falling and certainly breaking bones, whining, barking and running away from the ground where it fell. People are so delusional these days they actually believe an animal so stupid is capable of love and human emotions. Dogs don’t show remorse, they don’t love. In future it will be classified as a mental illness to be so obsessed with dogs that you value them over fellow members of your own species. Thanks! I have been and continue to get attacked so often that I have a plan for most scenarios. I would use spray in certain situations. But, it doesn't work that great because cycling is inherently windy. Wind can blow that spray back in your face and totally miss the dog. It can also get on your fingers and in your eyes.... especially on a long, hot, sweaty ride. The canister can also explode in the heat, which can also happen with the airhorn, so keep that in mind..... In your situation, you were probably really caught off guard. It may have worked to quickly stop your bike and yell "no!". There are just so many possibilities of how it can go and the safest thing you can do is to prepare for everything concieveable that you could run into.

After that I started getting off the bike to quell the chase instinct (it usually worked), and use the bike as a shield... and later found out that that could be a crime if it doesn't quell the chase instinct and I do end up having to defend myself, because I didn't try to flee. Even though my average speed is about 10mph. They will literally make it out like I can do over 30mph on a Rohloff equipped touring bike and claim the Rohloff is a motor and that I am fast because I could do 18 miles in an hour and 50 minutes due to a tail wind during the first part of the ride. And the owners will claim it would never run into the road at me as long as I am on the bike. And running at me and barking isn't aggression, it's just "excitement". These freaks will lie up ANYTHING to make someone else guilty for what their unrestrained dog causes. I cannot even consider that fact that I am on a road that people go quite fast down, and me swerving over the road to deal with the dog could cause a traffic incident if someone hits me or swerves around me. as a German Biologist - it is the incompetent Owner creating such ugly situations - that even KILL persons. When ever I am on my Bicycle approaching any dog - leashed or not - I STOP, get off the Bike and slowly pass the Dog. Many Dogs are terrified of reckless Bikers creating a Trauma PTSD event in the Dog. The Dog Owner often is not even aware of that. So we need to be ALL careful. I'm able to hold my air horn and point it at the dog when I activate it. You wouldn't be able to direct a handlebar mounted horn at the dog. Therefore, it would be less effective. A horn is only a 1st line if defense. Be ready for it to fail and have a second and even third line of defense too.

A while back I had to move from the suburbs, where people learn to keep their dogs in yards, to a small town in E. TN, where I was riding down roads like this with large properties that have unrestrained dogs running at/after me. I never did get bit. There were a couple of times that a dog running after me almost got hit by a car coming the other way. A few times I would encounter a hill so steep I’d have to get off and walk. Most dogs just make a lot of noise, especially if I’m just walking by and not riding. But you never know. That air horn seems to work really well at stopping them in their tracks, even though yours sounded kind of weak compared to air horns I’ve heard before. I wish I had thought of that when I was out, I’m back in the suburbs now. I did bring along some pepper spray, but never used it. I rode by many places that had horses too. Only once did a horse ever come running across from the barn on a hill far away, up to the fence, to see who I was. Most horses don’t even look up. I had never seen one come running across the yard just like the dogs. It was friendly though. And the dogs were just noisy. In one spot, it was a small front yard with a man sitting out front. When his dog came after me, as it had done several times before, I stopped and yelled at the man about the lawsuit that would follow from any bites I might get from his dog. He was probably surprised to even see someone on a bike pass his house. Given how hilly the area was, bicyclists were not that common!

Thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds like your encounters were pretty average. But, every now and then I encounter dogs that will definitely bite and packs of dogs (usually around the meth. Labs in Callisburg TX) that will kill.

This is bizarre to me. Your video makes it look like nearly everyone has aggressive dogs running out on the road. This is rare around here (Washington state) Most people in our area keep their dog behind a fence. I think 2 times in my life I have been attacked while riding a bike and I'm 54. Do you not have laws in TX about keeping your dogs in your yard?
@aaroncitius1111 ай бұрын
We have laws that we can defend ourselves when attacked. So, here in Texas dogs can run free and if they do attack then they sometimes get hurt or are killed by people defending themselves. Most people who let their dogs run free don't value them at all. They may feed them periodically because they were dumped in the area... It's usually hard to tell who owns them and they often carry rabies and other deadly diseases.

I was riding my bike in a rural area and a huge Rottweiler came after me. I tried to outrun it but couldn’t. I jumped off and put the bike between me and the dog. The owner probably thought it was funny and did nothing. Until he saw me draw my pistol then he came running off the porch trying to call his dog off. Dog went back to the owner and I had strained my knee. If that dog had grabbed me I would have shot it.
@aaroncitius112 жыл бұрын
You don't have to wait for it to grab you. If you fear for your safety, then you can shoot it and probably should. Just be sure to do a quick visual sweep behind the dog before you shoot to make sure you minimize the chance of collateral damage.

Cattle prod works well for highly aggressive dogs like pitbulls determined to get you... I used to have pitbulls guarding my rural property - only a cattle prod would stop them. I had a pack of pitbulls - I had them trained in off property manners so they'd quit in the person held still. I got rid of them due to the pit determination to escape the full property fencing (over under through).
@mysticbengals5212 жыл бұрын
@The Great Pumpkin a cattle prod is better than spray and not that costly. They sell them on Amazon and other places. A good spray costs about the same and if the wind goes towards you you'll get to get mauled while you are blind to boot

This is my everyday problem too. I use my electric scooter as my primary transportation to work or market (manageable distance, cant afford car) and everyday this dogs on street would suddenly jump out from where they are and start chasing me. 😭 But thankfully they would chase me and bark at me for few seconds then stops on their own. But I will try different methods including this to see how it works. Just hate that so many people let their dogs lose without a care that they could scare or harm someone even indirectly like how I see a cyclist tried to swerve immediately to the right to avoid the dogs sudden appearance while there's a car coming by just few feet behind him. I hope those owners who let their dogs like these gets chased by random dogs on street multiple times too so they will know how it feels.

Why are there so many loose dogs? That's worrying! I live in the UK, I cycle all round the countryside where I live, there are some very rural areas and I have only once been chased by a loose dog in the suburbs of my city. I stopped, phoned the police and they were there in 10 minutes. They take that kind of thing very seriously in case a child gets attacked or even killed. When the dog is caught it will be impounded and, if the owner can be traced, they are often prosecuted.

The air horn and the stick are good ideas. Cattle prod works well too.... I keep dogs on my property for defense but I have a fully fenced parcel to keep them in. I'm steadily working on increasing fence height to 8 ft. The front is 8 ft, the back is 8 ft, one long side same, I have 3/4 of the wood posts in to raise the other long side to 8 ft.. I am not on a traveled road either - I'm way off grid.... The original fence is 5 ft which is a lot more than most in the area have.. I don't understand people who have their dogs loose.
