This is a video about the dog breed Finnish Lapphund, from the www.naturallyhappydogs.com website.
Elaine Short has had Finnish Lapphunds since 1996. She both shows and breeds them; and is the current club secretary.
Finnish Lapphunds have a thick, double coat to enable them to handle the extremely cold temperatures of their native country of Finland. Surprisingly, their coat helps to protect them from the heat too. They were originally bred to herd reindeer. They enjoy a good run and still have a strong urge to chase wildlife.
Finnish Lapphunds are intelligent, people-oriented dogs so Elaine would caution against someone taking on this breed if they were likely to be out of the house for too many hours a day.

Excellent dog! We have one. Freddie is smiling 24/7. He sleeps on the balcony at night. Even if it's freezing. He is great with the whole family but he doesn't want us to give any attention to our other dog. He wants it all! He is so good with the other dog and the cat is his best friend.

I miss my lappie. She had to be put down about a year ago at 12 years old because of lung tumors. But she was a really good dog. Lappies are extremely intelligent, gentle and curious. Easily motivated by food and affection, and they are not deterred by cold, rain or wind. Ideal for a family with an active lifestyle. Though, my lappie got increasingly lazy as she got older.

A Finn here. Just had to say that I disagree with her opinion on lapphunds needing a person constantly there or needing a yard. I know several of them who live in appartment buildings with just a balcony and they do just fine. In the cold winter time, they'll even be happy to lay around in the balcony by themselves. Sure they need exercise, but they have no problem being home alone for the normal work hours like many other breeds.

thats actually the same for all breeds of dogs. no dog needs a garden. a garden does nothing if you walk them 3 times a day as you should. u could easily have a big dog in a small apartment. the only thing a dog should do at home is sleep. also, u cant really say 'this breed can stay alone' etc because this always depends on training. a dog isnt born to know that you will come back and he can relax. you always have to train your dog to be alone

My family has 3. One is 13, other 7 and one is about a year old. Great fun dogs. Good for families and they are very smart. Teach em young, hold on to The training and they Will know it through their life. To add to the family part, if they are arround kids when they grow up, they will deal with them nicely, as long as the kids treat them right. On general, they are healthy dogs, not many diseases run on this species. They do require a lot of human contact, especially on the first year.

Yep, this is similar to barrel racing horses. Propably cause reindeer are alot less docile than other herd animals in general, and do stampedes. So these guys have to be pretty resilient to being kicked/able to dodge them. I've seen once these guys used with reindeer during gathering, their herding style is more hunting behaviour than other herd dogs. They chase and egg on the stampede, so the reindeer get confused and easier to gather when they go to a small defensive circle, anyway very interesting breed for its multi use.

i'm planning on getting my first dog in 2 years. it will be either a finnish lapphund, aussie, sheltie or collie. or a chodsky pes. it's so difficult to pick one that would be best for me. lapphunds are quite common here bc i live in sweden. my mom thinks a lapphund will be the best, but my favorite is aussie. i know she is right though. a lapphund would be better as a first dog
@Mx199D
@Mx199D Жыл бұрын
I would not get an Aussie as a first dog to be honest. They are VERY high energy and can be easily frustrated when you do not give them sufficient exercise/stimulation and show destructive behavior. Obviously I don’t know your lifestyle and you might be out and about all day and take your dog with you, but from my experience they do not fare well if you are working from 9 to 5 and can’t give them lots of stimulation. I spend about 5 hours a day exercising with my Aussie and if I don’t she can get a little agitated/bored. Just putting it out there because I know they have become a very popular breed but people often do not really know what to expect.

Lappies will hover nearby when off leash, it's in their temperament to watch over their pack. However, many lappies (including mine) are extremely curious and may have a tendency for wanderlust, so training is definitely recommended. Luckily, they are very easy to train and eager to please, my dog could be kept outside without a fence or leash, she'd just sit and watch passers by curiously.
@hhhhhhhhB
@hhhhhhhhB 4 жыл бұрын
Mine is fairly good off leash although they do (especially mine) have a strong prey drive and are still used as hunting dogs in Scandinavia (especially on moose, badger and bear). What I mean is that they will go after animals but is rather easy to call back with training.

These are extremely rare outside of Finland and Scandinavia, so unless you have background proof, it's very unlikely your dog is a lapphund or lapphund cross. If you're in America, Chow crosses are common, and there are many ways a dog could look like a lapphund (American eskimo cross, Pomeranian crossed with something bigger, etc.).

These dogs would do fine anywhere in Canada, as long as they're acclimated (not taken straight from Florida to Quebec in December, obviously). It gets down to -30 celsius in Lapland, with the record cold being -50 in both Finland and Sweden.

@Michael Smith Uh, "true arctic work dogs?". That's exactly what Finnish lapphunds are, they were originally bred for hunting and herding reindeer in Finnish Lappland, which is in the arctic circle. On the herding trips they often used to sleep in the snow, which is why they have such a thick and heavy fur.

@@thelipstickchick5426 Well I definitely think that it IS unreasonable to have malamutes, huskies or any kind of northern dogs with a very thick, dense fur in such warm countries. I have a husky that lives indoors, and even here in Finland she is often noticeably hot (panting, looking for a cooler place to sleep) in normal room temperature, also in winter. Dogs like lapphunds, huskies, malamutes etc are northern dogs that enjoy and thrive in a cold climate, my dog absolutely loves snow and could spend hours just playing in the snow or running on the ice of our nearby lake. The colder it gets, the more excited she is to go outside. So I think it's unfair to get an arctic dog like a lapphund, if they are never even going to see snow. :( There's so many breeds to choose from, so why pick one that is specifically meant for a cold climate, just for your own enjoyment? Just my opinion...
