its not so much that she wants to be picked up as it is that she wants the scary thing to just leave. with small dogs sometimes you do need to pick them up just to prevent them from getting hurt. ive had to pick my dog up because someone decided to let their out of control large dog off leash and ofc they like to go for my dog.

@@Pea_Green Angus just looks like a sweetheart, doesn't he? I've had a purebred dachshund and a dachshund/beagle mix who had a decidedly doxie body type and temperament. And you're right -- they know no fear. In their minds, they're no smaller than any other dog, and can't understand why people laugh at their barking at, say, Great Danes.
