Leaving aside the inevitable MiG/F-18 fanboyism, this was wonderfully filmed and edited together. I wish more aviation films were being made - there hasn't really been anything all that good for the past three or four decades.

This scene was from a dvd called "swiss air force", its not a movie. It was a exercise wich got filmed very well and edited together. The german mig 29 is not used to fly in the swiss alps, the swiss pilots know the alps and its mountains much better, this gives them an advantage. Flying so close to the mountains is dangerous for both sides but the swiss having a big advantage on that. Also the exchange program with the US shows that the swiss pilots are very well skilled in the mountains. Sometimes US Pilots come over here for train in the alps and also swiss pilots go to an US aircraft carrier for practicing landing and starting.

Currently the german air force only is flying the Eurofighter Typhoon as a fighter plane. During the time, the JG73 used the mig 29 (after the reunion of west-germany and the former german democratic rebublic), the JG73 very often flew as the "agressor" in combat trainings against the us air force, the us navy and other nato air forces. The following comments were given during this time: Nicholas Mongillo (Top Gun): A German in a Mig29? This is our worst-case-scenario. In this case we fly against a threat, we hopefully never will have in real combat. Gary West (US Air Force in Aviano): With our F16 we grab the Mig29 only with iron nerves and a speed of minimum 325 knots. Below this speed it is extremely dangerous and you have to pay attention like hell not to be hit by a helmet-sight-shot. Tom Hahn (JG 73 German Air Force): The F/A-18 super Hornet ist quite similar in dogfight abilities to the Mig29. But the Hornet does not have the extreme thrust-to-weight-ratio like the Mig. Sometime the Hornet must go down with its nose and then you get it.

what we see here is some kind of a mix..a little bit of movie.. a little bit of documentation. what we see in the documentation is a training between a SWISS Air Force FA18 and a German MIG 29 Fulcrum ( have all been sold to Poland in the mean time for the price of 1 EURO per piece). The German Air Force does quite a bit of training here in Switzerland together with our boys.. and they doin' quite well..

"I'm locked, going inverted" I doubt that a fighter pilot talks on the radio like that if someone has a lock on him... Like a F1 driver talking to the pit telling them "curve ahead, I'm turning"
@winternow2242
@winternow2242 8 жыл бұрын
Actually I'd be surprised if they didn't talk that way. The results of ACM encounters - both simulated and real - are thoroughly inspected after the fact, and pilots know that what they've done (and why) will be closely examined; all that dialog is meant to inform as to what the pilot knew, what he was able to do and why he acted the way he had.
@jorgenbengtsson6945
@jorgenbengtsson6945 8 жыл бұрын
Changed my mind.... I KNOW rather than think that a fighter pilot would not talk like that/talk at al while having to make a split second decision regarding an evasive manouver. All data regarding the plane's instrument, sensors and weapon systems are surely logged and can be analysed in detail anyway.
@winternow2242
@winternow2242 8 жыл бұрын
Pilots also talk like that because they often work with a wingman, and all that chatter is used to coordinate the two planes.
@adger3307
@adger3307 8 жыл бұрын
If they use real chatters, nobody excepting GCI/AWACS Controller and air force pilot would understand what they are saying. example below would be usual 'fxck, hornet 1 Spike 6 O clock, defending'

@Slavik27 Yes, there is. However, AFAIK the pilot still needs to put range switch into the proper position before the launch. Maybe i'm wrong and this days it's done automatically. And yes, in mid-to-close range F-teens have no chance against R-73 coupled with head mounted targeting. That's exactly the reason why the modern US pilot tactics are based on BVR launch (primarily with AWACS assistance).

Facts: During the Gulf war, Iraqi MiG-25 shot down in aerial combat, F-18, MiG-25 tore several air raids American aviation. The MiG-29 in this war has shown itself to be the worst of the old Soviet MiG-25(the plane of the 60-ies when the MiG-29 was released in the 80's)but I think the fault of the Iraqi pilots who were poorly trained and do not really have time to learn the MiG-29.

Swiss Mil pilot right here. Why do you kids still cry and think the old 29 could win? The Hornet is probably the most maneuverable fighter at low speed and low altitude, and since the one represented in this vid is one of our Swiss Air Force, we use JHMCS (Helmet Mounted Tracking and Cueing System), AIM-9X Sidewinders and the AIM-120C7, the R-73 and R-60 from the 29 can't really compete. Actually at the time of the vid they weren't in use, but the electronics and systems of the F/A-18C and D are far superior to the ones of the MiG-29G (A). Plus, everyone of my colleagues knows that we Swiss are masters in flying in our mountains... Engaging a dogfight in the Swiss Alps is a suicidal and deathly idea for strangers that don't know them. Just do a small search on the net and you'll get everything i said confirmed. And oh, dear +louie k, first learn English and then go have discussions with others on KZbin... And trust me when i say you I'm more experienced in Mil planes than you. I've got the luck to play with my Hornet every day... But if you are a Serbian Military pilot we can talk again about this... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
@starcymondulio5155
@starcymondulio5155 8 жыл бұрын
Also, before attacking somebody (let me say you have a very bad command of the English language) you should collect infos first. It's clear you don't even know that all interventions in Yugoslavia were mandated by the UN (go and do a search on wikipedia) to the NATO with the intention to stop ethnic, sectarian and racial violences in that period of time. Difference of forces was not as great as you say, there were no more than 400 planes of which only 40% approximately were fighters so, well, it obvious. Yugoslavian pilots were bad trained and their planes in poor conditions. Plus no one died in air combat against NATO forces. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
@sparrowlt
@sparrowlt 8 жыл бұрын
you are correct.. while at more altitude the Fulcrum has slight advantage in turn rate and thrust to weight ratio.. at lower speeds and altitude the Hornet as advantage in turn ratio.. Still the point should be that both planes are so close to each other that the determining factor would be the pilot... and even the MIG has a HMS wich gave it advantage in close dogfights
@starcymondulio5155
@starcymondulio5155 8 жыл бұрын
sparrowJLT Hi and thanks for your reply. To be honest, I knew the 29 has an HMS only from this vid. I've had some occasions to enter the cockpit of German MiG-29G (A)s for pilot exchanges and it looked really old to me. As comparison, if you put a F-22/F-35 as a Chevy Corvette ZR1 the Hornet is a Chevy Camaro 1969 and the 29 a Ford Model T. ;) Still talking about the helmet mounted systems, the Hornet has an advantage because our JHMCSs have capability to lock-and-shoot a target while the nose of the plane looks in a direction, and the JHMCS in an other. That said, the HMS of 29 needs to have the nose on the target, so its influence is lower than the one of the Hornet. There is too, another determining factor that would make the Hornet win. Everybody agrees about indiscussed maneuvrability at low speeds of the F/A-18 series right? Let me say that in a dogfight you rarely pass 600Km/h, so take the conclusions by yourself... ;) Happy new year
@sparrowlt

Eros Mo It was a diferent philosophy.. MIG-29 and SU-27 shared the same cockpit with same controls so piltos could move between them easier... they really have more than it seems in that spartan.. the display scope showed radar, map and datalink .. and the HUD projected radar and datalink info.. you had radar targets and other targets shared by datalink from the AWACS or other planes in your HUD without having to look at the scope and could select them from the HUD.... (think that some 70s MIG-21s didnt even had a scope as the target information and radar contacts showed directly on the HUD wich acted like a display).. Also those older MIGs had a defense system wich showed from where the threat was coming from and even anounced IR missile launches.. something a western fighter wouldnt have until the 2000s Still that was the 80/90s cockpit.. today since 2000s they have been upgraded with color displays and have a much more modern panel while still retaining the HUD interface

The airspace over N. Vietnam was amongst if not THE most heavily defended in the world at the time. The fact that U.S. planes got through and hit their targets speaks volumes though loses were high with certain types of planes in particular which were vulnerable due to their being used outside their role but were thrown into the maelstrom if only because bombs could be slung to them (like the infamous Thunderchief fighter-bomber nicknamed the "Thud" for dubious and obvious reasons).

@timeflex There is a laser on also to measure the distance, it is not fully passive launch. But helmet mounted targeting system gives a huge advantage. In late 80s there was a simulation of the dogfight between german 29 and F-16, mig simply dominate because of that system. R73 was really superior missle by angles of the IR seeker and low restrictions for launch. Super hornet recently failed in India's tender. A lot of declared basic charachteristics wasn't proved by real tests.

Norht Vietnam airspace "was the most heavily defended in the world"? And what weapons were being used to defend it? Yes Sir, mainly Soviet made guns, SAMs and a few fighters: older generation MiG-19s and the most advanced MiG-21 (properly downgraded for export).Imagine U.S. losses in a war against the USSR or Russia

MIG-29 has poor range, avionics are good but they break down more quickly than US, European, Chinesse, and Indian avionics. The German Luftwaffe got rid of the MIG-29 and replaced them with Typhoon before the airframes reached their maximum hours of flight. The Swiss still have their F-18. some have had the center barrel repair to extend their airframe life.

@timeflex R73 for 80s was a great missle, but also not perfect. IR seeker is really weak against flares on a distance more than 3 km. In really close dogfight R60 was better, simply more agile. And of course, now R73 is outdated. New russian AA missles should be ready in 2 years, interesting to see the outcome.

I see in the comments that people are blaming the machines. That the outcome should should have been different because the other machine was better etc. Indeed the Mig-29 was the better machine having a better maneuverability, higher rate of climb, and longer range of weapons than the F-18. But let's not forget that the person behind the machine and the environment plays a huge factor the outcome of such battle. Maybe in this movie the Swiss Pilot flying the F-18 was a seasoned pilot and had more flying hours under his belt than the German pilot Flying the Mig-29, maybe he knew the advantages that the Mig-29 has over his machine and did a lot of practice to avoid getting into situations that will favor the Mig-29, maybe because parts are so scarce for the Mig-29 that the German pilot doesn't get enough flying hours hence lacked the experience of exploiting the Mig-29's advantages to his favor, the Mig-29 pilot wasn't able to use his exceptional long range missiles maybe because they were in the Alps and by simulation it would just hit the mountains since they were flying tight turns through the valley. Let's remember that experience and environment plays a vital part in an outcome of any battle.

@HornyDude83 primative doesn't mean worse. When German pilots and technichians studied the plane in the 90s they were suprised that the aircraft was technically outdated, yet it was comparbale to western jets at that time performance-wise. Russian Engineers designed an aerodynamically stable aircraft with great agility. The western engineers achieved this with jets that needed fly by wire systems.

Are you including the thousands of shot down U.S. helicopters, fighters and bombers that litter Vietnamese countryside, towns and jungles?

Well, roughly 30 years latter the skies over Baghdad were amongst the most heavily defended with AAA and SAM's but stealth tech and low flying cruise missiles made it nearly useless. Certain targets in Vietnam were virtually "impenetrable" until the first laser targeting came online. In WWII, 500+ bombers with tons of bombs to hit a target. In Vietnam, a squadron of planes and latter, one plane with a guided bomb to hit a target. Now, one plane, with stealth, multiple targets hit precisely.

Between F16 plane and MIG 29 leads to eternal struggle that comes to two of the same plane, where one has an additional engine and the other better electronics!? Range missile air-air medium-range (60 kilometers), but the problem is that the Russian side released T 50, which would have to replace MIG 29 and SU 27 (it should be the older models !?) or F16 will have to be measured with T50 or 35 F which can greatly replace F16 .....!?

Easily. against the missile maneuver there is a bell during the execution of this maneuver the aircraft becomes invisible to Doppler radar and heads with radar-guided missiles at the target

But to be honest. Only war can show what weapon is better (polnomashtabnaya of quantitative under equal conditions). I hope that we do not know. Modern weapons is a deterrent weapon!

On the US side just one that I can think of. Scott Speicher's F-18 during the first gulf war shot down by a Mig-25 Foxbat with the R-40 BVR missile.

sometimes the swiss airforce (F18) have airshows and invite other countries such as germany to participate. the germans them come with their MIG-29 to the airshow and before the show they use the oportunity to simulate dogfights. this is what happens here. pure and simple

Training had a lot more to do with US victories over Russian Aircraft than the equipment itself. How do you expect a well trained US Naval Pilot to do versus some random Libyan or Iraqi pilot with very little training?
