I’ve always found it interesting how ‘review bombing always seems to go one way. Otherwise it is called ‘fan acclaim’. A vast majority of folks weren’t upset at ‘gay couples’. They were mad about long-popular characters that were arbitrarily changed to ‘appeal to a modern audience’. A majority of folks wouldn’t have had an issue if the entertainment industry simply introduced new characters. The fact that the industry has repeatedly termed its critics as ‘-ists/-phobes’ only served to deepen the divide. That the name-calling is blatantly intended to silence criticism … isn’t lost on customers. Customers are simply at a point where an ever increasing portion simply have no patience for it anymore. That it’s been boringly predictable for years now, doesn’t help Hollywood, either.

I call the positive version "review booming," and it really is just as unhelpful as the negative variety. It encourages bad things to be made by unskilled people and therefore brings down the quality of things as a whole. Completely agreed about the pandering as well.

The amount of reviews for show like this that are all 10/10 without any kind of in depth reviews to back it up and is just "bEsTeST sHow EvErRrr" whoch stinks of POSITIvE revoew boming, and probably by paid shills no less. The negatove 1/10 revoews actually discuss scenes and characters they dont like and why and this proving they've at least scene what they are criticising etc.

I hate that this has become part of the entertainment playbook. Everything I despised about the first episode has nothing to do with being a fanboy or a bro, or feminism or LGBTQ+ content. I didn't like it because the CGI, writing, acting, and overall feel of the show was awful. When did it become not okay to dislike content of any kind? There is no room for context or conversation. Immediately you are labelled an enemy.

It’s ironic their acting is better off-screen since this is truly a reach the actors/writers are making about the audience. It is very bad and it’s not the audience’s fault; like they are trying to make it seem.

"I think Hollywood has lost its ability to do subtlety" Man, I couldn't agree more. In fact, this was exactly what I was thinking when in the last episode of "Fargo", Dot says that the trooper, because he had six sisters, might be the reason why he was so nice. I mean, seriously?! 😄 I stopped the first episode of "True Detective Night Country" somewhere in the middle because I couldn't stand the characters. It's the same reason why I stopped watching "Monarch" by episode four because the two young women are just insufferable. I don't understand why writers these days seem to prefer to create unlikeable characters.

As far as what we have for options right now, I liked Fargo s5. Just liked it. I loved the first 3 seasons and it is a show that I have frequently recommended. I feel like the last 2 seasons had all the good things from the 1st 3 seasons, but added in some wet dogsh1t here and there. I get the feeling that Noah Hawley still put together a solid story, but was forced to include a zoomer activist in the writer's room. Which would explain some of the preposterous dialogue for Lorraine Lyon (Jennifer Jason Leigh). All the other female characters have the same likeable qualities that the female characters had in the early seasons. And Lorraine's character had an interesting arc toward the end, but some of her lines were so godd@mn awkward. That one "Girl Boss" scene in the restaurant, where she orders for the men at the table, then delivers an embarrassing monologue about how she deals with guys who hate women, was so garbage. Dot's character was probably a little too OP, but overall, she was likeable. I don't mind the message of a woman who takes her lumps but refuses to complain about it. John Hamm crushed it, as expected. I'd give the 1st two seasons a 9-9.5 out of 10. Probably give season 3 a solid 8.5 and season 4 was probably about a 7. I'd give this season a 7.5, maybe an 8 if I'm being generous. It's better than all the other slop that is being churned out these days.

Comment at 12:10 is SPOT ON. I was literally writing a giant post about the reason so many of these shows sucking is because the industry is over run with activists. Not film makers, not game developers, not writers. I'm a right leaning libertarian (mainly due to guns/economics, socially left) and I've never minded when there was messaging I may disagree with as long as it was handled well. The classic example is Uhura's kiss in Plato's Stepchildren. If that had episode been made today, they would have spent at least 10 minutes of the show directly ramming it down the throats of the viewers how if you had even a slight negative reaction to the scene, it's because you were a subhuman piece of shit who should be excised from society. The creators simply put it there and let it sit. They didn't lecture, they didn't tell you how to think. They allowed it to percolate through people's brains so they could challenge their own beliefs and assumptions. What modern activist TV/Movie makers do is so counter productive to what they purport to want to achieve it's astonishing. All it does is make people buckle down, and die on their hill. I've been very worried about the potential for an (actual) far right backlash on this greater issue. You're already starting to see it on twitter, the turbo Christian conservatives (the types who frequently appear on Whatever podcast /barf) are getting just as absurd and ridiculous as the woke left. Anyways, rant over.

We’re just stuck a feedback loop where these studio productions seem intent on continuing to alienate the audiences. Get a poor or lukewarm reception, tell your audience they’re stupid or have bigoted intent, and then watch the reception get even worse. I just don’t know how much longer this can go on before almost everyone checks out on watching any of these productions. I mean, it’s one thing to make mediocre shows with political agendas, but when the discourse then becomes almost solely about the reception… what motivation does anyone have to even give it the time of day? I have to like it or it’s a moral failing? Screw that, there’s KZbin to watch. And it’s free.

Now reverse the genders...but you dont need to do that , she forced herself on him and got off on letting him know she is stronger and can hold him down. thats our hero?

In my opinion she is a master film-maker and that's how you convey a message and go against genre expectations of what a western is, in that movies case. The toxic masculinity theme is very well conveyed in that movie.

Putting agenda before your characters and story does make something preachy beyond belief. I think the preachy angle is a very accurate take and makes people just want to give up watching anything that starts being hectoring and moralistic(secular or religious). Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's film Never Look Away makes some good points on how art in Germany was directed by agendas of the far right in WW2 and the Soviet far left in Cold War East Germany. It all made for bad and banal art serving a propagandist purpose which bored everyone. Plus the Attack the Fans strategy seems to part of the studios PR program and I think they do it intentionally. When directors or showrunners say they want to make x and y groups uncomfortable or like Micheal Chabon from Picard Season 1 " I was trying to p*** off the fans on purpose" Or the star of She Hulk Tatiana Maslany saying her show was a "F you to some Marvel fans". Though there is some irony when the director decries review bombing but starts advocating review boosting to game the score in her direction. Though why the obsession with a RT score for any artist is quite baffling.

As usual Erik is really sensible in his analysis here. Many people these days want to immediately dismiss someone’s opinion of something because they use the word woke but it makes complete and total sense to me why they do. It’s a concise and to the point way of conveying that the show or movie in discussion is more about activism than telling a good story. Once you have identified that a story is woke you already know there are only so many ways the story can go and it makes everything incredibly predictable. This is what happened to Fargo season 5 and it sounds like it is probably what’s happening here as well. For the record I did kind of like this season of Fargo but it was predictable like I said.

It's always a good practice to give each season of a show a fair review that isn't judged primarily on the success or failures of past seasons, however, It's so hard for me to enjoy True Detective after what I consider a masterpiece of a first season. Great episode!

You can't avoid the comparison because although they are different stories, they are all sold on the name and success of "True Detective" season 1. And, as you said, the first season was a masterpiece, so of course people will and should expect the same quality, if not better. This show went from up to bottom in season 2 and never really recovered. They should've ended it with the last season, or not use "True Detective" as a "brand" name.

I'm saddened that the show runner has decided to react this way. I had a lot of the same issues/concerns with episode one that you did, but I was still interested in finding out what happened to the guys at the research facility. Now I'm even more concerned about the rest of the season. I hope I'm proven wrong and the rest of the season continues to improve, but her reaction just to the first episode doesn't bode well.

For what feels like multiple reasons that I cannot fully articulate. The intro music was cringe. The CGI is awful. There are a bunch of pointless scenes. Is this supernatural or sci fi now? Just no. I found the premiere pretty mediocre and I was rather bored at times. I knew it would never be as good as the first season of True Detective so I didn't go in expecting that. A lot of the supernatural aspects just came off as comical and goofy like the poorly rendered CGI animals or the ghost guy doing that weird dance. Acting was fine (Jodie Foster is the only one that really stands out) just the characters came off as either bland or unlikable. The music also felt out of place especially the theme song which sounds like it should be for a CW show like Pretty Little Liars or something. This season is only 6 episodes yet I felt there was already filler they could've cut out from just the first episode like the teenage stepdaughter sex tape subplot or the Navarro booty call scene which was so cringeworthy because if the genders were reversed the show would be getting called out for it. *Look at the Jaime/Cersei scene from GOT at Joffrey's funeral. That was a bad scene too. Season 1 was a masterpiece, Season 2 was extremely disappointing, Season 3 was a good comeback and Season 4 its too early to tell but just judging from the first episode I think it will probably just end up being mid. Maybe slightly better than Season 2.

Ever notice how the definitions of words and phrases gets muddied in use? "Review Bombing" is an actual tactic used against real artists. On the other hand, if you hear that phrase in contemporary parlance, it's often merely a way of saying "the audience doesn't like my show". In this case, the established audience and fans are simply expressing a distaste for the appropriation of an exceptional series by an activist producer with a hateful viewpoint.

It isn't a bad song it just didn't fit in my opinion. I wasn't expecting season one greatness. That would be damn near impossible! True detective season 1 was not apolitical. There were obvious ideas about policing, the role of "bad men", women as partners to men and how they are used, Christianity vs atheism/nihilism. This season was a complete fucking dumpster-fire. The finale was devoid of any logic, both with regard to the rest of the season and the detective-work, and as a stand alone episode, I have more questions than I have answers, and that is not due to its profundity or intrige, but just the plotholes bigger than a supermassive black hole. I feel like they just shovel shit and gaslight the public when they get called on it. It had potential: Alaska, eternal night and Jodie Foster. It had a lot going for it. But give it over to some mediocre showrunner and this utter shitshow is what we get. Even if she is an activist wanting to push an agenda, it could and should have been written better. Hilarious how poor reviews must be “bros” instead of any actual fault with the series (of which there are many - I don’t understand why this season was so acclaimed by “the critics” other then its gaze seems to fit what’s laudable in the current cultural zeitgeist). It’s hard to watch this show and not feel slapped by the clear disdain that López has for men in general, further evidenced that anyone who criticizes the show has no legitimate critique and must be a bro or someone who just expected a fourth season of TD to be… TD and not a different show under the same moniker

As with Fargo season 5, the trend continues of men are evil or weak no in between. A couple of examples I have picked up from TD NC episode 1: The african-american trooper wants revenge on the men who killed the girl in the case they never solved, because if she would have been there those men would be shaking in their boots. She also dominates her male fuck-friend in bed when he says: 'wait', because she is a tough woman who hates men and she shows her man friend that he is nothing but a fuck toy to her, get it? same as a 'macho' man would to a woman. Of course TD goes a step further in the cliche department because if the victim was a white woman the whole police force would be after the killer but because she is another race nobody bothered to investigate further, because racism and corruption. It does not bother me that the leads are two female detectives, however it does bother me when creators have to use stereotypes and cliches because they are not creative enough to efficiently convey their message via the use of subtelty and must use a hammer to bash in their message instead. Imasculated man trooper who is incapable of dating and orders a russian mail order bride, because we need some 'comic relief' as the story is bleak. True Detective season 1 was also about bad men performing unspeakble acts on women but the way the message was conveyed it had style, it was smart, it was compeling, Night Country is very direct and obvious. The only thing I loved about episode 1 was that Jodie Foster was in it and I had zero doubts that she would deliver a weak performance. She was a force back in the 90's and she is still a force now, it's just the material that is weak from un-imaginative creators who bluntly put cannot write fully fleshed out characters and we only get these cardboard cutout characters. A damn shame.... I also think that season 2 had a good premise but I think the reason it failed to live to expectations is because Nic Pizzolato, the creator of the original, wrote all 8 episodes of season 1 and Cary Fukunaga directed all of those 8 episodes. They made a great team and it was a shame they could not come to an agreement and perform the same miracle for season 2. Oh well, let's see what other tv shows and movies will swerve to the left-wing propaganda machine as the year has just begun.

This, and many other instances of this exact type of thing happening, are becoming more and more hilarious as we see the same people who are often found preaching about language being violence, turning to that sort of behavior and enacting violence on others by labelling them incels, misogynists etc etc. All these do as I say not as I do'ers are insufferable and dont have the self-awareness to realize they are being what they constantly harp about hating, or do they? I get the feeling from a lot of what ive seen they take the kill all men Andrea Dworkin approach to these sorts of things where they think if theyre doing it its okay, but if someone else does it, its violence or whatever. Example, yesterday I made a comment about this very subject on a movie review site and was almost instantaneously barraged by cries of misogyny/troll/etc and all the other well beaten modern era horses that have come to signify the playbook of current year feminism or whatever you wanna call it. My comment was not about the show but the preponderance of articles that have popped up seemingly overnight about the fabled "review bomb" and how all the incels were coming out to hate on a show lead by women. I made the argument (not having seen the show yet and making that very clear) that maybe the show isnt good and thats why its getting low reviews. Almost all I heard from the other commentors was the standard blowback accusations about hating women and how its all the fault of trolls, incels, misogynists and whatever other boogieMEN that are out there as to put a pin in the win column for the person using saying these things and poison the proverbial well of conversation in the process and stop said conversation with the equivalent what they thought was a digital mic drop. All this is to say, whenever a new show does bad, within a day or less of it airing this new cottage industry (which may or may not be fueled by pr firms, which I have no evidence of but I have a hunch about) you see a mountain of these articles going up decrying the online hate and calling out the "incels" and other assorted BAD GUYS so that everyone in the comments can rally around this new cause and come together to shutdown all the women haters. Its like fucking clockwork and has been happening for years and yet the majority of people never recognize it. Its so tiring to see the same fucking playbook rolled out every time some mega corporations new attempt at inclusion or whatever falls flat because its not handled with a deft hand and written well and just in general sucks and falls on its face, they gotta roll out the same tired articles crying about the same things and they almost never have any real evidence aside from a tweet and a feeling. Wow, how I would love a world in which we can have well written shows/movies/games/etc but our society no longer values the craft or the intellect required to create such things. We're surrounded by smooth brained distended bellied cast members of IDIOCRACY and a bunch of assholes who got high on their own farts who cant write themselves out of the proverbial wet paper bag. Im tired of being told I hate women because I have an opinion about a show that isnt praise when that something doesnt deserve it. Cheers.

The Ending was trash. I seen that same ending in multiple TV series on Netflix the last few years. When I first watched this it reminded me of a Norway TV Series Fortitude. But episode after episode the writer just seemed to make every male character an asshole no matter who he was. This was not writing of a series but a message to men and women watching this. So many not believable scenes that it was getting comical. The only real good part of this series was the Alaska background. It gave you a dreary and dark feeling to be scared. There were a few good scenes. But again this writer just destroyed a good backdrop, to produce a TV mini series like Fortitude. Never watching another series with this creator and writer/director. I do not want to see a political statement in my TV series unless it was a political. It reminded me of an award show that you are trying to enjoy and someone gives a 10 minute political rant.

They went the classic feminist activist route, every one of the male characters in the show is written as a caricature and acted as such.

So this is what it feels like to be a "normie" in a situation. I keep seeing ads for this and honestly it's not pulling me in. The ads are focused more on the detectives so i didn't know what's happening other than these characters.

Very nice video. In the first 2 episodes it seems like the show thinks men detectives act like this therefore women detectives have to act like this and it’s almost impossible to watch. Almost. My cringe meter maxed out a few times. Also is it me or is Jodie Forster not a good actress in this show. Her lines feel unnatural and her facial expressions are off as well. IMO. Maybe I’m just comparing it to Marty and Rust too much. Idk. Nice vid 👍

The romances in question, and forced representation is eye roll inducing at times, simply due to the sheer volume it exists with in modern media. But it doesn’t stop a great show from being great. Ultimately, that’s a task only poor writing/execution can do. So far this show is a 7/10 for me at best. But I’m hoping it will finish a little stronger.

Don't write a script based on a social agenda and ideology against men and expect them to have a favorable opinion of your show.

My wife and I just finished watching episode 2 and Wow! Doesn’t get much more woke than that. We looked at each other and asked, “This is why we’re keeping MAX”? Needless to say, we cancelled MAX. This show is going down the same road as woke Disney; they’re trying to overjoy 10% of viewers at the cost of 90% walking away. Good luck with that. I don’t care what anyone thinks, this show is just terrible. There are too many characters and back stories going on. The focus and pacing is off not to mention it’s very detached from reality. Now, I consider my wife to be a very progressive woman, she minored in women’s studies for heaven sakes, but she told me that female trooper is far too butch and one dimensional to be taken seriously. The acting alone from that character will sink this season.

I wonder if that 10% actually exists. One of the main characters is a rpist, the other is a drunk driver. The gay character owns CP, the scientists are all men. The woman detectives read clues because of their experience in housework. They are supposed to be strong, but they just perform toxic masculinity in female bodies. It's actually quite offensive if you think about it.

It’s a good season. I’m enjoying Idc about the clown director or the clown fans screaming like a bunch of women. It’s a fine show, just because it’s not s1 doesn’t mean you should act like an in cel clown man.

I remember Martin Freeman's interviews when promoting Black Panther. He made the point that the aim had to be making a GOOD film. It is no good setting out to make something IMPORTANT if it is crap and no-one goes to see it. Hollywood, please take note!

I’m interested in this season so far, personally. I only recently watched season 1. Loved it (I’m a woman lol) tried to watch season 2…couldn’t get past 3 episodes. It was horribly boring. Never tried to watch season 3 as a result. Then season 4 popped up and I tried it and was pleasantly surprised lol. But coming off the shit season 2 maybe I’m not being critical enough? Lol
