In this video, we show you the training process for introducing your dog to the DoggoRamps bed ramp for small dogs, with our step-by-step process for doing so.
Our subject today is Bumble the Pug, who within her first hour of being introduced to the DoggoRamp, was using it reliably to get up and down from the bed.
Step 1: lay ramp flat and let your dog get acquainted with the ramp, getting used to the feel, smell, etc.
Step 2: Set up ramp to a couch, and practice dog going up and down without the railings. Can skip this step if dog is very competent and likely to use ramp, or if bed is not very high. Otherwise, good idea to use couch as a middle step in working up to bed height so dogs get slowly used to increasing incline.
Step 3: Set up for a bed, and practice going up and down. May wish to try without railings first so dog doesn't feel claustrophobic. Use your body as the railing to keep them on the ramp. Once they're doing this well, introduce the railings.
Practice over and over until the routine is burned in their mind. Dogs are creatures of routine, and you need to teach the new routine. When dogs remember the ramp is there, and that the ramp is an EASIER way up and down, they WILL use it! And that's the goal!
