Brad, I was wondering if you could talk a bit more about breeding dogs for dog-aggression. In the video you didn't seem to take hard position on the issue despite your own preferences, I'm curious as to why that is?
@BradA18787 жыл бұрын
Johann Skilton - I'm not a dog fighter, and I'm not a fan of dog aggression. I don't see a point in breeding for dog aggression. With that said, there's a lot of breeders who try to breed to the historical "truth" of a breed, and if that's a breed that was traditionally dog aggressive (for whatever reason), then those breeders may feel it necessary to breed more true to the breed's history and therefore select for dog aggression. When I was first getting into dogs (especially rare breeds), I felt like I needed to worry about what other breeders were doing, and judge them for the decisions they made in their programs. Breeding for dog aggression, as an example, would have certainly been a thing I would not have agreed with. With time I've grown to worry less about what other breeders and owners are doing with their dogs, and worry more about what I am doing with my dogs. I always wonder about the motivation a breeder, and what value they add to their breed, if they spend most of their time talking about and judging other people and other breeders. Ya know? Anyway, nowadays, I generally take a "not my monkeys, not my circus" approach to dogdom. I focus on my own dogs and my own efforts and do those things to the best of my ability. I leave the "breed police" role, and the judging of others, to all the people in dogdom who feel the need to do that.

Nothing wrong with shooting a cougar or bear over hounds. It's a challenging way to hunt and there are areas where those animals need to be managed just the same as the deer and other ungulates are. Also, a lot of hunters enjoy the meat from those animals.

Powerfull, fearless, smart and loyal as fuck. If you are going after big cats, you want one of these to your side. In fact, dogos are not fighting-hunting dogs, but guard dogs. Yes, they can run and they can be very agressive, but the breed was made to protect their master in case the puma had a chance to get closer while the hunter was unarmed or loading his gun. Argentinian pumas also hunt always in small packs, so when dogs went after a puma hunters were vulnerable. They made the dogo to prevent this, and engage only in a small range. That's why they are also easy going and smart, ideal for even small houses. They are not particulary territorial, but very very overprotective with their owners. They are higly social dogs also, fights and incidentes are not really a common thing (though considering this is probably the most formidable warrior among dogs, every owner should always take precausions. In the few cases when dogos go badass mode they are really brutal). Also, yeah, they can take down a mountain lion one on one, that's how powerfull they are. In fact, dogo's ancestries were the dogs that survived fighting pumas on the pits, if they didn't kill the puma they died, thus their genes died with them.

I have to use a pellet gun even though he can't hear well in one ear, loud noises, aerosol cans, and camp fires terrify him and haunt his dreams. But he will take on 5 male dogs and make them all regret jumping in on the maylay against my lil white boy. The 3 that survived did and their owners came at me with the vet bill. My dogo didn't jump on 5 dogs, 5 dogs jumped on my dogo. I left it at that. I was at work when it happened or there wouldn't have been any survivors.

Do people down in South America really use Dogo's for cougar hunting? It seems well-suited for catch-dog duty when hog hunting. Cougar hunting requires a very good scenting ability and extremely good endurance; the only dogs that get used to hunt cougar in North America are the scent hounds (plott, walker, bluetick, redbone, ect). I know there was that famous story of a dogo protecting a child from a cougar attack. I wonder if the dogo's cougar hunting prowess spawned from that incident, because I just can't see these dogs tracking cougars over a dozen or more miles in the deep snow of Montana or Idaho.

Question for Brad: I know you have an affinity to dogs that were used for fighting even though that is not something you condone at all and would never imagine subjecting a dog to be used for that purpose. You talk about wanting to see if they hype behind these breeds is what the owners say. In your experience since you have owned so many of these dogs, which breed do you believe would really be the “top dog” for fighting other dogs and which do you believe is the number one for stopping a man (I do believe this could be 2 different breeds). Just curious to your opinion since you don’t seem biased by any breed. I am against dog fighting too with every fiber of my being, but I have the curiosity just like so many others do. I figured you would be the guy to ask. Thanks.
