I'm getting boots for my girls right now. In the summer my oldest girl got her feet torn to shreds whilst walking on the beach...the barnacles on the shells tore her up. On the hot pavement she got blistered and I never realized until she started limping. Several winters ago my pompoo had one of her paws get stuck to the pavement in the winter. So it's worth the pain in the butt to teach them how to walk in them and keep their little tootsies protected. These furbabies are my children and my responsibility. I'd be a cruel owner if I ignored their safety. And, as their mother, their safety is my highest priority.

Everyone, this is not animal cruelty! The boots are needed for medical reasons. In the winter, we put salt on the roads to make the ice and snow melt. When the dogs walk on the pavement barefoot, the salt gets on their paws. That causes frostbite. Also, they will lick their paws, which will cause them to get sick from the salt. In the summertime, the boots protect their paws from hot pavement. The boots aren't hurting them, they just aren't used to them yet. After they walk in them a few times, they'll start to walk normally. Ps. They owners are letting them get used to the boots while walking inside, it's safer that way.

My dog hated her boots at first of course and YES she looked hilarious walking in them.. But it's below zero here in chicago and she can't/ won't go out without them. The ice and salt hurt her. It's not cruel.

Absolutely....... They enjoy walking in shoes. They feel comfortable, esp when it's hot outside. M sure all of us(when babies)must have felt uncomfortable when our parents put on shoes on our feet for the 1st time

For all you saying this is cruel, it isn't. My dogs pads on his feet are sensitive and he usually welts up when he's walking on grass, and ever since he's been wearing his boots, no matter how uncomfortable, it's keeping him more safe than before.

In the winter my mom puts booties on our dog because otherwise my dog will get chunks of ice in her paws. Though booties may be uncomfortable at first my dog gets used to them pretty quick and it's better than getting ice in her paws

A necessary outer wear for dogs in my neck of the woods. People salt their sidewalks to melt the snow and ice and the salt application can frost burn a poor dogs paws in no time flat.

You all are ridiculous who think this hurts them. Yes it confuses them, but it is NOT animal abuse. There are people who use these to help their pets. Are you aware it's not good to walk your dog on a hot day without those boots? Your dog can have blistered pads without them. Yes, they are amusing, and confusing for them, but if worn enough the animal eventually gets used to them, regaining their footing, and can function properly in them. They just aren't used to it. I'm a die hard animal lover and would be out for blood if I saw REAL animal abuse. This is harmless fun, and your animal may even appreciate down the road that you care enough about their pads to use them.

for all the people who think this is abuse, believe me that it's sometimes necessary for dogs to wear the shoes during the winter so their paws don't get irritaded by the salt we use for the streets. I got two dogs and it looked pretty much the same the first time we put them on ;)

My dog hikes in ruffwear dog boots (all the other brands are insanely cheap quality) - no problems here. Best part is that they protect her pads from scree and other rock that can get as hot as 40 Celsius some days.

To whoever is crying about how mean it is to let the dogs wear shoes and that "they dont need them": Dogs are not used to, and also not supposed to walk on salted walkways and streets because not only does it dry out their feet, it can be realy painful for the dog if he has an open wound, which happens alot and is just normal. So if youre a good dog owner, let him wear shoes during winter time.

As much as people say it's cruel, it does have it's purpose, and there are dogs who will get used to it and some even become dependent on thinking they need it when they go out of their house... It's the same logic as why people leave their shoes outside and they have flip flops or sandals or whatever specifically for indoors.

Obviously some of you have never looked at a dogs pads after summer heated up asphalt or watched an animal die from poison in salt for ice after licking their feet...or sub zero temps and long periods on frozen ice or snow. Anything that helps our 4 legged friends is a plus if they are exposed to excessive conditions. AND no I am not an animal rights fanatic...I am rancher!!

Sometimes Dog boots are necessary. During winter the salt can irritate their paws. If your going though a park or something boys can come in handy too, dogs can get cut on ask sorts of things.

No, my dog doesn't wear a collar, when we first got him he did and he didn't like it, he sat and scratched at his neck for ages a night. I drive so whenever we take him for a walk, he's transported in the car. We have one on hand just in case, but we rarely use it. Why? :)

They might get used to cold temperatures, but these "boots" are a very good protection for the salt that is put on the roads during winter, that can irritate their pads very badly. Of course you can choose to rather rinse of their paws and put soothing paste on the pads instead after every walk. Also, I'm sure the dogs are wearing the boots inside just so they get used to them. I do not approve though if the boots are worn for "fashion" reasons, only for protection

Well since salt on the pads causes chemical not physical iritattion I still beleive dogs need protection for it but ok, perhaps if they spend most of their time outside they could get a bit more resistant to it, though I'm still a bit doubtfull.

I put them on my dog as he wears his pads down a lot when hiking. Also when its really bloody cold in Canadian winters. Its' not cruel. People who do it as costume, different story. I also put a coat on my dog to avoid mosquitos and again, for the cold.

I understand what you are saying, I guess some dogs are more sensitive than others, what I've said came from my personal experience, which is the more you let the dog run outside without any protection, it's pads will become more "damage" resistant. All of my dogs run like that and their pads feel like a bottom of a rubber shoe :)) It's a similar effect that martial arts practitioners get when they stick their hands into that hot sand :)

Could be, however I also look at those street dogs and they have absolutely no protection, and you can rarely see any damage on their paws as well, that made me think that they do become resistant if they just live like that......any artificial protection like doggy clothes and boots is ok, but one should bare in mind that it will make their bodies less resistant, so it shouldn't be excessive

Because of the shoes, they can't feel where they are keeping their feet. That's why they are keeping their legs wide apart to keep from falling. Imagine going down on your fours wearing stilts on your hands and feets. Try walking like that and then dare to laugh!
