Giving a dog to the humane society isn't abandoning them. It's putting them in a safe place when you've realized taking responsibility for an animal is more than you thought it was or circumstances prevailed and can no longer care for a dog. Leaving a dog alongside a highway is abandonment. Taking an animal to an animal shelter is responsible.
