Chow chows were my childhood dogs, we had two and they were great indoor-outdoor family dogs. The were raised from puppyhood with me as a baby so they were fine with kids. Dad originally got one then brought home a second rescue from our groomer who was the same age, it worked ot since they were mostly outdoor dogs but yes we werent as connected with them as with the one i got in highschool.

* * * * * star review! At 60 years old, I'm never done training or learning. There's always something new to do, and it's FUN! My old buddy Echo just learned to push a talking button, and he was SO proud of himself! Yesterday, I was working on serps, threadles and contacts with my 4 year old Sheltie. And you are SO right that folks should not get impulse pets and litter mates. It's very helpful to let our older dogs help train a new pup rather than having two out of control pups playing tug with your sofa cushions! A fenced yard isn't always a good thing. Rather than invest the time to make their new dog a great companion, some people leave the dog outside to amuse itself by barking and destroying the yard. I worked with one friend's terrier that had ripped all the vinyl siding off the house. I showed him your websites, and how to spend quality time teaching her to use enriching toys - she turned out to be AWESOME!

As a long time labrador retriever breeder and trainer (using methods I learned from Bob & Marian) I was very eager to hear what you have to say about getting a new puppy. I don’t disagree with what you’ve said, but I have different methods based on my 25 year experience placing my puppies with novices. For example, I keep my litters intact for 12-14 weeks (based on research done by Scott & Fuller) so that puppies have time to learn naturally from their litter mates & canine mother. I also begin their training so that novices don’t have to start from scratch. I respect what you do & your approach, and I use as much of what you have done to train my own dogs and to train the people who get my dogs.

This is the information I wish I knew when I got my puppy, who's now 3 years old. Our older rescue dog before him was very well-behaved, and made us think dog ownership was so easy. Wow did that puppy correct that thinking - and eventually led me to Susan's training programs. I've learned to forget everything we did wrong when bringing that puppy into our home, and work with the dog in front of me - just like you'd do with a rescue that you don't have the history for. I would definitely share this episode (and the whole podcast) with anyone planning to get a new dog, or struggling with the dog they have.

I have two border collie/staffordshire terriers. They were born in my house and they were litter mates. Already I have violated two of your recommendations. I kept them because I had anticipated going into retirement and I wanted to find something that would help to keep me young and active.I’ve made all the mistakes new dog owners could make. I began training them much too late. I’m learning my training through KZbin in bits and pieces. I am still way too inconsistent AND I was unable to retire (working 12 hours per day). OF course they have all the “bad” habits.I have learned from and “rejected” many possibly competent trainers because I didn’t like their style of training. Presently my favorite is Nate Schoemer. I believe home to be a solid trainer/instructor for me…..until I came upon your podcasts only days ago.Your style intrigued me. I am presently devouring your podcasts in an effort to understand your mindset and methods to see if they can be incorporated into what I understand. I may need some help.

oh yes. again this podcast , like your others is full of valuable information. I am one who considers myself blessed with all the dogs (and cats) i have had in the past and the four i have currently. I did an impulse buy of a cocker spaniel who was the only pup left in the pet store. YES, the pet store. I didn't want her to live a day longer stuck in a glass box as an ornament you place on your mantel. SO, i bought her. She was a doll and I did the training and unfortunately she had heart issues and cancer. I had no idea about puppy mills back in the early 80s but i know darn well she was one. Thank you for putting it out there about RECALLERS. I took the course a few years ago and loved it. Now involved with Homeschooling and Wag Nation. There's so much out there for people to see and learn from. Can you do a podcast on proper engagement toys. NO STICKS I want people to know that playing with sticks not only is fun for your dog, but it is terribly dangerous. My 5 yr old border at the time was always finding sticks and this one day, he was so happy he found one he began running around like he won the lotto, that he tripped and the stick was jammed to the back of his throat. The stick came out, or so i thought. Hours later I see him drooling and light pink colored blood mixed in. We opened his mouth and I took a picture, called my vet, sent the pic and off we went to meet the vet. All went great, as I pulled up to the parking lot, the techs were there to carry him in, he was treated and to this day i cannot trust him around sticks. and they are everywhere. Think about it, and I do hope you do a podcast on proper toys or safe ones to engage with your dog. thanks again

2 min into this one and I love it. I have a mobility issue that is a problem in exercising. I am planning on fencing in most of my half acre to allow more space and setting up more exercise items for dogs. I know I need to be out there with them.

Just came to the part about going outside with puppy on leash. I'm in the transition from me taking 8mo Sapphire out every day to go to the bathroom and yes, I check her poo even now that she is not on leash all the time. Now we have a fenced backyard and I still go out with her most of the time or watch her from the windows. It is a hard transition since we have spent 6mo bonding early in the morning. I did use your crate methods for puppy sleeping at night. It worked most of the time but more importantly gave me a foundation because we didn't do this with our last BC puppy. Thanks again for helping us "see" how we can be the best trainer possible to help our dogs be the best!

Hahaha! I love these videos... "but, I've budgeted 20 minutes a day to feed and walk the dog!" This is why, while for years I've been researching the optimal breed for my next dog, I only made the decision to follow through when I'd made the decision to protire (that's, left a good job in exchange for a better quality of life). I truly appreciate the videos, and I'm looking into the online course.

Thank you, Susan! I was intending to add a new puppy to my home (currently just myself and my 2 year old GSP) but now have some thinking to do about whether or not I should wait a bit longer (thinking of your comment about preferring 3 years between your dogs) 🙏😊

From this episode you recommend feeding raw. What do you feed your dogs? I am a vegetarian and completely clueless. I have had lots of recommendation for raw but truly have no idea where to start.

Alrighty, I guess I hit the replay button directly! My dogs do need clothes though. I like to cover them in pomppa, especially after traing in winter or when they have to stay in the car waiting their turn.

Also be honest with yourself! My husband made a lot of empty promises to convince me to let him get a German Shorthaired Pointer. We waited 2 years for the right one but after 2 months everything was left to me! I didn't have the time because she wasn't meant to be my dog! I felt bad for her but at least she had my dog to keep her company during the day.🙄

Loving these podcasts am going through them like water. Back before I had kids, I had German shepherds and they were well trained I could take them anywhere and as the kids were growing up we had rescue dogs, so I was fairly confident about having dogs again. But boy there is so much to learn and to relearn! It is a bit scary but so much fun and the more you learn about animals the more interesting they become. I trained my first animal, my budgie when I was 10 years old. I loved her so much. I did have to ask myself, why we love some animals and yet slaughter and eat others who are just as cute, intelligent and sentient as dogs. So I am vegan but I feed my animals raw and it is hard to reconcile that at times - I try and source naturally culled wildlife rather than farmed animals where I can, but they are still other animals. I have heard of dogs on a vegan diet but that includes the use of vegan kibble and I don’t agree with dried processed food for them either, and cats are obligate carnivores anyway. Be good when they start growing meat in petrified dishes.

Great advice, other than she goes back to the myth of not having littermates. While some do get littermates to "keep each other company", some of us don't think of it that way and know what it requires... lots and lots of separate time, etc. And yes, you should research. But going through a rescue? How does one know what they are getting, anymore than a "back yard breeder". The dog was surrendered for a reason, and there will be baggage way bigger than many are ready to handle.

It's fantastic that you are one of the well-prepared people who knows that it takes extra work to have littermates! They can be great. But it's not a myth that it takes extra knowledge and effort to raise them well - as you said. I've seen hundreds of clients where it worked out very badly.
