This Podcast was recommended at the exact right time for me today. Last night at agility class with my 6 year old Zuko, my instructor asked us to repeat a small sequence a few times. He didn't do it wrong per say - it just needed a bit of improving. On our 3rd attempt he refused to even attempt the jump and then disconnected. I tried a few games to get him to re-connect then tried again. He then left me and then hopped on the dog walk - ran across and stopped at the bottom - which was right near the gate to exit the ring. I had actually stopped bringing him to agility a few months ago as I was "giving up on him" as far as agility that is. But after a few weeks of Home school the dog I am encouraged to ensure that we have clarity and confidence. I now understand that he is not being difficult or stubborn - I just have to figure out how to make training these skills more like a game.

Love this! My dog use to have hiding places…she would just go hide, and I never knew why. So I gated off some escape areas and learned that when I praised the heck of each little thing she did right, the more she stayed. ❤She didn’t know what to do, so she went to her secret places😂. She doesn’t hide now, which is wonderful. Much more engaged and content.

love that you wrote this. Thank you for sharing! I have a seven month old puppy who will run and hide out of the blue when we are playing tug or I am training him. He is a softy and I have been very careful to grow his confidence - have never growled at him or anything like that! So I was surprised and a bit hurt inside when he ran under the table away from training. He doesn't like treats much either. He also responds to praise and strokes, but he is not a clingy dog either. He is the complete opposite to my adult dog lol. They are both generally very happy and I love them, but I have never encountered this hiding behaviour before!

When I got my current Sheltie Cooper I had great expectations. He has been a steep learning curve for me. He is completely different from any other Sheltie I have owned. I have had to look for new ways of training which lead me to Susan Garrett and Recallers. We now have positive training experiences and I know I’m now training the dog in front of me. Thanks Susan for another great podcast. Whenever I get frustrated now when training I know I can find a gem of wisdom from you that puts me back in a positive place. ❤️

Thanks for sharing! Great info. I could be wrong but my dog is very similar to "This", Susan's puppy. Now I could do nail grooming, teeth cleaning, walking with less frustration (from my side) and so on. Really appreciated.

We had such a bad basic 2 class yesterday. I was so annoyed at Fynn and was in such a bad mood on my drive home. But I thought to myself what have I not done that Susan has said . Then I realized I had failed Fynn and not the other way around. And then today this episode popped up. You are JUST awesome. thank you🙏

This podcast could not have come at a better time for me. This just happened to me 3 days ago! As my frustration was growing, I stopped my training and played an easy game before ending our session. The bad news is that I watched my training video only the next morning! Watching it right away would have save me a lot of hours of anguish :) I came up with a plan after watching it and our next session was way better. Train the dog in front of you! Thank you Susan. PS: notes have been taken :)

As a 5-year Recaller, and a Homeschooler, there is no doubt that Dogs That has become a big part of my life. Adding these twice weekly podcast has been so valuable (and entertaining!) that my husband reminds me to watch them every Wednesday and Friday, and joins me! Often, they remind me of concepts I may have let slide to the back burner, and often, Susan offers new ideas that I can't wait to implement. Thank you Susan Garrett!❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️

Love this one. I have two very different dogs so I have to train them both a bit differently. One works through failure much better, he's older and loves work. The other is still learn that there is value in work. Making the correct choice super easy has changed how I think about training, particularly with the younger one..thank you Susan.

We're in our 5th month of Recallers & I've learned if something doesn't go as planned it's not my dog, it's me. I put him in the wrong environment or asked for too much at this stage. Watching this podcast reminded me to check both my T.E.M.P. & P.E.P. as well as his ! Watching you & This! always makes me smile :)

Thank you THANK YOU for all that you’re doing. I’ve been obsessed with your podcast for the last several months, and my Mama just bought me Homeschool the Dog as I’m getting a new puppy tomorrow! I had to come over to KZbin from Spotify because the outro to this episode made me laugh out loud alone in my car. 🤣 I actually pass a tattoo parlor on my commute every single day, so don’t tempt me! Love you, love what you do, keep on going! -Dan

Haha. I was there like so many others. I had worked with my guy to do figures of eight around cones. I hadn't done it for awhile so on an off-leash in the woods, I spontaneously asked for just a right around a tree stump and then a left. He did it perfectly. I made the mistake of asking for it, again. He was stumped (pardon the pun). and so was I. Thanks, Susan, for wonderful and informative podcasts. P.S. Love the cameo of Swagger (I think that was him). Such a clown.

It’s so sad that people can abandon a companion. Not only are they left to starve with no shelter and get bug infested and diseases, but they also will now have a broken heart because they are wondering why their owner who they loved just left them alone and isn’t coming back.. yes animals can be frustrating at times but so are people. Doesn’t mean leave them to die and be broken hearted.

Thank you for putting these amazing videos together for us 💖 I have a question about journaling. How do you journal successfully? I have tried many times and I always end up with a messy notebook where I can't find anything and it is not helping my training. Thank you!

Thanks for all your great podcasts / videos ❤️🤗 I have a question 🤔 In this episode you are saying "train your dog in front of you". Somewhere else I was told that in order to teach my dog to walk by my leg, it is a bad idea to teach the dog that being in front of me is good?? I hope, that you understand my question ❤️
@chrismccollough5453 жыл бұрын
Hi Majbritt. I think you may be having a problem with the preposition. She doesn't mean to train the dog to be in front of you i"Teach the dog in front of you". She means to train the dog you are training. Do not think that just because something worked for a different dog it will work for this one. See the dog, it's personality and take it from where the dog is. Not where people are saying it should be. Every dog/person is different. Even my turtles have different personalities. I hope this helps. Take care.
