My last puppy was a Basset Hound 15 years ago. He free-fed because I was trying to train him that food was always available, and he didn’t need to wolf it down or get all anxious about more food. It did work! Even for a propensity for obesity breed like a basset, he hovered around 50-55lbs his whole life. We always got compliments on how healthy he was. HOWEVER, he did always have trouble going in the house his entire life, and we didn’t have that locked on training relationship all dog owners crave. I always chalked up to being a hound. After seeing this I can see the relationship between those behaviors and the free feeding. We are getting a new Golden Retriever puppy in a month and we will NOT be free-feeding the Golden. Thanks for all the help.

I had 2 English Cockers 53!b and 45lbs they were big and strong never picky eaters. Now I have an American Cocker much smaller at 21 lbs his highest and he is the pickiest eater ever!! I feed 2 x a day 5:30am and 5:30pm but lately he just doesn’t eat. I’ve left dry food out the past few weeks but don’t leave fresh or wet food out. I’am trying now not to leave food out. But worried because he won’t eat. To do point I hand feed him😩 to make sure he is getting some nutrients. Taking him to get checked out this week. Thank you for your great advice.

Yay! For once I’m actually doing something right 😀. I divide my dogs food between training, scatter feeding and food toys. I rarely need to use actual treats, because her normal food has value. I had recently been wondering if I was being mean not letting her have free choice feeding, so thanks for another really helpful and informative video 🙏 🐾

Thanks, Susan! What you say is SO TRUE about building relationships with your dog(s) at meal time. (True for humans, too, tho in a different way.) At our house, mealtime comes with "mini-trainings" & a sense of ritual. My husband has often mused, "I'm not sure which they like better: the food or the build up to the food." 🤣

. We recently switched our GSD over to home cooked meals. He was a picky eater before (preferring to guard it instead). I think something in the food was making him sick. I agree with all of the behavioral aspects of this video , but I think there needs to be a part 2 about signs that the food itself is not right . GSD would eventually eat but he felt like crap and was grumpy because of it. He would skip meals to the point where I believed he didn’t want to eat every day. Now he just eats twice a day without all of the drama. He didn’t like to be touched, yet now he is 100x more affectionate. I think at some point the dog has to be trusted. He knows something isn’t right with the numerous types of kibble we tried ❤. Thank you for all you do!

First of all, thank you Susan and team for putting these videos out for free! We love and appreciate them ❤ Second, I have an issue. I've never been a free feeder and my dog used to be a pretty good eater. However, as he ages I've noticed he wants to eat less and less things. Most recently he is turning his nose away from ground meat (forgot to mention he eats raw) he only wants to eat pieces. That is an issue because I used to mix his supplements in the ground meat. Does Susan have any suggestions?

The second I got my 8 wk GS, I hand fed and started training immediately..now at 17 weeks, he knows place, sit, down, stay, almost stay when I leave the room we are working on that, touch, shake, bring (fetch), now he brings his little squirrel and while dropping it in my hand he also offers a shake..little confusion there but I’ll take it..he’s a terrible puller on the leash, he just got a bruised throat my fault after trying Beckman’s 180 degree turns on walks to reduce pulling, so, watch out for that.

Oh yeah..wait or stay command, or wait to exit the crate or door, he will sit and down before I release with the break command..it’s not super convenient to always have to train at meal times, but..put in the work to invest in the future!

My biggest issue with my chow-husky rescue is that she is such a picky eater she refuses food. It helped me to put her on a 1-2x a day food schedule which is recommended for her larger breed type. But trying to find treats she likes to train her is difficult. Tried SO many recommendations for the breed types. And so far she will only eat her wet food meal 1-2x a day if that. Found ONE treat she likes which is homemade dehydrated salmon but I can't afford to give that too often. Especially not 50-75% of her meals by hand.

We have never been free feeders and have always fed 2 meals a day. One of our dogs (8yo male mini poodle) has never met a protein he didn't like while our other dog (14yo female miniature schnauzer cross) has ALWAYS BEEN a picky eater. About 12 months ago we changed to raw feeding after doing a lot of research and talking to other dog owners. I have not found a way to incorporate raw fed meals into training (apart from getting a good sit and wait before they are released to eat). Do you have any suggestions?

Would love to know exactly with what kind of food do you feed your dog? I saw on the video sardines, I do give her once a week 2 fillets but in olive oil not in spring water is it OK? And what is the white powder ? Do you always add greens in their bowl cause I do most of the time. Just what to make sure that I give her the very best. Acana Classic for meals, Canisource for everyday training and raw meat for agility. Is raw chicken ok from Bigcountryraw ? Thank you and looking forward to start in HSTD ! 😉

Lol... But i also give her food in the bowl and i have always picked up the bowl - but a couple days with the new pupnot eating enough i did the bad thing - i left the food hoping she would eat.but nope - she did not.. But after removing it she actually ate more... Lol.. The HipD. research really scared me .. :/ i use metal bowls - and put it in the fridge if not eaten.. but if not eaten trough the day it will be thrown to the foxes.... they need food too.. Lol..

Feeding a mixture of raw and kibble (vet recommended that!) was the start of my pups picky ness at first but what turned out to be digestive issues. I am listening to ‘the forever dog’ and I’ll never feed kibble again!

@@rosieleat6868 Our problem was that she did only eat the kibble :( She did not want the raw food.. If that was a grown dog i would have put the food down - let her eat or not and then removed it again for a new chance for hear next day.. But to starve a puppy at the age of 12 weeks is out of the question for me. I stll feed her raw..but now and then she wants kibble.. I give high quality kibble 80-20 diet..AATU.. because when she gets her fuzzy moments she can go without food for days .. I can give her eggs, steak, bones.. but NOPE.. she wants kibble. I have had dogs since 1989 and this dog is a strange one.. She is a Dutchie and they are very odd dogs...Main thing . she is very healthy, happy and overall a great dog.. I am getting a malinois soon and i hope that will help her appreaciate her food more.. A little competition will not hurt-.. Maybe we can get her 100% on raw then like all my other dogs.

Hi, Susan, this is great. I have had fussy dogs in the past but my present dog is a nightmare. She is a Boston Terrier/Chinese Crested with a splash of poodle, who are notorious fussy eaters. But there’s not a lot of poodle in her, only 19%. I have tried the 20 min rule, I have left it till the next meal and even 24hrs before feeding again. She had training treats in between so not totally starved. She has been like this since I rehomed her at 12 weeks, currently 15 months. I have changed her food, which she will love for a week and then go off it. So we’re on Royal Canin and a mixer of Nature Diet. This worked for a while but she does that covering like she’s trying she’s trying to hide it for later. Also she will take it out of the bowl and spread it round the floor and leave it. 😟 So my question would be, should I go back to just the kibble alone and do the 1 spoon at a time. Any advice you can give me would be very helpful as I’m pulling my hair out with her. She had a recent vet check and their happy with her.

Susan, I would have liked to hear you say that when you feed your dog and it doesn’t eat it, not only could that dog not be feeling well, take a look in their mouth. Teeth problems, gum problems etc. Or even something stuck in their teeth. I was one of those free feeders back in the 1990’s and although none of my Malamutes gained weight that wasn’t supposed to be on them, I changed it up as I didn’t want them to be grazing. I had 3 Malamutes in a townhouse and no one knew how many I had. Lots of walks, hikes, training, and they were tired, mentally and physically tired and they slept while I groomed them, cleaned house etc. And to top that off I had 2 cats in the townhouse. We did eventually move to acreage and now I have the Borders, McNab and rescue. I feed half their meal for breakfast and keep the other half for training throughout the day. I do the same at night. I do feed in Kongs and lick mats frozen as it calms them at the beginning of getting to know my new dogs when I bring them in. I get into my routine and the dogs follow suite. I know you mentioned dogs who are prone to bloat and that can be a problem when feeding, but what also is important is when the dogs get older they have or could have difficulty bending their necks to get the food. Personally, as my dogs age, and they are on the larger size ( I’ve had Great Danes, and a Wolfhound before) I did not feed them from the floor. Just my observation here. Not to nit pick your video. Again, thanks for the informative video and knowledge. We all know that your videos are done from what you as a professional have knowledge on. I am a Recaller past student also still with Home School. Love your stuff and thank you once again.
