On his journey to Paris, D’ARTACAN is insulted by a man with a black moustache, who then gallops off. They meet again at the hotel where D’ARTACAN stays the night and start to fight a duel, but the man breaks off to talk to the beautiful MILADY, leaving D’ARTACAN to be beaten up by his servant and the hotel-keeper. The man, subsequently, returns to rob D’ARTACAN of his letter of introduction.
