Through this video, you will know how to introduce a new puppy into your home, and also with your family. When bringing a new puppy home for the first time, people make the worst mistake by letting the puppy freely run all around the house. But this is not the right way to introduce a new puppy into your home. As we go to someone's house, do you run and check what's there in every room? No, you know that you have to behave. But why you are not thinking the same when a new puppy comes to your house.
By you letting him freely run all inside the house, you are allowing him to disrespect your space. If that new puppy would have gone into an area where dogs are naturally living, those dogs would smell the puppy first, and then don't let him go anywhere. By doing this they are asking the new puppy to respect the place, and behave.
Now how will you use this technique? Firstly let's talk about introducing a new puppy into your home: As the new puppy comes in, ask every family member to ignore the dog (which means no touching, no talking, and no eye contact with the new puppy) and sit calmly. Once the puppy won't get any response from the family members, he might try climbing on the sofa, bed, or try to explore every corner of the house. Here is the point where you have to do what other dogs might have done.
Teach discipline to the puppy by doing two things:
1. Create a Rule that a puppy cannot climb furniture
2. Establish boundaries that puppy cannot enter the kitchen
After 5-6 minutes of a new puppy at your home, take the puppy to the spot where he is going to pee or poop. Dogs don’t make their living place dirty in nature, but you have to show them the place which they can make dirty. So, stay there for some time, if the puppy does his business then it’s good, otherwise, come back home.
Once the puppy is again inside the house, take him directly to his crate/bed, which we have set up previously. This is the only piece of furniture where a puppy can go for 2-3 days. Luckily if the puppy slept quietly, this means you have introduced a new puppy into your home properly.
After having a proper introduction with the home, now let's know how to introduce a new puppy to your family.
As the puppy is sleeping quietly inside his crate, now is the time when every member of the family is allowed to meet the puppy. But wait, firstly let’s understand that why till now you are not allowed to do so. This is again the common mistake which a lot of owners make, especially small children and girls. What they do is that as the puppy gets in they just run to the puppy, pick him up, play with his ears, shed their kisses to him, let the puppy sit on top of them, let him lick them, and does all kind of cute stuff.
But what a puppy understands by you this behavior is that I can go to their private space as they are doing so. And as it’s your puppy, you can enjoy that, but when he gets old, and if small children are around, that could be harmful. Especially if you own a german shepherd or rottweiler-like breed. And is this is how you want to introduce him to the family.
